Abstract

A vacuum cleaner includes an improved dual-action filter cleaning mechanism using both a rotational flicking action and a vertical shaking action. A debris removal assembly of the vacuum cleaner can include a filter assembly having a first filter and a second filter arranged in a nested configuration, and a filter cleaning mechanism configured to impart a combination of vertical shaking of the first filter and rotational flicking of the second filter. The filter cleaning mechanism can include a camming mechanism configured to simultaneously move the first filter along the axis and rotate the first filter about the axis while the second filter remains stationary.

Claims (24)

1. A vacuum cleaner comprising:

a working air path comprising a dirty air inlet and a clean air outlet;

a motor/fan assembly in fluid communication with the dirty air inlet; and

a debris removal assembly including a filter assembly, the filter assembly comprising:

a first filter at least partially defining an interior and supported by a frame having at least one support with at least one rib extending from the at least one support into the interior;

a second filter located within the interior and arranged in a nested configuration with the first filter about an axis; and

a filter cleaning mechanism configured to impart a combination of vertical shaking of the first filter and rotational flicking of the second filter wherein the filter cleaning mechanism comprises a camming mechanism configured to simultaneously move the first filter axially along the axis and rotate the first filter about the axis to impart the vertical shaking while the second filter remains stationary and movement of the first filter about the axis causes the at least one rib to contact portions of the second filter to impart the rotational flicking.

2. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the first filter comprises a mesh screen and the second filter comprises a pleated filter media.

3. The vacuum cleaner of claim 2 wherein the at least one rib of the first filter comprises multiple vertically extending inwardly protruding ribs in register with the second filter.

4. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the filter cleaning mechanism comprises a filter cleaning key coupled with the first filter and adapted for rotation by a user about a key axis.

5. The vacuum cleaner of claim 4 wherein the camming mechanism inter-engaging ramps forming a cam surface and cam follower surface on the filter cleaning key and the second filter.

6. The vacuum cleaner of claim 5 wherein the at least one rib of the first filter comprises multiple vertically extending inwardly protruding ribs in register with the second filter.

7. The vacuum cleaner of claim 6 wherein the filter cleaning mechanism further comprises a spring biasing the filter cleaning key and the first filter upwardly along the key axis.

8. The vacuum cleaner of claim 4 wherein the filter cleaning key is rotatably mounted to the second filter.

9. The vacuum cleaner of claim 4 wherein the filter cleaning key comprises a handle portion that is accessible from an upper side of the debris removal assembly, a shaft coupled with the handle portion, and a lower key portion that is slidably received on the shaft.

10. The vacuum cleaner of claim 9 wherein the second filter comprises a frame with a hub, and the shaft extends into the hub, and the lower key portion is received within the hub.

11. The vacuum cleaner of claim 4 wherein the filter cleaning mechanism further comprises a spring biasing the filter cleaning key upwardly along the key axis.

12. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the filter cleaning mechanism further comprises a bayonet connector mounting the filter cleaning key to the first filter.

13. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the filter assembly is provided downstream of the dirty air inlet and upstream of the motor/fan assembly, with the working air path extending through the filter assembly.

14. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the debris removal assembly further comprises a dirt cup, and the filter assembly is located within the dirt cup.

15. The vacuum cleaner of claim 14 , further comprising a motor housing for the motor/fan assembly, wherein the dirt cup is removably coupled to the motor housing and the clean air outlet is formed in the motor housing.

16. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the vacuum cleaner is an upright vacuum cleaner comprising a detachable handheld cleaning unit.

17. The vacuum cleaner of claim 16 , further comprising a housing that includes an upright stick body that is pivotally connected to a floor cleaning head having a suction nozzle defining the dirty air inlet, wherein the handheld cleaning unit is detachable from the upright stick body.

18. The vacuum cleaner of claim 1 wherein the vacuum cleaner is a handheld cleaning unit and comprises a hand-carriable unit with a handle grip, wherein the dirty air inlet and the clean air outlet are provided on the hand-carriable unit.
