Abstract

A device comprises a video capture device configured to generate video data, a processor, and a memory. The memory stores instructions executable by the processor to determine, based on a utilization of the processor, a value of an encoding parameter associated with encoding the video data.

Claims (40)

1. A device comprising:

a processor; and

a memory storing instructions executable by the processor to cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

encoding a first portion of video data at a first video quality level;

sending the encoded first portion of the video data via a network to a computing device;

determining a utilization level of the processor;

encoding, based on the utilization level, a second portion of the video data at a second video quality level that is less than the first video quality level;

sending the encoded second portion of the video data via the network to the computing device;

determining a second utilization level of the processor after encoding the second portion of the video data, the second utilization level greater than the utilization level; and

encoding, based on the second utilization level, a third portion of the video data, the third portion of the video data including audio but not video.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the memory further stores a threshold, and wherein the processor is configured to compare the utilization level to the threshold.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the memory further stores a plurality of thresholds, and wherein the processor is configured to compare the utilization level to each of the plurality of thresholds.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the encoded first portion of the video data comprises high definition video data.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise determining a value of an encoding parameter associated with operation of a second processor based on the utilization level of the processor.

6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the processor comprises a central processing unit (CPU) and wherein the second processor comprises a graphic processing unit (GPU).

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the second portion of the video data is encoded based further on whether the device is operating on battery power or power from an electrical outlet.

8. An apparatus comprising:

means for processing; and

means for storing instructions that, when executed by the means for processing, cause the means for processing to perform operations comprising:

encoding a first portion of video data at a first video quality level;

sending the encoded first portion of the video data via a network to a computing device;

determining a utilization level of the means for processing;

encoding, based on the utilization level, a second portion of the video data at a second video quality level that is less than the first video quality level;

sending the encoded second portion of the video data via the network to the computing device;

determining a second utilization level of the means for processing after encoding the second portion of the video data, the second utilization level greater than the utilization level; and

encoding, based on the second utilization level, a third portion of the video data, the third portion of the video data including audio but not video.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the encoded first portion of the video data comprises high definition video data.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the means for processing is further configured to compare the utilization level to a threshold.

11. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the means for processing is further configured to compare to the utilization level to each of a plurality of thresholds.

12. A computer-readable storage device storing instructions that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

encoding a first portion of video data at a first video quality level;

sending the encoded first portion of the video data via a network to a computing device;

determining a utilization level of the processor;

encoding, based on the utilization level, a second portion of the video data at a second video quality level that is less than the first video quality level;

sending the encoded second portion of the video data via the network to the computing device;

determining a second utilization level of the processor after encoding the second portion of the video data, the second utilization level greater than the utilization level; and

encoding, based on the second utilization level, a third portion of the video data, the third portion of the video data including audio but not video.

13. The computer-readable storage device of claim 12 , wherein the encoded first portion of the video data comprises high definition video data.

14. The computer-readable storage device of claim 12 , wherein the operations further comprise comparing the utilization level to a threshold prior to encoding the second portion of the video data.

15. The computer-readable storage device of claim 12 , wherein the third portion of the video data is encoded based further on a determination that the processor is operating on battery power.
