Abstract

It is a method for manufacturing a liquid crystal display device in which an anchoring force causing liquid crystal molecules to be vertically aligned can be exerted sufficiently. A liquid crystal display device ( 1 ) including two substrates AM and CF and a liquid crystal layer ( 4 ) sandwiched therebetween can be manufactured. The liquid crystal display device manufacturing method includes: a first step of subjecting a surface of one of the substrates AM and CM that is to be in contact with the liquid crystal layer ( 4 ) to hydrophilization treatment; and a second step of disposing the two substrates AM and CF so as to face each other such that the two substrates are in contact with a liquid crystal composition containing liquid crystal molecules and an alignment aid having a polar group and having the function of causing the liquid crystal molecules to be aligned spontaneously.

Claims (20)

1. A liquid crystal display device manufacturing method for manufacturing a liquid crystal display device comprising: a first substrate, a second substrate and a liquid crystal layer sandwiched therebetween, the method comprising:

a first step of subjecting a surface of an organic insulating film provided on the first substrate to a hydrophilization treatment; and

a second step of disposing the first substrate and the second substrate to face each other such that the first substrate and the second substrate are in contact with the liquid crystal layer comprising a liquid crystal composition containing liquid crystal molecules and an alignment aid having a polar group and having the function of causing the liquid crystal molecules to be aligned spontaneously,

wherein the organic insulating film of the first substrate is in contact with the liquid crystal layer without an alignment layer,

wherein a contact surface of the organic insulating film contacting the liquid crystal layer subject to the hydrophilization treatment has a static contact angle of water at 25° C. is 70° or less.

2. The liquid crystal display device manufacturing method according to claim 1 , wherein the hydrophilization treatment is ozone treatment or UV treatment.

3. The liquid crystal display device manufacturing method according to claim 2 , wherein the ozone treatment is treatment performed in an ozone-containing atmosphere for 1 to 100 seconds.

4. The liquid crystal display device manufacturing method according to claim 1 , wherein the alignment aid has a polymerizable group that can be polymerized by irradiation with active energy rays, and

wherein the method further comprises a third step of, after the second step, irradiating the liquid crystal composition with the active energy rays to polymerize the alignment aid.

5. The liquid crystal display device manufacturing method according to claim 4 , wherein the liquid crystal composition further contains a polymerizable compound that can be polymerized by irradiation with the active energy rays, and

wherein the polymerizable compound is also polymerized in the third step.

6. The liquid crystal display device manufacturing method according to claim 1 , wherein the first substrate has a pixel electrode.

7. The liquid crystal display device manufacturing method according to claim 1 , wherein, in the first step, a surface of the second substrate that is to be in contact with the liquid crystal layer is also subjected to the hydrophilization treatment.

8. The liquid crystal display device manufacturing method according to claim 7 , wherein the second substrate is in direct contact with the liquid crystal layer with no alignment film therebetween.

9. The liquid crystal display device manufacturing method according to claim 7 , wherein the second substrate includes a color filter.

10. The liquid crystal display device manufacturing method according to claim 1 , wherein, in the second step, the liquid crystal composition is supplied onto the hydrophilized surface of the first substrate, such that the liquid crystal composition directly contacts the organic insulating film that has been subject to the hydrophilization treatment, followed by disposing the first substrate to be opposed to the second substrate such that the second substrate is in contact with the liquid crystal composition.

11. The liquid crystal display device manufacturing method according to claim 1 , wherein the liquid crystal display device is a PSA, PSVA, VA, IPS, FFS, or ECB mode liquid crystal display device.

12. The liquid crystal display device manufacturing method according to claim 1 , wherein the contact surface has a surface free energy of 50 mN/m or more.

13. The liquid crystal display device manufacturing method according to claim 1 , wherein the contact surface of the organic insulating film contacting the liquid crystal layer has the static contact angle of water at 25° C. is 40° to 70°.

14. The liquid crystal display device manufacturing method according to claim 12 , wherein the contact surface has the surface free energy of 50 mN/m to 85 mN/m.
