Abstract

Embodiments of golf club heads and methods to manufacture golf club heads are generally described herein. In one example, a golf club head may include a body portion including a first material and having a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, a sole portion, a back portion, a front portion having a face portion. The golf club head may also include a third mass portion including a second material and coupled to the body portion, and a plurality of mass portions coupled to the third mass portion. The density of the second material is greater than a density of the first material. The interior cavity may include an elastic polymer material. Other examples and embodiments may be described and claimed.

Claims (35)

1 . A golf club head comprising:

a body portion associated with a first mass and made of a first material, the body portion having a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, a sole portion, a back portion, and an interior cavity partially or entirely filled with a polymer material having a first coefficient of restitution (COR) greater than or equal to 0.7 when an initial velocity is greater than or equal to 100 feet per second;

at least one mass portion associated with a second mass and made of a second material, the at least one mass portion located at or below a horizontal midplane of the golf club head;

a port connected to the interior cavity; and

a face portion having a second COR and a thickness of less than or equal to 1.905 millimeters (0.075 inch),

wherein the first mass is greater than or equal to the second mass, and

wherein the first and second CORs are associated with a COR ratio of less than two (2).

2 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 further comprising a bonding portion configured to bond the polymer material to the face portion.

3 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the at least one mass portion comprises a tungsten material.

4 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the interior cavity is partially or entirely filled with the polymer material from the port.

5 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first COR is greater than 0.7 and less than or equal to 0.9 when the initial velocity is greater than 100 feet per second.

6 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the COR ratio is in a range from about 0.8 to about 1.2.

7 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , further comprising a bonding portion configured to bond the polymer material to the face portion, wherein a ratio of the face portion thickness and a thickness of the bonding portion is greater than or equal to 0.1 and less than or equal to 4.0.

8 . A golf club head comprising:

a body portion made of a first material, the body portion having a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, a sole portion, a back portion, and an interior cavity partially or entirely filled with a second material having a first coefficient of restitution (COR) greater than or equal to 0.7 when an initial velocity is greater than or equal to 100 feet per second;

at least one mass portion made of a third material, the at least one mass portion located at or below a horizontal midplane of the golf club head; and

a face portion having a second COR and a thickness of less than or equal to 1.905 millimeters (0.075 inch),

wherein the first and second CORs are associated with a COR ratio.

9 . A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the second material comprises an elastic polymer material.

10 . A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the COR ratio is less than two (2).

11 . A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the COR ratio is in a range from about 0.8 to about 1.2.

12 . A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the first COR is greater than 0.7 and less than or equal to 0.9 when the initial velocity is greater than 100 feet per second.

13 . A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the interior cavity is associated with an interior cavity volume, and wherein the interior cavity volume is related to a body portion volume by equation 0.2≦V c /V b ≦0.5, where V c is the interior cavity volume in units of in 3 , and V b is the body portion volume in units of in 3 .

14 . A golf club head as defined in claim 8 further comprising a bonding portion configured to bond the second material to the face portion, wherein a ratio of the face portion thickness and a thickness of the bonding portion is greater than or equal to 0.1 and less than or equal to 4.0.

15 . A golf club head comprising:

a body portion made of a first material, the body portion having a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, a sole portion, a back portion, and an interior cavity;

a face portion having a face portion thickness; and

a cavity filling portion configured to partially or entirely fill the interior cavity, the cavity filling portion having a first portion and a second portion made of a second material, the first portion configured to attach the second portion to the face portion, the second portion having a coefficient of restitution greater than or equal to 0.7 when an initial velocity is greater than or equal to 100 feet per second, and

wherein a ratio of the face portion thickness and a thickness of the first portion of the cavity filling portion is greater than or equal to 0.1 and less than or equal to 4.0, and

wherein the first material is different from the second material.

16 . A golf club head as defined in claim 15 , wherein the second portion of the cavity filling portion comprises an elastic polymer material and the first portion of the cavity filling portion comprises an epoxy material.

17 . A golf club head as defined in claim 15 , wherein the face portion thickness is related to the volume of the second material by equation 0.01≦T f /V e ≦0.2, where T f is the face portion thickness in units of inches, and V e is the volume of the second material in units of in 3 .

18 . A golf club head as defined in claim 15 , wherein the interior cavity is associated with an interior cavity volume, and wherein the interior cavity volume is related to a body portion volume by equation 0.2≦V c /V b ≦0.5, where V e is the interior cavity volume in units of in 3 , and V b is the body portion volume in units of in 3 .
