Method for assembling a cartridge for a smoking article
The present disclosure relates to systems, apparatuses, and methods for assembling cartridges for aerosol delivery devices. The cartridges may be assembled by transporting carriages between various substations at which parts are added to a base. In another assembly method, the base may be moved between a plurality of robots which direct the base downwardly into contact with components to couple the components therewith. An inspection system may inspect the cartridges at various stages of completion.
1. A method of filling a reservoir substrate for an aerosol delivery device configured for delivering an inhalable substance comprising:
providing a cartridge for the aerosol delivery device, wherein the reservoir substrate is positioned in an outer body of the cartridge and comprises a plurality of discrete angular portions relative to a longitudinal axis extending through the cartridge;
sequentially moving an outlet of a filling device into a position proximate to each of the discrete angular portions of the reservoir substrate; and
activating the filling device when positioned at the discrete angular portions of the reservoir substrate so as to intermittently direct a flow of an aerosol precursor through the outlet of the filling device to at least partially fill the reservoir substrate.
2. The filling method of claim 1 , wherein the outlet of the filling device remains out of contact with the reservoir substrate.
3. The filling method of claim 1 , further comprising transporting the cartridge between a plurality of filling stations, wherein the flow of the aerosol precursor composition is directed to at least one of the discrete angular portions of the reservoir substrate at each of the filling stations.
4. The filling method of claim 3 , wherein the flow of the aerosol precursor composition is directed at each of the discrete angular portions of the reservoir substrate at a first one of the filling stations.
5. The filling method of claim 4 , wherein the flow of the aerosol precursor composition is respectively directed to one of the discrete angular portions of the reservoir substrate at a remainder of the filling stations.
6. The filling method of claim 1 , further comprising controlling an ambient environment in which the reservoir substrate is filled such that the ambient environment defines a relative humidity of less than about 40%.
7. The filling method of claim 4 , wherein sequentially moving the outlet of the filling device into a position proximate to the plurality of discrete angular portions of the reservoir substrate comprises sequentially moving a filling needle in proximity to the plurality of discrete angular portions.
8. The filling method of claim 2 , further comprising pressing the filling device against an inner surface of the outer body when filling each of the discrete angular portions.
