Abstract

This invention provides a polymer that is useful in a variety of applications, including as a binder polymer of a coating composition, and especially a packaging coating composition. Packaging articles (e.g., containers) comprising the polymer and methods of making such packaging articles are also provided.

Claims (49)

26 . A food or beverage can coating composition that includes:

a polyether polymer having a backbone that includes a polycyclic group; and

a carrier liquid;

wherein the coating composition is at least substantially free of bisphenol A and the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and is suitable for use in forming a food-contact coating.

27 . The coating composition of claim 26 , wherein the backbone includes —CH 2 —CH(OH)—CH 2 — segments.

28 . The coating composition of claim 26 , wherein the polyether polymer includes one or more of the following segments of Formula I:

—O—Ar—(R n —Ar) n —O—,  (I)

wherein:

each Ar is independently an aryl or heteroaryl group,

each n is independently 0 or 1,

R, if present, is a divalent organic group, and

the two oxygen atoms are each ether oxygen.

29 . The coating composition of claim 28 , wherein n is 0.

30 . The coating composition of claim 28 , wherein each n is 1 and R includes the polycyclic group.

31 . The coating composition of claim 26 , wherein the polyether polymer has a Tg of at least 30° C.

32 . The coating composition of claim 26 , wherein the polyether polymer has a number average molecular weight of at least 2,000.

33 . The coating composition of claim 26 , wherein the polyether polymer is a reaction product of ingredients including a polyepoxide and a polyhydric phenol.

34 . The coating composition of claim 33 , wherein one or both of the polyepoxide or polyhydric phenol is derived from isosorbide.

35 . The coating composition of claim 26 , wherein the polyether polymer is a reaction product of ingredients including a diepoxide and a dihydric phenol, and wherein one or both of the diepoxide and the diphenol includes a polycyclic group.

36 . The coating composition of claim 26 , wherein the polycyclic group comprises a bicyclic group.

37 . The coating composition of claim 36 , wherein the bicyclic group is a saturated bicyclic group.

38 . The coating composition of claim 36 , wherein the bicyclic group comprises a tricyclic or higher group.

39 . The coating composition of claim 38 , wherein the tricyclic or higher group comprises a tricyclodecane group.

40 . The coating composition of claim 26 , wherein the polycyclic group comprises an isosorbide group.

41 . The coating composition of claim 26 , wherein the coating composition is a water-based system, and wherein the polyether polymer constitutes at least 10 wt-% of the total resin solids in the coating composition.

42 . The coating composition of claim 26 , wherein the coating composition includes a crosslinker.

43 . The coating composition of claim 42 , wherein the crosslinker comprises a phenoplast.

44 . The coating composition of claim 26 , wherein the backbone includes a plurality of polycyclic groups.

45 . The coating composition of claim 44 , wherein the polyether polymer includes one or more pendant hydroxyl groups attached to backbone carbon atoms.

46 . The coating composition of claim 44 , wherein the polyether polymer has a Tg of at least 70° C.

47 . The coating composition of claim 44 , wherein the polyether polymer has a Tg from about 80° C. to about 110° C.

48 . The coating composition of claim 44 , wherein the polyether polymer is a reaction product of ingredients including a diepoxide and a dihydric phenol.

49 . The coating composition of claim 44 , wherein the coating composition is a solvent-based system, and wherein the polyether polymer constitutes at least 30 wt-% of the total resin solids in the coating composition.

50 . A metal food or beverage can or a portion thereof having a food-contact coating formed from the coating composition of claim 26 .

51 . A food or beverage can coating composition that includes:

a polyether polymer formed form ingredients including a diepoxide and a diphenol, wherein the diepoxide is derived from isosorbide; and

a carrier liquid;

wherein the coating composition is at least substantially free of bisphenol A and the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and is suitable for use in forming a food-contact coating.

52 . The coating composition of claim 51 , wherein the polyether polymer has a Tg of at least 70° C.

53 . A metal food or beverage can or a portion thereof having a food-contact coating formed from the coating composition of claim 51 .

54 . A method, including:

applying a coating composition on at least a portion of a surface of a metal substrate prior to, or after, forming the substrate into a food or beverage container or a portion thereof;

wherein the coating composition is at least substantially free of bisphenol A and the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and comprises:

a polyether polymer having a backbone that includes a polycyclic group; and

a carrier liquid.

55 . The method of claim 54 , wherein the polycyclic group comprises a tricyclodecane group.

56 . The method of claim 54 , wherein the polycyclic group comprises an isosorbide group.

57 . The method of claim 54 , wherein the coating composition is applied to the metal substrate after forming the substrate into a food or beverage container or a portion thereof.
