Abstract

A vitrectomy apparatus is provided, including a disposable cutter that incorporates a linear voice coil motor to generate consistent and rapid guillotine action without the use of a rotary motor or traditional linear motor. The apparatus includes voice coil actuator to provide for a forward and backward reciprocating motion cutting blade.

Claims (18)

1. A vitrectomy apparatus, comprising: a vitrectomy hand piece comprising a guillotine cutting device, the device comprising: a bobbin assembly in communication with an internal cutting shaft, the bobbin assembly comprising a bobbin and one or more pieces of magnetic wiring, and wherein the bobbin assembly is capable of generating a magnetic field in response to an applied voltage; at least one magnet located near the center of the guillotine cutting device; and at least one internal shell; wherein the bobbin assembly moves forward and backward based on a difference in polarity of the magnet in response to a generated magnetic field of voltage applied to the one or more pieces of magnetic wiring; and wherein the vitrectomy hand piece comprises a tube communicatively connected to the internal cutting shaft suitable for fluid flow through or around the apparatus, and wherein motion of the bobbin is bounded by one or more dampening materials, wherein the one or more dampening materials is fixed to the at least one magnet.

2. The vitrectomy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the one or more dampening materials comprise one or more of: silicone, rubber, foam, metal, or plastic.

3. The vitrectomy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the bobbin assembly is wound with the one or more pieces of magnetic wiring.

4. The vitrectomy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the bobbin assembly is affixed to the internal cutting shaft.

5. The vitrectomy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the at least one magnet is affixed to the at least one internal shell.

6. The vitrectomy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the fluid flow comprises aspirated fluid from a surgical site.

7. The vitrectomy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the bobbin assembly is between the at least one magnet and the at least one internal shell.

8. The vitrectomy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the internal shell comprises a magnet housing.

9. The vitrectomy apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the magnet housing is composed of a ferrous material.

10. The vitrectomy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a shape of the magnet enhances the magnetic field density of the generated magnetic field.

11. The vitrectomy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a shape of the shell enhances the magnetic field density of the generated magnetic field.

12. The vitrectomy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a shape of the bobbin assembly enhances the magnetic field density of the generated magnetic field.

13. The vitrectomy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the internal shaft is at least partially encompassed by the at least one magnet.

14. The vitrectomy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the tube is communicatively connected to the internal cutting shaft proximate to the bobbin assembly.

15. The vitrectomy apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the tube is communicatively connected to the internal cutting shaft proximate to distal end of the handpiece.

16. A vitrectomy apparatus, comprising: a vitrectomy hand piece comprising a guillotine cutting device, the device comprising: a bobbin assembly in communication with an internal cutting shaft, the bobbin assembly comprising one or more pieces of magnetic wiring wrapped around a bobbin and capable of generating a magnetic field in response to an applied voltage; and at least one magnet located near the center of the guillotine cutting device; and at least one internal shell; wherein the bobbin assembly moves forward and backward based on a difference in polarity of the magnet in response to a generated magnetic field of voltage applied to the one or more pieces of magnetic wiring; and wherein the vitrectomy hand piece comprises a tube communicatively connected to the internal cutting shaft suitable for fluid flow through or around the apparatus, wherein motion of the bobbin is bounded by one or more dampening materials, wherein the one or more dampening materials is fixed to the magnet, and wherein the one or more dampening materials comprise a spring.

17. A vitrectomy apparatus, comprising: a vitrectomy hand piece comprising a guillotine cutting device, the device comprising: a bobbin assembly in communication with an internal cutting shaft, the bobbin assembly comprising one or more pieces of magnetic wiring and capable of generating a magnetic field in response to an applied voltage; at least one magnet located near the center of the guillotine cutting device; and at least one internal shell; wherein the bobbin assembly moves forward and backward based on a difference in polarity of the magnet in response to a generated magnetic field of voltage applied to the one or more pieces of magnetic wiring; wherein the vitrectomy hand piece comprises a tube communicatively connected to the internal cutting shaft suitable for fluid flow through or around the apparatus, the internal shell comprises a magnet housing, the magnet housing is composed of a ferrous material, and only a portion of the magnetic housing comprises a ferrous material.

18. The vitrectomy apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the ferrous portion directs a portion of the magnetic field.
