Abstract

This disclosure is directed to methods and systems for delivering an item of web content requested by a client. An intermediary between a client and a server may intercept a request from the client to the server for an item of web content. The intermediary may split the item of web content into a plurality of fragments. The intermediary may identify, responsive to the request, a first fragment of the plurality of fragments to transmit to the client. The intermediary may inject executable code into the first fragment of the plurality of fragments. The executable code may be configured to conditionally incorporate additional fragments from the plurality of fragments into the first fragment at the client.

Claims (29)

1. A system for requesting an item of web content, the system comprising:

one or more hardware processors of a client, configured to execute a browser to:

send a request to a server for an item of web content, the request intercepted by an intermediary between the browser and the server;

render a first fragment of the item of web content obtained from a cache;

conditionally request for a second fragment of the item of web content to be delivered from the intermediary to the client, responsive to detecting a user action on the rendered first fragment, that is to move a predetermined location for the second fragment on the rendered first fragment into a viewport of the client, and

receive the conditionally requested second fragment from the intermediary for rendering at the client.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more hardware processors is further configured to identify, responsive to the request, the first fragment from a plurality of fragments of the item of web content, for rendering on the browser.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the item of web content comprises one of: an HTML page, an image, a cascading style sheet (CSS), a script file, a video object, an audio object, and a Flash file or small web format (SWF) file.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more hardware processors is further configured to obtain the first fragment from a version of the item of web content stored in a cache.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the second fragment comprises a fragment of the item of web content provided by the server in response to the request for the item of web content.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more hardware processors or the browser is configured to conditionally request for the second fragment by sending a message to the server, the message intended to be intercepted by the intermediary.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more hardware processors or the browser is configured to conditionally request the second fragment to be delivered to the client, and to leave at least a third fragment of the item of web content undelivered to the client.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more hardware processors or the browser is configured to conditionally request for a third fragment responsive to at least one of: a network condition, dependencies between related fragments, size of a fragment, importance of a fragment, availability of a fragment, and visibility of a fragment.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more hardware processors or the browser is configured to conditionally request for a third fragment responsive to at least one of: a user event, a timer event and a document object model event, that involves a display or use of the one or more fragments at the client.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more hardware processors or the browser is configured to combine the second fragment with the first fragment for updated rendering at the client.

11. A method for requesting an item of web content, the method comprising:

sending, by a client executing a browser, a request to a server for an item of web content, the request intercepted by an intermediary between the browser and the server;

rendering, on the browser, a first fragment of the item of web content obtained from a cache;

conditionally requesting, by an interactive sequencing engine of the client, for a second fragment of the item of web content to be delivered from the intermediary to the client, responsive to detecting a user action on the rendered first fragment, that is to move a predetermined location for the second fragment on the rendered first fragment into a viewport of the client, and

receiving, by the client from the intermediary, the conditionally requested second fragment for rendering at the client.

12. The method of claim 1 , comprising identifying, responsive to the request, the first fragment from a plurality of fragments of the item of web content, for rendering on the browser.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the item of web content comprises one of: an HTML page, an image, a cascading style sheet (CSS), a script file, a video object, an audio object, and a Flash file or small web format (SWF) file.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising obtaining the first fragment from a version of the item of web content stored in a cache.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second fragment comprises a fragment of the item of web content provided by the server in response to the request for the item of web content.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein conditionally requesting for the second fragment comprises sending a message to the server, the message intended to be intercepted by the intermediary.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein conditionally requesting the second fragment to be delivered to the client comprises leaving at least a third fragment of the item of web content undelivered to the client.

The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining to conditionally request for a third fragment responsive to at least one of: a network condition, dependencies between related fragments, size of a fragment, importance of a fragment, availability of a fragment, and visibility of a fragment.

19. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining to conditionally request for a third fragment responsive to at least one of: a user event, a timer event and a document object model event, that involves a display or use of the one or more fragments at the client.

20. The method of claim 1 , further comprising combining the second fragment with the first fragment for updated rendering at the client.
