Abstract

Methods and systems disclosed herein relate to determining a projected change in bandwidth demand in a specified area during a specified future time period, repositioning one or more balloons in a high-altitude balloon network based on the projected change in bandwidth demand, and providing, using the one or more balloons, at least a portion of the bandwidth demanded in the specified area during the specified future time period.

Claims (44)

1. A method comprising:

based at least on an advance request for bandwidth in a specified area at a specified future time period having a beginning and a finite duration, projecting a future bandwidth demand in the specified area;

before the specified future time period begins and based on the projected future bandwidth demand, causing one or more balloons in a high-altitude balloon network to move into airspace over the specified area;

determining a priority level related to the future bandwidth demand; and

providing, using the one or more balloons in the high-altitude balloon network, bandwidth in the specified area during the specified future time period, wherein providing bandwidth in the specified area during the specified future time period comprises providing bandwidth in the specified area during the specified future time period based on the priority level.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving the advance request for bandwidth in the specified area at the specified future time period.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the advance request for bandwidth relates to a planned event in the specified area during the specified future time period.

4. The method of claim 3 ,

wherein the planned event is specified as part of publicly available information, and

wherein projecting the future bandwidth demand in the specified area is based on the publically available information.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving the advance request for bandwidth from a target user of the high-altitude balloon network,

wherein providing bandwidth in the specified area during the specified future time period comprises providing bandwidth to at least the target user in the specified area during the specified future time period.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein providing bandwidth in the specified area during the specified future time period comprises controlling a balloon network density in the high-altitude balloon network substantially over the specified area based at least on the future bandwidth demand.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein controlling the balloon network density comprises increasing the balloon network density over the specified area based at least on the future bandwidth demand.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

after the specified time period, repositioning the one or more balloons to a previous coverage arrangement.

9. A system comprising:

a plurality of balloons in a high-altitude balloon network; and

a controller configured to:

based at least on an advance request for bandwidth in a specified area at a specified future time period having a beginning and a finite duration, project a future bandwidth demand in the specified area;

before the specified future time period begins and based on the projected future bandwidth demand, cause one or more of the plurality of balloons in the high-altitude balloon network to move into airspace over the specified area;

determine a priority level related to the future bandwidth demand; and

cause the one or more balloons in the high-altitude balloon network to provide bandwidth in the specified area during the specified future time period, wherein providing bandwidth in the specified area during the specified future time period comprises providing bandwidth in the specified area during the specified future time period based on the priority level.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the controller is further configured to:

receive the advance request for bandwidth in the specified area at the specified future time period.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the advance request for bandwidth relates to a planned event in the specified area during the specified future time period.

12. The system of claim 11 ,

wherein the planned event is specified as part of publicly available information, and

wherein projecting the future bandwidth demand in the specified area is based on the publically available information.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the controller is further configured to:

receive the advance request for bandwidth from a target user of the high-altitude balloon network,

wherein causing the one or more balloons in the high-altitude balloon network to provide bandwidth in the specified area during the specified future time period comprises providing bandwidth to at least the target user in the specified area during the specified future time period.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein causing the one or more balloons in the high-altitude balloon network to provide bandwidth in the specified area during the specified future time period comprises controlling a balloon network density in the high-altitude balloon network substantially over the specified area based at least on the future bandwidth demand.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein controlling the balloon network density comprises increasing the balloon network density over the specified area based at least on the future bandwidth demand.

16. The system of claim 9 , wherein the controller is further configured to:

after the specified time period, cause the one or more balloons to reposition to a previous coverage arrangement.

17. A non-transitory computer readable medium having stored therein instructions executable by one or more processors to cause a controller to perform functions, the functions comprising:

based at least on an advance request for bandwidth in a specified area at a specified future time period having a beginning and a finite duration, projecting a future bandwidth demand in the specified area;

before the specified future time period begins and based on the projected future bandwidth demand, causing one or more balloons in a high-altitude balloon network to move into airspace over the specified area;

determining a priority level related to the future bandwidth demand; and

providing, using the one or more balloons in the high-altitude balloon network, bandwidth in the specified area during the specified future time period, wherein providing bandwidth in the specified area during the specified future time period comprises providing bandwidth in the specified area during the specified future time period based on the priority level.

18. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 17 , wherein providing bandwidth in the specified area during the specified future time period comprises controlling a balloon network density in the high-altitude balloon network substantially over the specified area based at least on the future bandwidth demand.
