Abstract

Embodiments disclosed herein are directed to tilting pad bearing assemblies and bearing apparatuses using the same. As will be discussed in more detail below, the tilting pad bearing assemblies include a plurality of tilting pads. The tilting pads include at least one or more first tilting pads and one or more second tilting pads. Each of the first tilting pads includes a first superhard bearing surface having a first material. Each of the second tilting pads includes a second bearing surface having a second material. The first material includes a superhard material and the second material includes a material that is different than the first material.

Claims (40)

1. A bearing assembly, comprising:

a support ring; and

a plurality of tilting pads distributed circumferentially about an axis, each of the plurality of tilting pads tilted and/or tiltably secured relative to the support ring, wherein the plurality of tilting pads include:

one or more of first tilting pads, each of the one or more first tilting pads including a first superhard bearing surface including a first material comprising a superhard material; and

one or more of second tilting pads that are distinct from the one or more first tilting pads, each of the one or more second tilting pads including a second bearing surface comprising a second material that is different than the first material.

2. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more first tilting pads or the one or more second tilting pads includes a superhard table bonded to a substrate.

3. The bearing assembly of claim 2 , wherein the superhard table includes polycrystalline diamond.

4. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first material includes at least one of silicon carbide, silicon nitride, a reaction bonded ceramic, a carbide, or boron nitride.

5. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second material includes a superhard material.

6. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second material includes a non-superhard material.

7. The bearing assembly of claim 6 , wherein the non-superhard material includes at least one of a ceramic, a polymer, a composite, high carbon steel, low carbon steel, poly(aryl ether ketone), or bronze.

8. The bearing assembly of claim 6 , wherein the non-superhard material includes white metal, wherein the white metal includes tin or lead alloyed with at least one of tin, lead, copper, antimony, or arsenic.

9. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein a position of the first superhard bearing surface is adjustable depending on operational conditions of the bearing assembly.

10. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , further comprising one or more actuators positioned and configured to at least one of raise or lower at least one of the one or more first tilting pads or the one or more second tilting pads.

11. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , further comprising one or more third tilting pads that are distinct from the one or more first tilting pads and the one or more second tilting pads, each of the one or more third tilting pads includes a third bearing surface having a third material that is different than the first material and the second material.

12. The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein the axis is a thrust axis or a rotation axis.

13. A bearing apparatus, comprising:

a first bearing assembly including:

a first support ring; and

one or more bearing elements extending about an axis, the one or more bearing element including a bearing surface, wherein the one or more bearing elements are secured to the first support ring; and

a second bearing assembly including:

a second support ring; and

a plurality of tilting pads distributed circumferentially about an axis, each of the plurality of tilting pads tilted and/or tiltably secured relative to the second support ring, wherein the plurality of tilting pads include:

one or more of first tilting pads, each of the one or more first tilting pads including a first superhard bearing surface having a first material comprising a superhard material; and

one or more of second tilting pads that are distinct from the one or more first tilting pads, each of the one or more second tilting pads including a second bearing surface comprising a second material that is different than the first material.

14. The bearing apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the one or more bearing elements include an at least substantially continuous bearing element or a plurality of sliding bearing elements.

15. The bearing apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the one or more bearing elements include a superhard material.

16. The bearing apparatus of claim 13 , wherein at least one of the one or more first tilting pads or the one or more second tilting pads includes a superhard table bonded to a substrate.

17. The bearing apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the second material includes a non-superhard material.

18. The bearing apparatus of claim 13 , wherein a position of the first superhard bearing surface is adjustable.

19. A method of operating a bearing apparatus, the method comprising:

rotating a rotor relative to a stator;

wherein at least one of the stator or the rotor includes:

a first support ring; and

one or more bearing element extending about an axis, the one or more bearing element including a bearing surface, wherein the one or more bearing elements are secured to the first support ring; and

wherein the other of the stator or the rotor includes:

a second support ring; and

a plurality of tilting pads distributed circumferentially about an axis, each of the plurality of tilting pads tilted and/or tiltably secured relative to the second support ring, wherein the plurality of tilting pads include:

one or more of first tilting pads, each of the one or more first tilting pads including a first superhard bearing surface having a first material comprising a superhard material; and

one or more of second tilting pads that are distinct from the one or more first tilting pads, each of the one or more second tilting pads including a second bearing surface comprising a second material that is different than the first material.
