Abstract

A system and method for the late-biding of time-based media in real-time. With late binding, the sender may create time-based media before or at the same time an active delivery route to the recipient is discovered. As soon as the route becomes available, the media is transmitted. The existing DNS and email infrastructure is possibly used for route discovery, while any real-time transmission protocol may be used for the actual delivery of the media. “Progressive” emails may also be used for the real-time delivery of time-based media.

Claims (49)

1. An application, embedded in a non-transitory tangible computer readable medium, the application intended to run on a first communication device and to support video messaging, the application configured to:

create a video message in response to an input indicative of an intent to create and send video media to one or more recipients, the video message having a message header containing recipient identification information for the one or more recipients, the recipient identification information uniquely identifying each of the one or more recipients;

at least partially process separately the message header and the video media of the video message by communicating the message header, including the recipient identification information, to a video service on a network before creation of the video media of the video message is complete; and

initiate streaming of the video media to the video service:

(a) without the first communication device knowing a location on the network for one or more second communication devices associated with the one or more recipients;

(b) regardless of whether any of the second communication devices are available or not available on the network; and

(c) without having to first establish an end-to-end connection over the network between the first communication device and any of the one or more second communication devices respectively;

wherein the initiation of the streaming of the video media enabling rendering of portions of the video media of the video message at any of the one or more second communication devices while the streaming of the video media is in progress.

2. The application of claim 1 , further configured to initiate the streaming of the video media of the video message to the video service without having to first receive permission to transmit from any of the one or more recipients.

The application of claim 1 , further configured to provide the message header to the video service so that the video service can use the recipient identification information, before the streaming of the video media of the video message is complete, to ascertain one or more IP addresses for locating and delivering packets containing the video media to the one or more second communication devices respectively.

4. The application of claim 1 , wherein the video message further comprises a media body for the video media, the video media dynamically added to the media body as the video media is created.

5. The application of claim 1 , wherein the recipient identification information is derived from a list of contacts maintained by a user of the first communication device.

6. The application of claim 1 , further configured to enable a user of the first communication device to at least partially render incoming video media of an incoming video message on the first communication device while the incoming video media is transmitted by a remote communication device.

7. The application of claim 1 , further configured to enable a user of the first communication device to render video media of a previously sent video message in a time-shifted mode some time after the video message was transmitted by a remote communication device.

8. The application of claim 1 , wherein the recipient identification information includes one or more unique identifiers for identifying the one or more recipients within an online social network.

9. The application of claim 1 , wherein the video media of the video message is trans-coded.

10. The application of claim 1 , wherein the video media of the video message is encrypted.

11. The application of claim 1 , further comprising a start function for initiating the creation and streaming of the video media of the video message by the first communication device.

12. The application of claim 1 , further configured to communicate the recipient identification information and stream the video media of the video message to one or more servers on the network, the one or more servers collectively cooperating to implement the video service.

13. A method, comprising:

arranging to provide an application to run on a first communication device, the application configured to enable the first communication device to:

identify a recipient;

transmit identifier information associated with the recipient to a video service located on a network; and

stream a video communication to the video service over the network;

maintaining and operating the video service on the network by:

arranging a plurality of servers on the network; and

configuring the plurality of servers collectively to:

receive the identifier information;

locate a second communication device on the network using the identifier information, the second communication device associated with the recipient;

receive the video communication streamed by the first communication device;

store the video communication in a storage location accessible by the video service; and

deliver portions of the video communication to the second communication device so that the delivered portions of the video communication can be rendered while the streaming of the video communication by the first communication device is still in progress;

wherein start of the transmission of the video communication by the first communication device occurs:

without having to first establish an end-to-end connection over the network between the first communication device and the second communication device;

independently of the video service ascertaining the location for the second communication device on the network; and

regardless of whether the second communication device is available or not available on the network.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the delivery of the portions of the video communication to the second communication device occurs while creation and streaming of the video communication is in progress by the first communication device.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the video communication defines a header containing the identifier information.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the video communication defines a body for video media associated with the video communication, the body having a duration commensurate with the duration of the video communication.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein locating the second communication device further comprises using the received identifier information to ascertain an IP address for the second communication device, the IP address used to locate and deliver the portions of the video communication to the second communication device over the network.

18. The method of claim 13 , further comprising transcoding the video communication.

19. The method of claim 13 , further comprising encrypting the video communication.

20. The method of claim 13 , further comprising configuring the video service to deliver the video communication from storage to the second communication device, the delivery of the video communication from storage enabling rendering of the video communication in a time-shifted mode.

21. The method of claim 13 , wherein the identifier information identifies the recipient among a plurality of users of an online social network.

22. The method of claim 13 , wherein the portions of the video communication delivered to the second communication device are packets containing media payloads.

23. The method of claim 13 , wherein the identifier information includes a plurality of identifiers associated with a plurality of recipients respectively, the plurality of identifiers used to determine location information to deliver the portions of the video communication to a plurality of second communication devices connected to the network and associated with the plurality of recipients respectively.

The method of claim 13 , further comprising arranging to provide a second instantiation of the application to run on the second communication device, the second instantiation of the application enabling the recipient to render the delivered portions of the video communication while the streaming of the video communication is still in progress by the first communication device.

25. The method of claim 13 , further comprising arranging to provide a second instantiation of the application to run on the second communication device, the second instantiation of the application enabling the recipient to render the video communication in a time-shifted mode.

26. The method of claim 13 , further comprising providing a notice of the video communication at the second communication device.
