Abstract

Aspects of the present disclosure relate to a multi-fiber fiber optic connector having a connector body, a multi-fiber ferrule supported at a distal end of the connector body, a spring for biasing the multi-fiber ferrule in a distal direction and a spring push retaining the spring and the ferrule within the connector body. The spring push including oppositely positioned spring support shelves that provide spring seating and provide spring stability during side loading.

Claims (23)

1. A method for assembling a multi-fiber optical connector and ribbon assembly, the method comprising:

securing optical fibers of an optical fiber ribbon within a multi-fiber ferrule, the multi-fiber ferrule having a distal end and a proximal end, the optical fibers having end faces accessible at the distal end of the multi-fiber ferrule;

de-ribbonizing a section of the optical fiber ribbon, by decoupling a matrix material from the optical fibers of the section of the optical fiber ribbon; and

loading the multi-fiber ferrule into a connector body of a multi-fiber connector,

wherein the de-ribbonized section of the optical fiber ribbon is positioned outside of the proximal end of the multi-fiber ferrule and at least partially within the connector body after the multi-fiber ferrule is loaded into the connector body.

2. A multi-fiber optical connector and ribbon assembly, comprising:

a connector body having a distal end and a proximal end;

a multi-fiber ferrule having an end face accessible at the distal end of the connector body, the multi-fiber ferrule having a ferrule transverse cross-sectional profile having a major dimension F 1 oriented perpendicular relative to a minor dimension F 2 , the multi-fiber ferrule defining a row of fiber openings for supporting optical fibers, the row of fiber openings extending along the major dimension F 1 ;

a spring for biasing the multi-fiber ferrule in a distal direction relative to the connector body;

a spring push for capturing the spring and the ferrule within the connector body, the spring push comprising:

a distal end;

a proximal end;

latch arms at the distal end for securing the spring push within the proximal end of the connector body; and

a spring seat for supporting the proximal end of the spring;

a connector boot that mounts at the proximal end of the spring push; and

an optical fiber ribbon having optical fibers supported by the multi-fiber ferrule, wherein a section of the optical fiber ribbon within the connector body and/or the spring push at a location outside of a proximal end of the multi-fiber ferrule is de-ribbonized, wherein a matrix material is decoupled from the optical fibers on the de-ribbonized section, and wherein a portion of the optical fiber ribbon extending outside of the connector boot is ribbonized.

3. The multi-fiber optical connector and ribbon assembly of claim 2 , wherein the de-ribbonized section extends at least 10 percent of a length of a multi-fiber connector of the multi-fiber optical connector and ribbon assembly.

4. The multi-fiber optical connector and ribbon assembly of claim 2 , wherein at least a portion of the de-ribbonized section is located within the spring.

5. The multi-fiber optical connector and ribbon assembly of claim 2 , wherein at least a portion of the de-ribbonized section is located within the spring push.

6. The multi-fiber optical connector and ribbon assembly of claim 2 , wherein at least a portion of the de-ribbonized section is located within the connector body.

7. The multi-fiber optical connector and ribbon assembly of claim 2 , wherein at least a portion of the de-ribbonized section is located within the connector boot.

8. The multi-fiber optical connector and ribbon assembly of claim 2 , wherein at least a portion of the de-ribbonized section is located within the connector body, the spring and the spring push.

9. The multi-fiber optical connector and ribbon assembly of claim 2 , wherein at least a portion of the de-ribbonized section is located within the connector body, the connector boot, the spring and the spring push.
