Abstract

Embodiments of the invention provide methods for maximizing the bandwidth utilization in the uplink of a communication system supporting time division multiplexing between unicast and multicast/broadcast communication modes during transmission time intervals in the downlink of a communication system. This is accomplished by multiplexing at least unicast control signaling for UL scheduling assignments in TTIs supporting the multicast/broadcast communication mode. Moreover, multiplexing of unicast control signaling can also be accomplished by splitting a symbol of the multicast/broadcast TTI into two shorter symbols with the first of these two shorter symbols carrying at least unicast control signaling and the second of these shorter symbols carrying multicast/broadcast signaling.

Claims (30)

1. An apparatus of a Node B (NB), the apparatus comprising:

a transmitter; and

processing circuitry configured to:

configure a cell to have a multicast broadcast area wherein a subset of downlink subframes for the cell are configured as multicast broadcast subframes, each multicast broadcast subframe comprising a first region including a first symbol of the multicast broadcast subframe and a second region including symbols other than the first symbol of the multicast broadcast subframe;

encode multicast broadcast data in the second region of each of the multicast broadcast subframes;

encode a cell specific reference signal in the first region of at least one of the multicast broadcast subframes; and

cause the transmitter to transmit the multicast broadcast subframe to a user equipment (UE) on an orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) signal.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to encode cell specific control signaling in the first region of the at least one multicast broadcast subframe.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the cell-specific control signaling includes scheduling assignments for data signal transmission from the UE.

4. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the cell-specific control signaling provides timing control or power control information for the UE.

5. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to multiplex the cell-specific control signaling in the first region of the at least one multicast broadcast subframe with multicast-broadcast signaling in the first region of other ones of the multicast broadcast subframes.

6. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the processing circuitry is configured to encode the cell-specific reference signal in the first region of a first multicast-broadcast subframe of the multicast-broadcast subframes and to encode the cell-specific control signal in the first region of a second multicast-broadcast subframe of the multicast-broadcast subframes.

7. A system comprising a Node B (NB) including processing circuitry and a transmitter, the NB configured to:

assign transmissions in a cell to provide a multicast broadcast area in the cell wherein a subset of downlink subframes for the cell are configured as multicast broadcast subframes each multicast broadcast subframe comprising a first region including a first symbol of the multicast broadcast subframe and a second region including symbols other than the first symbol of the multicast broadcast subframe;

encode multicast broadcast data in the second regions of each of the multicast broadcast subframes;

encode a cell specific reference signal in the first region of at least one of the multicast broadcast subframes; and

transmit the multicast broadcast subframes on an orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) signal.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the NB is further configured to encode cell specific control signaling in the first region of the at least one multicast broadcast subframe.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the cell-specific control signaling includes scheduling assignments for data signal transmission from the UE.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the cell-specific control signaling provides timing control or power control information for the UE.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the NB is further configured to multiplex the cell-specific control signaling in the first region of the at least one multicast broadcast subframe with multicast-broadcast signaling in the first region of other ones of the multicast-broadcast subframes.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the NB is further configured to encode the cell-specific reference signals in the first region of a first multicast-broadcast subframe of the multicast-broadcast subframes and to encode the cell-specific control signals in the first region of a second multicast-broadcast subframe of the multicast-broadcast subframes.

13. An apparatus of a user equipment (UE), the apparatus comprising:

a receiver

a transmitter; and

processing circuitry configured to:

receive, via the receiver, multicast broadcast subframes, each multicast broadcast subframe comprising a first region including a first symbol of the multicast broadcast subframe and a second region including symbols other than the first symbol of the multicast broadcast subframe;

generate cell-specific channel quality indicator (CQI) information based on cell-specific reference signals in the first region of a first multicast broadcast subframe of the received multicast broadcast subframes; and

adjust at least one of the signal transmission power of the UE or the signal transmission timing of the UE in response to cell-specific timing control or power control information in the first region of a second multicast broadcast subframe of the received multicast broadcast subframes.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the processing circuitry is configured to receive multiple first multicast-broadcast subframes having the cell-specific reference signals in the respective first regions of a first portion of the multiple first multicast-broadcast subframes multiplexed with cell-specific timing control or power control information in the respective first regions of a second portion of the multiple first multicast-broadcast subframes.
