Abstract

Articles comprising pressure-sensitive adhesives with enhanced adhesion to wet surfaces, obtained from crosslinking a pre-adhesive composition comprising poly(meth)acrylate macromolecules that comprise a number-average molecular weight of from about 25000 to about 200000, and methods of using such articles.

Claims (26)

1. A wet-stick pressure-sensitive adhesive article, comprising:

a substrate comprising a wet-stick pressure-sensitive adhesive on a major surface of the substrate,

the wet-stick pressure-sensitive adhesive being a crosslinking reaction product of a pre-adhesive composition,

the pre-adhesive composition comprising poly(meth)acrylate macromolecules characterized by a number-average molecular weight of about 25000 to about 200000,

wherein the poly(meth)acrylate macromolecules are present in an amount of at least 90 wt % of the pre-adhesive composition, and

wherein the pre-adhesive composition exhibits a glass transition temperature (Tg) of less than minus 20° C. and exhibits a storage modulus of about 4 Pa to about 10000 Pa at 25° C.

2. The adhesive article of claim 1 , wherein the poly(meth)acrylate macromolecules are characterized by a number-average molecular weight of from about 25000 to about 100000.

3. The adhesive article of claim 1 , wherein the poly(meth)acrylate macromolecules are characterized by a number-average molecular weight of from about 25000 to about 40000.

4. The adhesive article of claim 1 , wherein the pre-adhesive composition exhibits a storage modulus of about 100 Pa to about 1000 Pa at 25° C.

5. The adhesive article of claim 1 , wherein the pre-adhesive composition exhibits a viscosity of about 10 Pa·s to about 800 Pa·s at 25° C.

6. The adhesive article of claim 1 , wherein the poly(meth)acrylate macromolecules are present in an amount of at least 95 wt. % of the pre-adhesive composition.

7. The adhesive article of claim 1 , wherein the (meth)acrylate monomers consist essentially of nonpolar (meth)acrylate monomers with a Tg of less than 0° C.

8. The adhesive article of claim 1 , wherein the (meth)acrylate monomers consist essentially of alkyl (meth)acrylate monomers.

9. The adhesive article of claim 1 , wherein the poly(meth)acrylate macromolecules are substantially linear macromolecules.

10. The adhesive article of claim 1 , wherein the wet-stick pressure-sensitive adhesive exhibits a Peak Pull Force of at least 3000 g when tested according to the Wet-Stick Test Method.

11. The adhesive article of claim 1 , the pre-adhesive composition further comprising about 2 wt. % to about 10 wt. % of a plasticizer, based on the total weight of the pre-adhesive composition.

12. The adhesive article of claim 1 , the pre-adhesive composition further comprising a chain transfer agent.

13. The adhesive article of claim 1 , wherein the wet-stick pressure-sensitive adhesive exhibits a gel content of about 40 to about 70%.

14. The adhesive article of claim 1 , wherein the crosslinking reaction product is formed via e-beam.

15. The adhesive article of claim 1 , the pre-adhesive composition further comprising a photo-activatable crosslinker monomer, wherein the crosslinking reaction product is formed via photo-irradiation.

16. The adhesive article of claim 1 , selected from the group consisting of a medical tape, an adhesive bandage, a wound dressing, a wound closure strip, a surgical drape, and a cannula retention device.

17. The adhesive article of claim 1 , selected from the group consisting of a monitoring or diagnostic electrode, a patient grounding plate, a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation device, a transdermal drug delivery device, and an ostomy appliance.

18. The adhesive article of claim 1 , with the proviso that the adhesive article does not comprise a pressure-sensitive adhesive other than the wet-stick pressure-sensitive adhesive.

19. A method of bonding the adhesive article of claim 1 to skin, the method comprising:

contacting the wet-stick pressure-sensitive adhesive of the adhesive article to the skin.

20. The method of claim 19 , with the proviso that no pressure-sensitive adhesive other than the wet-stick pressure-sensitive adhesive is used to bond the adhesive article to the skin.
