Abstract

A method for providing a beneficial effect to an oral cavity of a mammal, the method including contacting a plurality of surfaces of the oral cavity with a liquid effective for providing the beneficial effect to the oral cavity and providing reciprocation of the liquid over the plurality of surfaces of the oral cavity under conditions effective to provide the beneficial effect.

Claims (15)

1. A method for providing a beneficial effect to an oral cavity of a mammal, said method comprising the steps of:

providing an application tray comprising a liquid-contacting-chamber defined by front and rear inner walls and a base inner wall extending between and integral with the front and rear inner walls, said front and rear inner walls each including a plurality of openings through which liquid is directed to contact a plurality of surfaces of the oral cavity, and

supplying a controller in association with the application tray;

forcing said liquid, by use of the controller, to be cycled repeatedly back and forth for a period of time over said plurality of surfaces of said oral cavity in the liquid-contacting-chamber under conditions effective to provide said beneficial effect, wherein said step of forcing the liquid to be cycled repeatedly back and forth comprises the steps of alternately: (i) directing the liquid into said chamber through said plurality of openings in said front inner wall and out of said chamber through said plurality of openings in said rear inner wall, and (ii) directing the liquid into said chamber through said plurality of openings in said rear inner wall and out of said chamber through said plurality of openings in said front inner wall.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said step of forcing the liquid to be cycled repeatedly back and forth comprises using at least one pump to alternately: (i) directing the liquid into said chamber through said plurality of openings in said front inner wall and out of said chamber through said plurality of openings in said rear inner wall, and (ii) directing the liquid into said chamber through said plurality of openings in said rear inner wall and out of said chamber through said plurality of openings in said front inner wall.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said beneficial effect is selected from the group consisting of cleaning said surfaces of said oral cavity, ameliorating a detrimental condition within said oral cavity and improving the cosmetic appearance of said oral cavity.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein said detrimental condition is selected from the group consisting of caries, gingivitis, inflammation, symptoms associated with periodontal disease, halitosis, fungal infection and sensitivity of teeth.

5. The method of claim 3 wherein said cosmetic appearance comprises whitening of teeth in said oral cavity.

6. The method of claim 3 wherein said liquid comprises an ingredient selected from the group consisting of a cleansing agent, an antimicrobial agent, a mineralization agent, a surfactant and a whitening agent.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein said ingredient is selected from the group consisting of an alcohol, an essential oil, an abrasive, a peroxide-generating compound and a surfactant.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein said step of forcing the liquid to be cycled repeatedly back and forth is controlled by a logic circuit.

9. The method claim 1 wherein said step of forcing the liquid to be cycled repeatedly back and forth comprises cycling said liquid between at least one reservoir and said application tray.

10. The method claim 2 wherein said step of forcing the liquid to be cycled repeatedly back and forth comprises cycling said liquid between at least one reservoir and said application tray.

11. The method of claim 10 further comprising the step of providing a hand-held device comprising said at least one reservoir and said at least one pump.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein said application tray is a mouthpiece designed to allow the liquid to contact surfaces of the top and bottom teeth of the user when positioned in the oral cavity.
