Abstract

A conductive fluid reservoir can be used to dispense conductive fluid to increase electrical connectivity between an electrode of a defibrillator and a patient. The reservoir includes a container that holds the conductive fluid, one or more outlets on the container, and an inflatable pouch located at least partially within the container. The inflatable pouch is capable of being inflated from a deflated state to an inflated state. In the deflated state, a free end of the inflatable pouch covers the one or more outlets. In the inflated state, the free end of the inflatable pouch is removed from the one or more outlets such that the conductive fluid is allowed to flow out of the container via the one or more outlets. Inflating the inflatable pouch causes the conductive fluid to be dispensed from the reservoir.

Claims (62)

1. A system for use with a wearable defibrillator worn by a patient, the system comprising:

an electrode;

a source of pressurized fluid;

a container configured to contain a conductive fluid, the container having an outlet;

an inflatable pouch, at least a portion of the pouch being located within the container, the pouch located within the container such that when the pouch is in a deflated state the pouch covers the outlet, the pouch in the deflated state thus preventing the conductive fluid contained by the container from flowing out of the container through the outlet; and

a controller configured to control selective delivery of the pressurized fluid from the source of pressurized fluid to the inflatable pouch, and in which

the pouch is configured to become inflated from the deflated state responsive to the pressurized fluid being thus delivered from the source of pressurized fluid, and

when the pouch becomes thus inflated, the pouch changes shape such that the pouch no longer covers the outlet and the contained conductive fluid is thus no longer prevented from thus flowing out of the container through the outlet near the electrode.

2. The system of claim 1 , in which the container is flexible or semi-rigid, and

when the pouch is in the deflated state, pressing on the container causes a pressure in the contained conductive fluid, the caused pressure exerted on the portion of the pouch and pushing the portion of the pouch toward the outlet, the caused pressure thus helping prevent the contained conductive fluid from leaking out of the reservoir through the outlet.

3. The system of claim 1 , in which

the pouch includes an inlet that protrudes through the container, and

the pouch is configured to become thus inflated in response to receiving the pressurized fluid through the inlet.

4. The system of claim 1 , in which the pouch has a U-shape.

5. The system of claim 1 , in which the pouch has a ring shape.

6. The system of claim 1 , in which

as the pouch becomes thus inflated, the pouch exerts a force on the contained conductive fluid, the force pushing the contained conductive fluid out of the container via the outlet.

7. The system of claim 1 , in which

while the pouch is in a deflated state, the pouch is sealed to the outlet that the pouch covers, and

the pouch becomes no longer sealed to the outlet responsive to the pouch thus changing shape.

8. The system of claim 7 , in which

the pouch is thus sealed to the outlet by an adhesive.

9. The system of claim 7 , in which

the pouch is thus sealed to the outlet by a heat weld.

10. The system of claim 1 , in which

when the pouch is in the deflated state, the pouch is flat and has a connected end and a free end, the free end having a saw-tooth shape that includes a valley between two peaks, and

the outlet is located closer to the valley than to the peaks.

11. The system of claim 1 , in which the container further has an other outlet,

the contained conductive fluid is initially prevented from flowing out of the container through the other outlet, but

when the pouch becomes thus inflated, the contained conductive fluid is no longer prevented from flowing out of the container through the other outlet near the electrode.

12. A system for use with a wearable device configured to provide external defibrillation and/or external pacing therapy to a patient wearing the device, the system comprising:

an electrode configured to be coupled to the wearable device,

a source of pressurized fluid;

a container containing a conductive fluid, the container having an outlet configured to allow at least a portion of the conductive fluid to flow toward the electrode;

a pouch having at least a portion located within the container such that when the pouch is in a deflated state the pouch covers the outlet preventing the conductive fluid contained by the container from flowing out of the container through the outlet; and

a controller configured to control the source of pressurized fluid to deliver pressurized fluid to inflate the pouch and cause the pouch to change shape such that the outlet is uncovered and at least a portion of the conductive fluid is no longer prevented from flowing out of the container through the outlet.

13. The system of claim 12 , in which the container is flexible or semi-rigid, and

when the pouch is in the deflated state, pressing on the container causes a pressure in the contained conductive fluid that exerts against the portion of the pouch, the caused pressure thus helping prevent the contained conductive fluid from leaking out of the reservoir through the outlet.

14. The system of claim 12 , in which

the pouch includes an inlet that protrudes through the container, and

the pouch is configured to become thus inflated in response to receiving the pressurized fluid through the inlet.

15. The system of claim 12 , in which

as the pouch becomes inflated, the pouch exerts a force on the contained conductive fluid, the force pushing the contained conductive fluid out of the container via the outlet.

16. The system of claim 12 , in which

while the pouch is in the deflated state, the pouch is sealed to the outlet that the pouch covers, and

the pouch becomes no longer sealed to the outlet responsive to the pouch thus changing shape.

17. The system of claim 16 , in which

the pouch is thus sealed to the outlet by an adhesive.

18. The system of claim 16 , in which

the pouch is thus sealed to the outlet by a heat weld.

19. The system of claim 12 , in which

when the pouch is in the deflated state, the pouch has a connected end and a free end, the free end having a saw-tooth shape that includes a valley between two peaks, and

the outlet is located closer to the valley than to the peaks.

20. The system of claim 12 , in which the container further has an other outlet,

the contained conductive fluid is initially prevented from flowing out of the container through the other outlet, but

when the pouch becomes thus inflated, the contained conductive fluid is no longer prevented from flowing out of the container through the other outlet near the electrode.

21. A system for use with a wearable device configured to provide external defibrillation and/or external pacing therapy to a patient wearing the wearable device, the system comprising:

an electrode configured to be coupled to the wearable device;

means for providing pressurized fluid;

container means for containing a conductive fluid, the container means having an outlet for allowing at least a portion of the conductive fluid to flow toward the electrode;

pouch means, having at least a portion located within the container means, for covering an outlet of the container means when the pouch means is in a deflated state and uncovering the outlet when the pouch means is in an inflated state; and

control means for causing the means for providing pressurized fluid to deliver pressurized fluid to inflate the pouch means and enable at least a portion of the conductive fluid to flow out of the container means through the outlet.
