Abstract

A modular support system for a vehicle with multi-component support structures that include a pair of side supports, a pair of base supports, and a horizontal support suspended between the pair of side supports. Each side support can include a vertical portion, a base portion extending from the vertical portion and coupled, directly or indirectly, to the base support.

Claims (40)

1. A modular support system for mounting on a bed of a vehicle comprising:

a first side support and a second side support, each side support comprising a vertical portion, a lower base portion extending from the vertical portion, and a center support joiner comprising an internal cavity having a non-circular shape along an end cross-section;

a first bar extension having a first free end and a second free end, said first free end projects into the internal cavity of the center support joiner of the first side support and the second free end having a coupling support mounted thereon;

a second bar extension having a first free end and a second free end, said first free end projects into the internal cavity of the center support joiner of the second side support and the second free end having a coupling support mounted thereon;

a center support directly or indirectly attached to the two coupling supports located on the first and second bar extensions; and

wherein the first and second bar extensions define a lengthwise axis passing through the first and second bar extensions and the center support is located, elevation-wise, above the lengthwise axis.

2. The modular support system of claim 1 , wherein a gap is provided between the two coupling supports, said gap providing a through passage for a third light on a cab of a pickup truck when the modular support system is mounted to the pickup truck.

3. The modular support system of claim 1 , further comprising a barrier attached to the first and second side supports.

4. The modular support system of claim 3 , wherein a width of the barrier is adjustable.

5. The modular support system of claim 3 , wherein the barrier comprises two or more barrier sections.

6. The modular support system of claim 5 , wherein the barrier comprises two side barrier sections each with a slanted edge relative to a horizontal surface and a center barrier section.

7. The module support system of claim 1 , wherein the center support has an airfoil cross-section.

8. The module support system of claim 7 , wherein an angle of the airfoil cross-section is adjustable radially of the lengthwise axis.

9. The module support system of claim 1 , further comprising two extended extruded members for use as base supports, said two extended extruded members each having at least one mounting slot.

10. The module support system of claim 9 , further comprising at least two attachment inserts, said at least two attachment inserts being sized and shaped for coupling into stake bed pockets of a pickup truck.

11. A method of shipping a modular support system of claim 1 , wherein the method comprises packaging the first bar extension, the second bar extension, the center support, and the two center support joiners into one or more shipping boxes and shipped from a first location to a second location.

12. The method of shipping of claim 11 , wherein the first and second bar extensions each comprising a shipping length when shipped in the one or more boxes and an a mounting length when mounted to a vehicle, and wherein the shipping length is longer than the mounting length.

13. The method of shipping of claim 11 , further comprising shipping two base supports inside the one or more shipping boxes, said two base supports are sized and shaped for use with the first side support and the second side support.

14. A modular support system for mounting on a bed of a vehicle comprising:

a first side support and a second side support, each side support comprising a vertical portion, a lower base portion extending from the vertical portion, and a center support joiner extending at an angle to the vertical portion, said center support joiner comprising an internal cavity having a non-circular shape along an end cross-section;

a first bar extension having a first free end and a second free end and a non-circular shape along an end cross-section, said first free end of the first bar extension coupled to the center support joiner of the first side support and the second free end having a coupling support mounted thereon;

a second bar extension having a first free end and a second free end and a non-circular shape along an end cross-section, said first free end of the first bar extension coupled to the center support joiner of the second side support and the second free end having a coupling support mounted thereon;

a center support directly or indirectly attached to the two coupling supports located on the first and second bar extensions; and

wherein a gap is provided between the two coupling supports and the center support is located, elevation-wise, above the gap.

15. The modular support system of claim 14 , wherein the gap is located between an enclosed end wall on the coupling support coupled to the second bar extension and an enclosed end wall on the coupling support coupled to the first bar extension.

16. The modular support system of claim 15 , wherein a third light on a cab of a pickup truck when the modular support system is mounted to the pickup truck is exposed at the gap.

17. The modular support system of claim 14 , further comprising a barrier attached to the first and second side supports.

18. The modular support system of claim 17 , wherein a width of the barrier is adjustable.

19. The module support system of claim 18 , further comprising at least two attachment inserts extending below, elevation-wise, the lower base portions, said at least two attachment inserts being sized and shaped for coupling into stake bed pockets of a pickup truck.

20. The modular support system of claim 17 , wherein the barrier comprises two or more barrier sections.

21. The modular support system of claim 20 , wherein the barrier comprises two side barrier sections each with a slanted edge relative to a horizontal surface and a center barrier section.

22. The module support system of claim 14 , wherein two spaced apart bases extend from the center support and wherein the two spaced apart bases are coupled to the two coupling supports.

23. The module support system of claim 22 , wherein the center support has a airfoil cross-section.

24. A modular support system for mounting on a bed of a vehicle comprising:

a first side support and a second side support, each side support comprising a vertical portion, a lower base portion extending from the vertical portion, and a center support joiner extending at an angle to the vertical portion, said center support joiner comprising an internal cavity having a non-circular shape along an end cross-section;

a first bar extension having a first free end and a second free end and a non-circular shape along an end cross-section, said first free end of the first bar extension coupled to the center support joiner of the first side support and the second free end having a coupling support mounted thereon;

a second bar extension having a first free end and a second free end and a non-circular shape along an end cross-section, said first free end of the first bar extension coupled to the center support joiner of the second side support and the second free end having a coupling support mounted thereon;

a center support having an airfoil shape cross-section and two spaced apart extended base members, the two spaced apart extended base member attached to the two coupling supports located on the first and second bar extensions;

wherein a gap is provided between the two coupling supports and the center support is located, elevation-wise, above the gap; and

wherein an angle of the airfoil relative to a lengthwise axis defined by the first and second bar extensions are adjustable.
