Abstract

According to one embodiment, a display device includes a first substrate including a first insulative substrate, an outer peripheral wiring formed above the first insulative substrate, an insulation film disposed on the outer peripheral wiring, a pixel electrode formed on the insulation film in an active area for displaying an image, and a first bank formed in a line shape on the insulation film in a peripheral area surrounding the active area, a second substrate including at least a second insulative substrate, and a sealant which is provided in a manner to envelop the first bank, and which attaches the first substrate and the second substrate.

Claims (20)

1. A display device comprising:

a first substrate including a plurality of pixels in an active area;

a second substrate including a color filter in the active area, a light-shield layer in a peripheral area surrounding the active area, an overcoat layer covering the light-shield layer in the peripheral area, a bank on the overcoat layer in the peripheral area, and an alignment film in the peripheral area;

a sealant which attaches the first substrate and the second substrate and has a first side and a second side; and

a liquid crystal layer held surrounded by the sealant; wherein

the first side of the sealant is in contact with the liquid crystal layer,

the second side of the sealant is opposed to the first side,

the alignment film extends to a second substrate end portion, and is in contact with the sealant,

the bank is located between the first side of the sealant and the second substrate end portion, and

the bank has a top surface and a bottom surface, the bottom surface is in contact with the overcoat layer, and the top surface is in contact with the alignment film.

2. The display device of claim 1 , wherein a thickness of the bank is smaller than a thickness of the liquid crystal layer.

3. The display device of claim 2 , wherein a cross-sectional shape of the bank is a tapered shape.

4. The display device of claim 3 , wherein the second substrate has a substantially rectangular shape, and

the bank is formed in a wall shape on at least three sides surrounding the active area.

5. The display device of claim 3 , wherein the second substrate has a substantially rectangular shape, and

the bank is formed in a wall shape on all four sides surrounding the active area.

6. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the overcoat layer extends to the active area, and covers the color filter in the active area, and

a thickness of the overcoat layer in the peripheral area is larger than a thickness of the overcoat layer in the active area.

7. The display device of claim 1 , wherein the alignment film extends to the active area, and

a thickness of the alignment film in the peripheral area is larger than a thickness of the alignment film in the active area.
