GOLF CLUB HEADS AND METHODS TO MANUFACTURE GOLF CLUB HEADS
Embodiments of golf club heads and methods to manufacture golf club heads are generally described herein. In one example, a golf club head may include a body portion including a first material and having a toe portion, a heel portion, a top portion, a sole portion, a back portion, a front portion having a face portion. The golf club head may also include a third mass portion including a second material and coupled to the body portion, and a plurality of mass portions coupled to the third mass portion. The density of the second material is greater than a density of the first material. The interior cavity may include an elastic polymer material. Other examples and embodiments may be described and claimed.
1 . A golf club head comprising:
a hollow body portion having a toe portion, a heel portion, a front portion, a back portion, a top portion, a sole portion, the hollow body portion partially or entirely filled with a polymer material having a coefficient of restitution (COR) greater than or equal to 0.8 when an initial velocity is greater than or equal to 125 feet per second;
a face portion coupled to the body portion;
a first set of mass portions coupled to the body portion and associated with a first total mass; and
a second set of mass portions coupled to the body portion and associated with a second total mass,
wherein the first total mass is less than or equal to the second total mass, and
wherein the second set of mass portions is located below a horizontal midplane of the golf club head.
2 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the hollow body portion includes a port configured to receive the polymer material.
3 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the face portion has a COR, and wherein the COR of the polymer material and the COR of the face portion are associated with a COR ratio of less than two (2).
4 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the COR of the polymer material is greater than 0.8 and less than or equal to 0.9 when the initial velocity is greater than 125 feet per second.
5 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein the face portion comprises a thickness less than or equal to about 1.9 millimeters (0.075 inch).
6 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , further comprising a bonding portion configured to bond the polymer material to the face portion, wherein a ratio of a thickness of the face portion and a thickness of the bonding portion is greater than or equal to 0.1 and less than or equal to 4.0.
7 . A golf club head as defined in claim 1 , wherein a thickness of the face portion is related to the volume of the polymer material by equation 0.01≦T f /V e ≦0.2, where T f is the thickness of the face portion in units of inches, and V e is the volume of the polymer material in units of in 3 .
8 . A golf club head comprising:
a body portion made of a first material, the body portion having a toe portion, a heel portion, a front portion with a face portion, a back portion, a top portion, a sole portion, and an interior cavity partially or entirely filled with a second material having a coefficient of restitution (COR) greater than or equal to 0.8 when an initial velocity is greater than or equal to 125 feet per second;
a first mass portion coupled to the body portion at a location at or above a horizontal midplane of the golf club head, the first mass portion being associated with a first mass; and
a second mass portion coupled the body portion at a location at or below a horizontal midplane of the golf club head, the second mass portion being associated with a second mass greater than or equal to the first mass;
wherein at least 50% of the second material in the interior cavity is below the horizontal midplane of the golf club head.
9 . A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the body portion includes a port connected to the interior cavity, and wherein the interior cavity is partially or entirely filled with the second material from the port.
10 . A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the face portion has a COR, and wherein the COR of the second material and the COR of the face portion are associated with a COR ratio of less than two (2).
11 . A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the COR of the second material is greater than 0.8 and less than or equal to 0.9 when the initial velocity is greater than 125 feet per second.
12 . A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the face portion comprises a thickness less than or equal to about 1.9 millimeters (0.075 inch).
13 . A golf club head as defined in claim 8 further comprising a bonding portion configured to bond the second material to the face portion, wherein a ratio of a thickness of the face portion and a thickness of the bonding portion is greater than or equal to 0.1 and less than or equal to 4.0.
14 . A golf club head as defined in claim 8 , wherein the interior cavity is associated with an interior cavity volume, and wherein the interior cavity volume is related to a body portion volume by equation 0.2≦V c /V b ≦0.5, where V c is the interior cavity volume in units of in 3 , and V b is the body portion volume in units of in 3 .
15 . A golf club head comprising:
a body portion having a toe portion, a heel portion, a front portion with a face portion, a back portion, a top portion, a sole portion, and an interior cavity partially or entirely filled with a polymer material having a coefficient of restitution (COR) greater than or equal to 0.8 when an initial velocity is greater than or equal to 125 feet per second;
a first set of cylindrical mass portions coupled to the body portion and associated with a first total mass; and
a second set of cylindrical mass portions coupled the body portion and associated with a second total mass;
wherein the first total mass is less than or equal to the second total mass, and
wherein the second set of cylindrical mass portions is located at or below a horizontal midplane of the golf club head.
16 . A golf club head as defined in claim 15 further comprising an epoxy material configured to attach the polymer material and the face portion.
17 . A golf club head as defined in claim 15 , wherein a thickness of the face portion is related to the volume of the polymer material by equation 0.01≦T f /V e ≦0.2, where T f is the thickness of the face portion in units of inches, and V e is the volume of the second material in units of in 3 .
18 . A golf club head as defined in claim 15 , wherein the interior cavity is associated with an interior cavity volume, and wherein the interior cavity volume is related to a body portion volume by equation 0.2≦V c /V b ≦0.5, where V c is the interior cavity volume in units of in 3 , and V b is the body portion volume in units of in 3 .
19 . A golf club head as defined in claim 15 , wherein the COR of the polymer material is greater than 0.8 and less than or equal to 0.9 when the initial velocity is greater than 125 feet per second.
20 . A golf club head as defined in claim 15 , wherein the face portion has a COR, and wherein the COR of the polymer material and the COR of the face portion are associated with a COR ratio of less than two (2).
