Abstract

Features and techniques are disclosed for interacting with paginated digital content, including a multi-purpose tool and an annotation mode. The multi-purpose tool, which may be represented by a graphic (e.g., a movable interactive graphic), can provide access to multiple modes (e.g., copy, define, note, and/or highlight modes) that a user can invoke. The mode invoked determines the functions performed by the tool when interacting with the paginated digital content. The annotation mode, which may be invoked using the multi-purpose tool or independently thereof, can allow a user to create and edit annotations, such as highlights and notes (e.g., sticky notes, margin notes, and/or highlight notes), for paginated digital content. Editing the annotations may include selecting a desired color for the annotation, for example. The annotation mode may also allow a user to intuitively merge and delete annotations previously added to paginated digital content.

Claims (27)

1 . An electronic device, comprising:

a display for presenting paginated digital content; and

a user interface including an annotation mode, the annotation mode allowing a user to add annotations in the form of highlights and/or notes to the paginated digital content, wherein, in response to user input, the annotation mode is further configured to present one or more annotations in a list view.

2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the list view presented by the annotation mode is filterable.

3 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the list view presented by the annotation mode is filterable based on one or more user-provided search terms.

4 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the list view presented by the annotation mode is filterable based on annotation type.

5 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the list view presented by the annotation mode is filterable based on annotation color.

6 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the list view presented by the annotation mode is searchable independent of the paginated digital content.

7 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more annotations include one or more highlights added to the paginated digital content.

8 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more annotations include one or more notes added to the paginated digital content.

9 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the list view presented by the annotation mode includes one or more portions of the paginated digital content associated with the notes.

10 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the list view presented by the annotation mode is based on corresponding order within the paginated digital content.

11 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the list view presented by the annotation mode is organized by chapters and/or sub-headings of the paginated digital content.

12 . A mobile computing device, comprising:

a processor;

a touch screen display for displaying paginated digital content to a user and allowing user input; and

a user interface executable by the processor and including an annotation mode, wherein, in response to user input, the annotation mode is configured to add annotations in the form of highlights and/or notes to the paginated digital content, and wherein, in response to additional user input, the annotation mode is further configured to present one or more annotations previously added to the paginated digital content as a group.

13 . The device of claim 12 , wherein the group presented by the annotation mode is based on user-provided search terms.

14 . The device of claim 12 , wherein the group presented by the annotation mode is based on annotation type.

15 . A computer program product including one or more non-transitory machine readable mediums encoded with instructions that when executed by one or more processors cause a process to be carried out, the process comprising:

present for display paginated digital content and one or more annotations associated with the paginated digital content, wherein the one or more annotations are in the form of highlights and/or notes and are presented at corresponding locations in the paginated digital content; and

in response to user input, present the one or more annotations associated with the paginated digital content in a list view.

16 . The non-transitory computer product of claim 15 , the process further comprising, in response to one or more user-provided search terms, filter the list view presented based on the one or more user-provided search terms.

17 . The non-transitory computer product of claim 15 , the process further comprising, in response to additional user input, filter the list view presented based on annotation type.

18 . The non-transitory computer product of claim 15 , the process further comprising, in response to additional user input, filter the list view presented based on annotation color.

19 . The non-transitory computer product of claim 15 , wherein the list view is searchable independent of the paginated digital content.

20 . The non-transitory computer product of claim 15 , wherein the corresponding locations in the paginated digital content include one or more margin locations and/or one or more locations over text of the paginated digital content.
