Abstract

Described herein is a technique for cashing a check at an automated banking machine. A check is presented via a check acceptor which obtains check data from the check, the check data comprises an amount. If the amount of the check is greater than a predetermined threshold, or limit, the user is asked to provide additional identification, such as a driver's license. A driver's license scanner reads data from the driver's license. The data read from a driver's license may include a hologram and/or a bar code.

Claims (68)

1. A tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium of execution with instructions encoded thereon for execution by a processor, and when executed operable to:

automatically through an operation of an automated banking machine, wherein the automated banking machine comprises a display, a check acceptor, and a card reader;

wherein the processor is associated with the automated banking machine;

obtain an electronic image corresponding to one side of a user input check from the check acceptor;

resolve check data from the electronic image, wherein the check data includes a check amount;

request identification of a user of the automated banking machine in the form of second card data responsive to the check amount exceeding a predetermined threshold amount; and

obtain first card data read through the operation of the first card reader;

verify the first card data corresponds to an account holder of the financial account, the card first data is sent to a first transaction authorization computer remote from the automated banking machine;

obtain second data through operation of a driver's license scanner, the second card data comprises a hologram, the second card data is sent to a second transaction authorization computer that is remote from the machine and that is different from the first transaction authorization computer;

verify the hologram is authentic; and

automatically cause the check amount to be credited to the financial account through the operation of the first transaction authorization computer remote from the automated banking machine responsive at least in part to verification of the first card data and verification that the hologram is authentic.

2. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 1 ,

wherein the automated banking machine further includes a cash dispenser;

wherein the instructions are further operable to cause the cash dispenser to operate to dispense a cash amount corresponding to the check amount responsive at least in part to the second transaction authorization computer.

The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 2 , wherein the second transaction authorization computer causes the cash dispenser operation responsive at least in part to at least one input received by the second authorization computer through an input device activated by a human service provider.

4. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 1 ,

wherein the automated banking machine is associated with a camera, wherein the camera has a field of view adjacent the machine; and

wherein the instructions are further operable to enable signals corresponding to video to be communicated between the second transaction authorization computer and the machine, whereby two-way video communication with a remote service provider can be conducted.

5. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 1 ,

wherein the automated banking machine further includes a printer;

wherein the instructions are further operable to cause the printer to print a document responsive at least in part to one of a group consisting of an automatic operation of the first transaction authorization computer, and at least one human provided input received through at least one input device in operative connection with the second transaction authorization computer.

6. A tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium of execution with instructions encoded thereon for execution by a processor, and when executed operable to:

automatically through an operation of an automated banking machine, wherein the automated banking machine comprises a display, a check acceptor, and a card reader;

wherein the processor is associated with the automated banking machine;

obtain an electronic image corresponding to one side of a user input check from a check acceptor;

resolve check data from the electronic image, wherein the check data includes a check amount;

request identification of a user of the automated banking machine in the form of second card data responsive to the check amount exceeding a predetermined threshold amount; and

obtain first card data read through the operation of the card reader;

verify the first card data corresponds to an account holder of the financial account, the first card data is sent to a first transaction authorization computer remote from the automated banking machine;

obtain second card data through operation of a driver's license scanner, the second card data comprises a bar code, the second card data is sent to a second transaction authorization computer that is remote from the automated banking machine and is different than the first transaction authorization computer;

verify the bar code is authentic; and

automatically cause the check amount to be credited to the financial account through the operation of the first transaction authorization computer remote from the automated banking machine responsive at least in part to verification of the first card data and verification that the bar code is authentic.

7. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 6 ,

wherein the automated banking machine further includes a cash dispenser;

wherein the instructions are further operable to cause the cash dispenser to operate to dispense a cash amount corresponding to the check amount responsive at least in part to the second transaction authorization computer.

The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 7 , wherein the second transaction authorization computer causes the cash dispenser operation responsive at least in part to at least one input received by the second authorization computer through an input device activated by a human service provider.

9. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 6 ,

wherein the driver's license scanner is configured to read data from a driver's license; and

wherein the first card data corresponds to data read from a driver's license.

10. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 9 ,

wherein the automated banking machine is associated with a camera, wherein the camera has a field of view adjacent the machine; and

wherein the instructions are further operable to enable signals corresponding to video to be communicated between the second transaction authorization computer and the machine, whereby two-way video communication with a service provider at the second transaction authorization can be conducted.

11. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 6 ,

wherein the automated banking machine further includes a printer;

wherein the instructions are further operable to cause the printer to print a document responsive at least in part to one of a group consisting of an automatic operation of the first transaction authorization computer, and at least one human provided input received through at least one input device in operative connection with the second transaction authorization computer.

12. A tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium of execution with instructions encoded thereon for execution by a processor, and when executed operable to:

determine a financial account on which transactions are authorized to be conducted automatically through an operation of an automated banking machine, wherein the automated banking machine comprises a display, a check acceptor, and a card reader;

wherein the processor is associated with an automated banking machine;

obtain an electronic image corresponding to one side of a user input check from a check acceptor;

resolve check data from the electronic image, wherein the check data includes a check amount;

request identification of a user of the automated banking machine in the form of card data responsive to the check amount exceeding a predetermined threshold amount; and

obtain card data read through the operation of the card reader, the card data comprises first card data visible on the card and second card data encoded in a magnetic stripe;

verify the first card data matches the second card data;

verify the card data comprises data that corresponds to an account holder of the financial account, the card data to be sent to a second transaction authorization computer remote from the machine and that is different from a first transaction authorization computer; and

automatically cause the check amount to be credited to the financial account through the operation of the first transaction authorization computer remote from the automated banking machine responsive at least in part to verification of the card data.

13. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 12 ,

wherein the automated banking machine further includes a cash dispenser;

wherein the instructions are further operable to cause the cash dispenser to operate to dispense a cash amount corresponding to the check amount responsive at least in part to the second transaction authorization computer.

The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 13 , wherein the second transaction authorization computer causes the cash dispenser operation responsive at least in part to at least one input received by the second authorization computer through an input device activated by a human service provider.

15. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 12 ,

wherein the card reader is configured to read data from a driver's license; and

wherein the first card data corresponds to data read from a driver's license.

16. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 15 ,

wherein the automated banking machine is associated with a camera, wherein the camera has a field of view adjacent the machine; and

wherein the instructions are further operable to enable signals corresponding to video to be communicated between the second transaction authorization computer and the machine, whereby two-way video communication with a service provider at the second transaction authorization can be conducted.

17. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 12 ,

wherein the automated banking machine further includes a printer;

wherein the instructions are further operable to cause the printer to print a document responsive at least in part to one of a group consisting of an automatic operation of the first transaction authorization computer, and at least one human provided input received through at least one input device in operative connection with the second transaction authorization computer.
