Abstract

The present disclosure provides a vitreous visualization system including a general light source, a general conduit that transmits light from the general light source through a conduit portion of a general illumination optical fiber, and a combined vitreous visualization and general illumination tool that receives light from the general conduit. The combined vitreous visualization tool includes a vitreous visualization light source, a controller for the vitreous visualization light source, a vitreous visualization optical fiber, a tool portion of the general illumination optical fiber, and a probe tip through which at least parts of both the vitreous visualization optical fiber and the tool portion of the general illumination optical fiber pass.

Claims (30)

1. A vitreous visualization system comprising:

a general light source;

a general conduit that transmits light from the general light source through a conduit portion of a general illumination optical fiber, wherein the general illumination optical fiber comprises a tool portion;

a vitreous visualization light source;

a vitreous visualization optical fiber that receives light from the vitreous visualization light source, wherein the vitreous visualization optical fiber comprises a tool portion;

a combined vitreous visualization and general illumination tool that comprises:

a probe tip through which at least parts of both the tool portion of the vitreous visualization optical fiber and the tool portion of the general illumination optical fiber pass; and

a controller communicatively coupled to the combined vitreous visualization and general illumination tool;

wherein the luminous flux of a tip of the tool portion of the vitreous visualization optical fiber is at least five times higher than the luminous flux at a tip of the tool portion of the general illumination optical fiber.

2. The vitreous visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the general conduit comprises:

a cable that includes the conduit portion of the general illumination optical fiber; and

a connector at one end of the cable that may be plugged into the general light source.

3. The vitreous visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the controller turns the vitreous visualization light source on and off.

4. The vitreous visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the controller controls the luminous flux of light for vitreous visualization.

5. The vitreous visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the vitreous visualization light source comprises a laser.

6. The vitreous visualization system of claim 5 , wherein the laser is internal to the combined vitreous visualization and general illumination tool and wherein the tool further comprises an internal power source for the laser.

The vitreous visualization system of claim 5 , wherein the laser is internal to the combined vitreous visualization and general illumination tool and wherein the tool further comprises an additional optical component through which light from the laser passes before entering the vitreous visualization optical fiber.

8. The vitreous visualization system of claim 5 , wherein the laser produces light with a wavelength in the range of 480-530 nanometers.

9. The vitreous visualization system of claim 5 , wherein the laser has a luminous flux of 6 mW or lower.

10. The vitreous visualization system of claim 5 , wherein the controller turns the laser on and off, and a separate additional controller adjusts the luminous flux of the laser.

11. The vitreous visualization system of claim 5 , wherein the controller turns the laser on and off and adjusts the luminous flux of the laser.

12. The vitreous visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the general light source generates white light.

13. The vitreous visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the vitreous visualization optical fiber transmits light into an eye at an angle of illumination A that is less than 45 degrees.

14. The vitreous visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the vitreous visualization optical fiber has a numeric aperture of less than 0.30.

15. The vitreous visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the general illumination optical fiber transmits light into an eye at an angle of illumination C, which is at least 75 degrees.

16. The vitreous visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the general illumination optical fiber has a numeric aperture of 0.50 to 0.63.

17. The vitreous visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the vitreous visualization light source supplies a pulsing light.

18. The vitreous visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the probe tip is 20 gauge or smaller.

19. The vitreous visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is integrated into the combined vitreous visualization and general illumination tool.

20. The vitreous visualization system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is integrated into the general light source or the vitreous visualization light source.
