Abstract

A method for determining vehicle insurance costs includes receiving a starting location and a destination location for a trip using a vehicle. One or more routes for the vehicle from the starting location to the destination location are received. A cost of insurance is determined for each of the one or more routes for the trip. The cost of insurance for each of the one or more routes for the trip is displayed. A selected route from the one or more routes is received. Operation of the vehicle for the trip is enabled along the selected route.

adjusting the cost of insurance based on the actual route taken.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying a plurality of segments for the one or more routes; and

determining a cost of trip-segment insurance for each of the plurality of segments of the one or more routes.

debiting a payment card for the actual cost of the trip route insurance.

5. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

monitoring operational aspects of the trip; and

adjusting the cost of trip-segment insurance for one of the plurality of segments of the trip based on one or more of the operational aspects.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

monitoring a speed of the vehicle during one or more of the plurality of segments of the trip; and

adjusting the cost of trip-segment insurance for the one or more of the plurality of segments of the trip based on the speed of the vehicle during the one or more of the plurality of segments of the trip.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising pre-authorizing a payment card of a user for a cost of trip route insurance for the one or the one or more routes that is selected.

8. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

displaying an offer or incentive for a reduced cost of insurance for a selection of a specific route;

after receiving the selected route, determining whether the specific route was selected; and

when a determination is made that the specific route was selected, reducing the cost of insurance for the specific route.

9. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

determining a number of passengers in the vehicle; and

adjusting the cost of insurance based on the type of vehicle and the number of passengers.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein obtaining the personal information regarding the human driver includes age, sex, and driving history of the human driver; and

adjusting the cost of insurance based on the personal information regarding the human driver.

11. The method of claim 6 , wherein determining the cost of insurance comprises:

obtaining information regarding current road conditions along the actual route taken;

obtaining information regarding current traffic conditions along the actual route taken;

obtaining information regarding current weather conditions; and

further adjusting the cost of insurance based upon the current road conditions, the current traffic conditions, and the current weather conditions.

12. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

providing information regarding the actual route taken to one or more third party sources; and

receiving the information regarding the current road conditions, the current traffic conditions, and the current weather conditions from one or more of the one or more third party sources.
