Abstract

Floor panels are shown, which are provided with a mechanical locking system that may be locked with a vertical displacement of a first panel against a second panel. The locking system includes a flexible strip that during locking bends upwardly or downwardly. The locking system includes a first and a second joint edge section with different locking functions. One section provides a horizontal locking and another section provides a vertical locking.

Claims (24)

1. A set of essentially identical floor panels provided with a mechanical locking system comprising a strip extending horizontally from a lower part of a first edge and a downwardly open locking groove formed in an adjacent second edge,

the strip comprising an upwardly protruding locking element which is configured to cooperate with the locking groove for locking the first edge and the second edge in a horizontal direction parallel to a main plane of the panels and in a vertical direction being perpendicular to the horizontal direction, wherein the locking element and the locking groove comprise an upper locking surface and a lower locking surface which are configured to lock the panels vertically,

wherein the upper locking surface is located in an upper part of the locking element facing an upper edge of the first panel,

wherein the first edge includes an upper part, and a middle part between the upper part and the lower part,

wherein the upper part extends further than the middle part horizontally toward the adjacent second edge,

wherein the upper locking surface is inclined or rounded and extends from the locking element and towards an inner part of the panel such that a tangent line TL to the upper locking surface of the locking element intersects the first edge at the upper part of the first edge, and

wherein a tangent line to the lower locking surface of the locking groove intersects the first edge at the upper part of the first edge in a locked state of the mechanical locking system.

2. The set of floor panels according to claim 1 , wherein the locking system is configured to be locked with a vertical displacement of the second edge against the first edge.

3. The set of floor panels according to claim 1 , wherein the locking system is configured such that a vertical displacement of the second edge against the first edge during locking bends the strip downwards and turns the upper part of the locking element outwardly away from the upper edge.

4. The set of floor panels according to claim 1 , wherein the locking surfaces are configured such that the upper and lower locking surfaces comprise upper and lower guiding surfaces that overlap each other during the downward bending of the strip.

5. The set of floor panels according to claim 4 , wherein the upper guiding surface is formed as an extension of the upper locking surface and the lower guiding surface is formed as an extension of the lower locking surface.

6. The set of floor panels according to claim 1 , wherein the upper part of the locking element faces the upper edge of the first panel.

7. The set of floor panels according to claim 1 , wherein the tangent line is specified in a cross-sectional side view of the panels.

8. The set of floor panels according to claim 1 , wherein the mechanical locking system further comprises a lower support surface and an upper support surface that are formed in an upper part of the panels.

9. The set of floor panels according to claim 1 , wherein the upper locking surface is planar and inclined with respect to a front side of the first panel by an angle between 0° and 45°.

10. The set of floor panels according to claim 1 , wherein the upper locking surface is rounded and has a positive or a negative curvature.

11. The set of floor panels according to claim 10 , wherein tangent lines at one or several points of the upper locking surface intersect the first edge, as seen from a cross-sectional side view of the panels.

12. The set of floor panels according to claim 1 , wherein a shape of the upper locking surface corresponds to a shape of the lower locking surface.

13. The set of floor panels according to claim 1 , wherein the tangent line TL to the lower locking surface intersects an adjacent wall of the locking groove.

14. The set of floor panels according to claim 1 , wherein the upper locking surface is formed at an inner surface of the locking element and the lower locking surface is formed in an outer groove wall of the locking groove.

15. The set of floor panels according to claim 1 , wherein the lower locking surface and the upper locking surface are within 20 degrees of horizontal.

16. The set of floor panels according to claim 1 , wherein the mechanical locking system comprises a first edge section and a second edge section such that the geometry of the locking element and/or the locking groove varies along the edge.

17. The set of floor panels according to claim 16 , wherein the first edge section comprises locking means that locks the edges in a horizontal direction and the second edge section comprises locking means that locks the edges in a horizontal and a vertical direction.

18. The set of floor panels according to claim 1 , wherein the locking system is configured such that a controlled crack is provided in the material of the core during locking.
