Abstract

A wireless streaming system includes a wireless network interface circuit to receive streaming content from a wireless router. A processor is connected to the wireless network interface circuit. A memory is connected to the processor. The memory stores instructions executed by the processor to enter a sleep mode that periodically invokes a wireless interface chip off state and a wireless interface chip on state. The sleep mode is exited in response to the receipt of a wake packet observed during the wireless interface chip on state.

Claims (42)

1. A remote control, comprising:

a wireless interface circuit configured to communicate with a wireless media system, wherein the wireless media system periodically invokes a wireless interface chip on state and off state; and

a processor coupled to the wireless interface circuit, the processor configured to:

identify a remote control input during a sleep state of the remote control;

probe the wireless media system in response to the remote control input;

identify a lack of response to the probe by the wireless media system; and

continuously transmit a message to the wireless media system via the wireless interface circuit until the wireless interface circuit detects that the wireless media system has received the message during a wireless media system on state, wherein the message is a wake message.

2. The remote control of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

enter the sleep state in response to a sleep state command.

3. The remote control of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

enter the sleep mode in response to an absence of activity by the wireless media system for a period of time exceeding a threshold.

4. The remote control of claim 1 , wherein the wake message is a packet associated with a Wake on Wireless Local Area Network (WoWLAN) standard.

5. The remote control of claim 1 , wherein the remote control input comprises a detection of an accelerometer signal exceeding a threshold.

6. The remote control of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to periodically transmit the message to the wireless media system until the wireless interface circuit receives a response from the wireless media system.

7. A method, comprising:

identifying a remote control input during a sleep state of a remote control;

probing a wireless media system in response to identifying the remote control input, wherein the wireless media system periodically invokes a wireless interface chip on state and off state;

identifying a lack of response to the probe by the wireless media system; and

continuously transmitting a message to the wireless media system via a wireless interface circuit until detecting that the wireless streaming system has received the message during a wireless media system on state, wherein the message is a wake message.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

entering the sleep state in response to a sleep state command.

9. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

entering the sleep mode in response to an absence of activity by the wireless media system for a period of time exceeding a threshold.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the wake message is a packet associated with a Wake on Wireless Local Area Network (WoWLAN) standard.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the remote control input comprises a detection of an accelerometer signal exceeding a threshold.

12. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

periodically transmitting the message to the wireless media system until receiving a response from the wireless media system.

13. A non-transitory computer-readable device having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by at least one computing device, causes the at least one computing device to perform operations comprising:

identifying a remote control input during a sleep state of a remote control;

probing a wireless media system in response to identifying the remote control input, wherein the wireless media system periodically invokes a wireless interface chip on state and off state;

identifying a lack of response to the probe by the wireless media system; and

continuously transmitting a message to the wireless media system via a wireless interface circuit until detecting that the wireless streaming system has received the message during a wireless media system on state, wherein the message is a wake message.

14. The computer-readable device of claim 13 , the operations further comprising:

entering the sleep state in response to a sleep state command.

15. The computer-readable device of claim 13 , the operations further comprising:

entering the sleep mode in response to an absence of activity by the wireless media system for a period of time exceeding a threshold.

16. The computer-readable device of claim 13 , wherein the remote control input comprises a detection of an accelerometer signal exceeding a threshold.

17. The computer-readable device of claim 13 , the operations further comprising:

periodically transmitting the message to the wireless media system until receiving a response from the wireless media system.

18. The remote control of claim 1 , wherein the wake message is an unencrypted wake packet.

19. The method of claim 7 , wherein the wake message is an unencrypted wake packet.

20. The computer-readable device of claim 13 , wherein the wake message is an unencrypted wake packet.
