Abstract

Methods and systems are disclosed to monitor a media device via a universal serial bus (“USB”) port. An example method includes obtaining a voltage output by a UBS port of the media device and determining if the voltage exceeds a threshold. If the voltage exceeds the threshold, the example method includes determining the media device is in an on state. If the voltage does not exceed the threshold, the example method includes determining the media device is in an off state.

Claims (41)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a voltage comparator to:

compare a voltage output value from a media presentation device input port associated with a media presentation device to a threshold; and

a timestamper to:

when the voltage output value satisfies the threshold, credit an audience as exposed to media output from the media presentation device by timestamping operating state data of the media presentation device with an indication of an on-state; and

when the voltage output value does not satisfy the threshold, prevent crediting of the audience as exposed to the media output from the media presentation device by timestamping the operating state data of the media presentation device with an indication of an off-state.

2. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , wherein the timestamper is to transfer the timestamped operating state data to at least one of a meter or a central facility.

3. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , further including a bit rate comparator to measure a traffic flow from the media presentation device.

4. The apparatus as defined in claim 3 , further including a timer in circuit with the bit rate comparator to set a measurement time interval, the bit rate comparator to calculate a bit rate of the traffic flow based on a count of bits of the traffic flow divided by the measurement time interval.

5. The apparatus as defined in claim 4 , wherein the bit rate comparator is to:

identify a data transfer to the media presentation device when a bit rate threshold is satisfied; and

identify an absence of a data transfer to the media presentation device when the bit rate threshold is not satisfied.

6. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 , wherein the media presentation device input port is a universal serial bus (USB) port.

7. The apparatus as defined in claim 6 , wherein the voltage comparator is to measure the voltage output value from power pins of the USB port.

8. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed, cause at least one computing device to, at least:

compare a voltage output value from a media presentation device input port associated with a media presentation device to a threshold;

when the voltage output value satisfies the threshold, credit an audience as exposed to media output from the media presentation device by labeling operating state data of the media presentation device with an indication of a power-on state; and

when the voltage output value does not satisfy the threshold, prevent crediting of the audience as exposed to the media output from the media presentation device by labeling the operating state data of the media presentation device with an indication of a power-off state.

9. The computer-readable medium as defined in claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the at least one computing device to transfer the labeled operating state data to at least one of a meter or a central facility.

10. The computer-readable medium as defined in claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the at least one computing device to measure a traffic flow from the media presentation device.

11. The computer-readable medium as defined in claim 10 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the at least one computing device to:

set a measurement time interval; and

calculate a bit rate of the traffic flow based on a count of bits of the traffic flow divided by the measurement time interval.

12. The computer-readable medium as defined in claim 10 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the at least one computing device to:

identify a data transfer to the media presentation device when a bit rate threshold is satisfied; and

identify an absence of a data transfer to the media presentation device when the bit rate threshold is not satisfied.

13. The computer-readable medium as defined in claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the at least one computing device to retrieve the voltage output value from a universal serial bus (USB) port in circuit with the media presentation device.

14. The computer-readable medium as defined in claim 13 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the at least one computing device to measure the voltage output value from power pins of the USB port.

15. A method to control crediting of a media source device, the method comprising:

comparing, by executing an instruction with a processor, a voltage output value from a media presentation device input port associated with a media presentation device to a threshold;

when the voltage output value satisfies the threshold, credit, by executing an instruction with the processor, an audience as exposed to media output from the media presentation device by labeling operating state data of the media presentation device with an indication of a power-on state; and

when the voltage output value does not satisfy the threshold, prevent crediting, by executing an instruction with the processor, of the audience as exposed to the media output from the media presentation device by labeling the operating state data of the media presentation device with an indication of a power-off state.

16. The method as defined in claim 15 , further including transferring the timestamped operating state data to at least one of a meter or a central facility.

17. The method as defined in claim 15 , further including measuring a traffic flow from the media presentation device.

18. The method as defined in claim 17 , further including:

setting a measurement time interval; and

calculating a bit rate of the traffic flow based on a count of bits of the traffic flow divided by the measurement time interval.

19. The method as defined in claim 15 , further including:

identifying a data transfer to the media presentation device when a bit rate threshold is satisfied; and

identifying an absence of a data transfer to the media presentation device when the bit rate threshold is not satisfied.

20. The method as defined in claim 15 , further including retrieving the voltage output value from a universal serial bus (USB) port in circuit with the media presentation device.
