Abstract

A staple cartridge assembly for use with a surgical instrument is disclosed. The staple cartridge assembly comprises a staple cartridge and a compressible tissue thickness compensator. The staple cartridge defines a longitudinal axis. The staple cartridge comprises a cartridge body and a plurality of staples stored in the cartridge body. The compressible tissue thickness compensator comprises a deck-facing side, a tissue-facing side, a first portion, and a second portion. The second portion comprises a curved depression on the tissue-facing side of the compressible tissue thickness compensator. The curved depression partially extends through the second portion of the compressible tissue thickness compensator. The curved depression is transverse to the longitudinal axis defined by the staple cartridge.

Claims (34)

1. A staple cartridge assembly for use with a surgical instrument, wherein the staple cartridge assembly comprises:

a staple cartridge defining a longitudinal axis, the staple cartridge comprising:

a cartridge body; and

a plurality of staples stored in the cartridge body; and

a compressible tissue thickness compensator, comprising:

a deck-facing side;

a tissue-facing side;

a first portion; and

a second portion, wherein the second portion comprises a curved depression on the tissue-facing side of the compressible tissue thickness compensator, wherein the curved depression partially extends through the second portion of the compressible tissue thickness compensator, and wherein the curved depression is transverse to the longitudinal axis defined by the staple cartridge.

2. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second portion comprises a different porosity than the first portion.

3. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second portion comprises a different density than the first portion.

4. A staple cartridge assembly for use with a surgical instrument, wherein the staple cartridge assembly comprises:

a staple cartridge defining a longitudinal axis, the staple cartridge comprising:

a cartridge body; and

a plurality of staples stored in the cartridge body; and

a compressible tissue thickness compensator, comprising:

a deck-facing side;

a tissue-facing side;

a first portion; and

a second portion, wherein the second portion comprises a groove configured to accommodate a tubular structure on the tissue-facing side of the compressible tissue thickness compensator, wherein the groove extends along the width of the compressible tissue thickness compensator, and wherein the groove is transverse to the longitudinal axis defined by the staple cartridge.

5. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 4 , wherein the second portion comprises a different porosity than the first portion.

6. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 4 , wherein the second portion comprises a different density than the first portion.

7. A staple cartridge assembly for use with a surgical instrument, wherein the staple cartridge assembly comprises:

a staple cartridge defining a longitudinal axis, the staple cartridge comprising:

a cartridge body; and

a plurality of staples stored in the cartridge body; and

a compressible tissue thickness compensator, comprising:

a deck-facing side;

a tissue-facing side;

a width;

a first portion; and

a second portion, wherein the second portion comprises an arcuate shape on the tissue-facing side, wherein the arcuate shape extends across the entire width of the tissue thickness compensator, and wherein the arcuate shape is transverse to the longitudinal axis defined by the staple cartridge.

8. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 7 , wherein the second portion comprises a different porosity than the first portion.

9. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 7 , wherein the second portion comprises a different density than the first portion.
