Abstract

The invention relates to ahydrolysable binder based on an ABAB type polysiloxane copolymer suitable for the preparation of coating compositions with an improved anti-adhesive and/or dirt-repellent surface.

Claims (57)

1 : A hydrolysable binder for a coating composition, the hydrolysable binder comprising:

the reaction product of: i) at least one polysiloxane of monomer A′ of formula (A″):

wherein each R 1 is methyl,

X and Y are the same and represent (CH 2 ) x′ —OH or —(CH 2 ) x′ —COOH or —(CH 2 ) x′ —COOR;

x′ is 1 to 5;

R is C1-6 alkyl; and

n is 10-300,

and

ii) at least one second monomer B′ of formula

RcOOC-Q-COORc  (formula B″)

or

Rc′O-Q-ORc′  (formula B′″)

where Q is an aliphatic, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, polyoxyalkylene or aromatic group having up to 20 carbon atoms or a covalent bond or a linear polysiloxane and each Rc and Rc′ are the same or different and represent H, C 1-20 alkyl, C 2-20 alkenyl, C 6-20 aryl, C 3-20 cycloalkyl group or C 7-20 arylalkyl group,

with the proviso that the Rc or Rc′ groups in (formula B″) or (formula B′″) are selected to react with the X and Y groups in monomer A′ to form an ester group,

wherein the hydrolysable binder is suitable for a coating composition that is not a marine coating composition.

2 : The hydrolysable binder as claimed in claim 1 , wherein monomer A′ is at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of:

wherein

X′ is 1 to 10; and

R 11 and R 12 are each independently C2-6 alkylene.

3 : The hydrolysable binder as claimed in claim 1 , wherein monomer B′ is

Rd is a saturated, unsaturated, or aromatic C 3 -C 8 ring; and

R 3 and R 4 are each independently a straight or branched chain C 1-20 alkyl group, a straight or branched chain C 2-10 alkenyl group, a C 6-20 aryl group, a C 7-20 arylalkyl group, or a C 3-20 cycloalkyl group.

5 : The hydrolysable binder as claimed in claim 1 , wherein

monomer B′ is HO-Q-OH diol where Q is an aliphatic, polyoxyalkylene, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl or aromatic group having up to 20 carbon atoms or a covalent bond.

6 : The hydrolysable binder as claimed in claim 1 , wherein

monomers A′ and B′ undergo a polymerisation reaction to form a copolymer of structure -[ABAB]-.

7 : The hydrolysable binder as claimed in claim 6 , wherein

the copolymer backbone contains a polyoxyalkylene moiety.

8 : A non-marine coating composition, comprising:

at least one hydrolysable binder as claimed in claim 1 , and

9 . (canceled)

10 : A method of making a coating composition, the method comprising:

adding the hydrolysable binder as claimed in claim 1 to a coating composition, wherein the coating composition exhibits an anti-adhesive-property, an anti-dirt-property, an easy-to-clean property, an anti-graffiti-property or an anti-fouling property in a non-marine application.

11 : The hydrolysable binder as claimed in claim 1 , wherein

x′ is 2 to 5 or is 3 to 5;

R is C1-6 alkyl; and

n is 15-100.

12 : The hydrolysable binder as claimed in claim 2 , wherein
