Abstract

Systems and methods for creating planar cuts on a bone are provided utilizing one or more cutting guides assembled to a plurality of bone pins, where the bone pins are inserted on the bone coincident with one or more virtual pin planes defined relative to one or more of the planar cuts. Alignment guides are also disclosed herein that aid in the creation of pilot holes for receiving a cutting block in a desired position and orientation (POSE). An articulating surgical device actively positions the bone pins coincident with the virtual plane to ensure the cutting guides, when assembled to the pins, aligns one or more guide slots in the desired POSE to create the planar cuts.

Claims (21)

1. A surgical device for inserting a pin in a bone comprising:

a hand-held portion;

a working portion movably connected to the hand-held portion;

a motor for driving the pin for insertion of the pin in the bone; and

an actuator system for moving the working portion relative to the hand-held portion in response to control signals corresponding to movement of at least one of the bone and the hand-held portion to maintain alignment of an axis of the pin coincident with a virtual plane having a predetermined location relative to the bone for insertion of the pin in the bone coincident with the virtual plane.

2. The device of claim 1 wherein the surgical device is powered by batteries.

3. The surgical device of claim 1 wherein the virtual plane is oriented with respect to a predetermined location for a cut surface to be created on the bone.

4. The surgical device of claim 3 wherein the virtual plane orientation is offset by a predetermined distance from the predetermined location for the cut surface.

5. The surgical device of claim 4 wherein the predetermined distance is based at least in part on a geometry of a cutting guide.

6. The surgical device of claim 1 further comprising the pin.

7. The surgical device of claim 1 wherein the control signals are generated by one or more computers.

8. The surgical device of claim 7 wherein the one or more computers receive position and orientation (POSE) data from a tracking system indicating a determined POSE of the surgical device.

9. The surgical device of claim 8 further comprising the one or more computers.

10. The surgical device of claim 9 wherein the one or more computers are housed in the hand-held portion.

11. The surgical device of claim 8 wherein the one or more computers wirelessly receive the POSE data from the tracking system.

12. The surgical device of claim 8 wherein the tracking system is an optical tracking system.

13. The surgical device of claim 1 wherein the actuator system comprises a first actuator and a second actuator to move the working portion translation relative to the hand-held portion in response to the control signals.

14. The surgical device of claim 1 wherein the working portion further comprises three or more fiducial markers that are tracked by a tracking system.

15. The surgical device of claim 14 wherein the three or more fiducial markers are on a tracking array and the tracking array is attached to the working portion.

16. The surgical device of claim 1 wherein the motor drives the pin by rotating the pin about the axis of the pin.

17. The surgical device of claim 1 wherein the bone is subject to knee arthroplasty.
