Abstract

An oxidation catalyst is described for treating hydrocarbons in an exhaust gas produced by an internal combustion engine, wherein the oxidation catalyst comprises a region disposed on a substrate, wherein the region comprises ruthenium (Ru) supported on a support material comprising a refractory oxide.

Claims (48)

1. An oxidation catalyst for treating hydrocarbons in an exhaust gas produced by an internal combustion engine, wherein the oxidation catalyst comprises a first region disposed on a substrate, wherein the first region comprises ruthenium (Ru) supported on a first support material comprising a refractory oxide,

wherein the first region further comprises a noble metal (NM) supported on a second support material, wherein the noble metal is selected from the group consisting of platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), a combination or a mixture of platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd), and a combination or a mixture of palladium (Pd) and gold (Au), and

the oxidation catalyst further comprises a second region, wherein the second region comprises the noble metal supported on a second support material, and

wherein the first region is a first zone disposed at or near an outlet end of the substrate and the second region is a second zone disposed at or near an inlet end of the substrate.

2. An oxidation catalyst according to claim 1 , wherein the substrate is a flow-through monolith or a filtering monolith.

An oxidation catalyst for treating hydrocarbons in an exhaust gas produced by an internal combustion engine, wherein the oxidation catalyst comprises a first region disposed on a substrate, wherein the first region comprises ruthenium (Ru) supported on a first support material comprising a refractory oxide,

wherein the first region further comprises a noble metal (NM) supported on a second support material, wherein the noble metal is selected from the group consisting of platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), a combination or a mixture of platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd), and a combination or a mixture of palladium (Pd) and gold (Au), and

the oxidation catalyst further comprises a second region, wherein the second region comprises the noble metal supported on a second support material, and

wherein the second region is a second layer and the first region is a first zone, and wherein the first zone is disposed on the second layer at or near an outlet end of the substrate.

4. An oxidation catalyst according to claim 3 , wherein the substrate is a flow-through monolith or a filtering monolith.

An oxidation catalyst for treating hydrocarbons in an exhaust gas produced by an internal combustion engine, wherein the oxidation catalyst comprises a first region disposed on a substrate, wherein the first region comprises ruthenium (Ru) supported on a first support material comprising a refractory oxide,

wherein the first region further comprises a noble metal (NM) supported on a second support material, wherein the noble metal is selected from the group consisting of platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), a combination or a mixture of platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd), and a combination or a mixture of palladium (Pd) and gold (Au), and

the oxidation catalyst further comprises a second region, wherein the second region comprises the noble metal supported on a second support material, and

wherein the second region is a second layer and the first region is a first layer, and wherein the second layer is disposed on the first layer.

6. An oxidation catalyst according to claim 5 , wherein the substrate is a flow-through monolith or a filtering monolith.

An oxidation catalyst for treating hydrocarbons in an exhaust gas produced by an internal combustion engine, wherein the oxidation catalyst comprises a first region disposed on a substrate, wherein the first region comprises ruthenium (Ru) supported on a first support material comprising a refractory oxide,

wherein the first region further comprises a noble metal (NM) supported on a second support material, wherein the noble metal is selected from the group consisting of platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), a combination or a mixture of platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd), and a combination or a mixture of palladium (Pd) and gold (Au), and

the oxidation catalyst further comprises a second region, wherein the second region comprises the noble metal supported on a second support material, and

wherein the second region is a second zone disposed at or near an outlet end of the substrate and the first region is a first zone disposed at or near an inlet end of the substrate.

8. An oxidation catalyst according to claim 7 , wherein the substrate is a flow-through monolith or a filtering monolith.

An oxidation catalyst for treating hydrocarbons in an exhaust gas produced by an internal combustion engine, wherein the oxidation catalyst comprises a first region disposed on a substrate, wherein the first region comprises ruthenium (Ru) supported on a first support material comprising a refractory oxide,

wherein the first region further comprises a noble metal (NM) supported on a second support material, wherein the noble metal is selected from the group consisting of platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), a combination or a mixture of platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd), and a combination or a mixture of palladium (Pd) and gold (Au), and

the oxidation catalyst further comprises a second region, wherein the second region comprises the noble metal supported on a second support material, and

wherein the first region is a first layer and the second region is a second zone, and wherein the second zone is disposed on the first layer at or near an outlet end of the substrate.

10. An oxidation catalyst according to claim 9 , wherein the substrate is a flow-through monolith or a filtering monolith.

An oxidation catalyst for treating hydrocarbons in an exhaust gas produced by an internal combustion engine, wherein the oxidation catalyst comprises a first region disposed on a substrate, wherein the first region comprises ruthenium (Ru) supported on a first support material comprising a refractory oxide,

wherein the first region further comprises a noble metal (NM) supported on a second support material, wherein the noble metal is selected from the group consisting of platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), a combination or a mixture of platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd), and a combination or a mixture of palladium (Pd) and gold (Au), and

the oxidation catalyst further comprises a second region, wherein the second region comprises the noble metal supported on a second support material, and

wherein the first region is a first layer and the second region is a second layer, and wherein the first layer is disposed on the second layer.

12. An oxidation catalyst according to claim 11 , wherein the substrate is a flow-through monolith or a filtering monolith.

13. An exhaust system for treating hydrocarbons in an exhaust gas produced by an internal combustion engine, wherein the exhaust system comprises the oxidation catalyst of claim 1 and an emissions control device.

14. A vehicle comprising an internal combustion engine and an exhaust system according to claim 13 .

15. A vehicle according to claim 14 , wherein the internal combustion engine is a natural gas engine.

16. An exhaust system for treating hydrocarbons in an exhaust gas produced by an internal combustion engine, wherein the exhaust system comprises the oxidation catalyst of claim 3 and an emissions control device.

17. A vehicle comprising an internal combustion engine and an exhaust system according to claim 16 .

18. A vehicle according to claim 17 , wherein the internal combustion engine is a natural gas engine.

19. An exhaust system for treating hydrocarbons in an exhaust gas produced by an internal combustion engine, wherein the exhaust system comprises the oxidation catalyst of claim 5 and an emissions control device.

20. A vehicle comprising an internal combustion engine and an exhaust system according to claim 19 .

21. A vehicle according to claim 20 , wherein the internal combustion engine is a natural gas engine.

22. An exhaust system for treating hydrocarbons in an exhaust gas produced by an internal combustion engine, wherein the exhaust system comprises the oxidation catalyst of claim 7 and an emissions control device.

23. A vehicle comprising an internal combustion engine and an exhaust system according to claim 22 .

24. A vehicle according to claim 23 , wherein the internal combustion engine is a natural gas engine.

25. An exhaust system for treating hydrocarbons in an exhaust gas produced by an internal combustion engine, wherein the exhaust system comprises the oxidation catalyst of claim 9 and an emissions control device.

26. A vehicle comprising an internal combustion engine and an exhaust system according to claim 25 .

27. A vehicle according to claim 26 , wherein the internal combustion engine is a natural gas engine.

28. An exhaust system for treating hydrocarbons in an exhaust gas produced by an internal combustion engine, wherein the exhaust system comprises the oxidation catalyst of claim 11 and an emissions control device.

29. A vehicle comprising an internal combustion engine and an exhaust system according to claim 28 .

30. A vehicle according to claim 29 , wherein the internal combustion engine is a natural gas engine.
