Abstract

A manifold for a medical/surgical waste collection assembly. The manifold includes a housing shaped to be removably received within a manifold receiver of the medical/surgical waste collection assembly. An inlet fitting is coupled to the housing and adapted to be coupled with a suction line. An outlet opening is in fluid communication with the inlet fitting to define a fluid communication path from the suction line to the outlet opening and through a filter. The manifold includes a data carrier storing data useable to regulate operation of the medical/surgical waste collection assembly. The data carrier may include a radiofrequency identification tag having memory storing data suitable for determining whether the manifold is usable with the medical/surgical waste collection assembly. The RFID tag is adapted to be in electronic communication with a data reader when the manifold is coupled with the manifold receiver for communicating the data from the manifold.

Claims (31)

1. A manifold for a medical/surgical waste collection assembly including a data reader, said manifold comprising:

a housing shaped to be removably received within a manifold receiver of the medical/surgical waste collection assembly;

an inlet fitting coupled to said housing and adapted to be coupled with a suction line;

an outlet opening in fluid communication with said inlet fitting to define a fluid communication path from the suction line to said outlet opening;

a filter disposed within said fluid communication path; and

a data carrier storing data suitable for determining whether said manifold is usable with the medical/surgical waste collection assembly with said data carrier adapted to be in electronic communication with the data reader when said manifold is coupled with the manifold receiver for communicating said data from said manifold to the medical/surgical waste collection assembly.

2. The manifold of claim 1 , wherein said data comprises a use history of said manifold.

3. The manifold of claim 1 , wherein said data comprises a vacuum level.

4. The manifold of claim 1 , wherein said data comprises expiration data of said manifold.

5. The manifold of claim 1 , wherein said housing further comprises:

a base and an axis that extends through the base, the housing defining an outlet opening is located in the base and positioned to be off axis from the base axis; and

a plurality of tabs extending radially outwardly from said housing with said plurality of tabs subtending arcs having different arcuate lengths so as to orient said housing relative to a plurality of slots of the manifold receiver.

A method of operating a medical/surgical waste collection assembly including a waste collection unit including a container configured to store medical/surgical waste, a controller, and a data reader in communication with the controller, and a manifold including an inlet fitting, an outlet opening in fluid communication with the inlet fitting, a filter, and a data carrier storing data, said method comprising the steps of:

coupling a suction line to the inlet fitting; and

coupling the manifold with the medical/surgical waste collection unit to establish a fluid communication path from the suction line to the container through the manifold, wherein, upon coupling the manifold with the waste collection unit, electronic communication is established between the data carrier of the manifold and the data reader of the waste collection unit such that the data stored on the data carrier is communicated to the controller of the waste collection unit for controlling operation of the medical/surgical waste collection assembly.

7. A manifold for a medical/surgical waste collection assembly including a manifold receiver, said manifold comprising:

a housing shaped to be removably received within the manifold receiver of the medical/surgical waste collection assembly;

an inlet fitting coupled to said housing and adapted to be coupled with a suction line;

an outlet opening in fluid communication with said inlet fitting to define a fluid communication path from the suction line to said outlet opening;

a filter disposed within said fluid communication path; and

a data carrier storing data useable to regulate operation of the medical/surgical waste collection assembly when said manifold is received within the manifold receiver.

8. The manifold of claim 7 , wherein said housing further comprises:

a base and an axis that extends through the base, the housing defining an outlet opening is located in the base and positioned to be off axis from the base axis; and

a plurality of tabs extending radially outwardly from said housing with said plurality of tabs subtending arcs having different arcuate lengths so as to orient said housing relative to a plurality of slots of the manifold receiver.

A method of operating a medical/surgical waste collection assembly including a waste collection unit including a container for storing medical/surgical waste, a suction source in fluid communication with the container, a manifold receiver, a data reader coupled to the manifold receiver, a controller in electronic communication with the data reader, and a manifold including an inlet fitting adapted to be coupled with a suction line, an outlet opening in fluid communication with the inlet fitting to define a fluid communication path from the suction line to the outlet opening, a filter disposed within the fluid communication path, and a data carrier storing data, said method comprising the steps of:

reading, with the data reader, the data stored on the data carrier when the manifold is coupled with the manifold receiver;

forwarding the data to the controller;

determining with the controller whether the manifold is usable with the medical/surgical waste collection assembly based on the data; and

controlling operation of the medical/surgical waste collection assembly.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the step of controlling operation of the medical/surgical waste collection assembly further comprises regulating operation of the suction source.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the data includes at least one of expiration data and use history data.
