Abstract

Access network discovery and selection function (ANDSF) policies are extended to include a wireless local area network quality of service (Qos) parameter in order to create a ANDSF based QoS. This may be used by user equipment to set the uplink 802.11e User Priority (UP) for offloaded or evolved packet core-routed WiFi traffic.

wherein the providing the second WLAN QoS policy to the TWAN is done using an add traffic stream request,

wherein the traffic stream request comprises a traffic specification (TSPEC) and a traffic classification (TCLAS),

wherein the TCLAS specifies priority of the apparatus, wherein the apparatus is a user equipment, and

wherein the TSPEC is used by the user equipment to adjust a traffic requirement to the access point.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further operations comprising receiving instructions from a server to prefer the second WLAN QoS policy over the first WLAN QoS policy in case of a conflict between the second WLAN QoS policy and the first WLAN QoS policy.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , further operations comprising receiving instructions from a server to prefer the second WLAN QoS policy over the first WLAN QoS policy in case of a conflict between the second WLAN QoS policy and the first WLAN QoS policy, wherein the server is an access network discovery and selection function (ANDSF) server.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus transmits data to the TWAN using WiFi.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the second WLAN QoS policy is further based on the type of apparatus.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further operations comprising in response to determining the second WLAN QoS policy, setting uplink 802.11e media access control marking per QoS mapping for the data to be provided to the TWAN.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , further operations comprising receiving a confirmation that the second WLAN QoS policy provided to the TWAN is configured in the TWAN for data using the downlink of the access point (AP) of the TWAN.

8. A computer readable storage medium comprising computer executable instructions that when executed by a computing device cause said computing device to perform the instructions comprising:

attaching to an access point within a trusted WLAN access network (TWAN);

determining to use a first wireless local area network (WLAN) quality of service (QoS) policy for data using an uplink of an apparatus, wherein the first wireless WLAN QoS policy is associated with a first location information, wherein the first location information is used to determine use of the first wireless WLAN QoS policy;

determining a second WLAN QoS policy for the data using the uplink of the apparatus, wherein the second WLAN QoS policy is based on a location of the access point within the trusted WLAN access network (TWAN), wherein the second WLAN QoS policy is associated with a second location information, wherein the second location information is used to determine use of the second WLAN QoS policy; and

based on the location of the access point within the trusted WLAN access network (TWAN), providing the second WLAN QoS policy to the TWAN for data using a downlink or an uplink of an access point (AP) of the TWAN,

wherein the providing the second WLAN QoS policy to the TWAN is done using an add traffic stream request,

wherein the traffic stream request comprises a traffic specification (TSPEC) and a traffic classification (TCLAS), and

wherein the TSPEC is used by a user equipment to adjust a traffic requirement to the access point.

9. The computer readable storage medium of claim 8 , further operations comprising receiving instructions from a server to prefer the second WLAN QoS policy over the first WLAN QoS policy in case of a conflict between the second WLAN QoS policy and the first WLAN QoS policy.

10. The computer readable storage medium of claim 8 , further operations comprising receiving instructions from a server to prefer the second WLAN QoS policy over the first WLAN QoS policy in case of a conflict between the second WLAN QoS policy and the first WLAN QoS policy, wherein the server is an access network discovery and selection function (ANDSF) server.

11. The computer readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the apparatus transmits data to the TWAN using WiFi.

12. The computer readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the second WLAN QoS policy is based on the type of apparatus.

13. The computer readable storage medium of claim 8 , further operations comprising in response to determining the second WLAN QoS policy, setting uplink 802.11e media access control marking per QoS mapping for the data to be provided to the TWAN.

14. The computer readable storage medium of claim 8 , further operations comprising receiving a confirmation that the second WLAN QoS policy provided to the TWAN is configured in the TWAN for data using the downlink of the access point (AP) of the TWAN.
