Abstract

System, including methods, apparatus, and kits, for bone fixation using a fixation device including a mounting portion and a fastener that attaches to the mounting portion. In some embodiments, the fixation device may include first and second mounting portions configured to be disposed across a bone from each other and secured with a fastener that extends from one of the mounting portions, through the bone, and to the other mounting portion. The system also may include a tool to facilitate installation of the fixation device.

Claims (25)

1. A system for fixing bone, comprising:

a clip member configured to be positioned on a bone such that the bone extends through the clip member along a through-axis, the clip member including a proximal mounting portion and a distal mounting portion connected to one another with a connecting member, the mounting portions facing one another and defining a pair of aligned apertures configured to receive a same fastener to attach the clip member to the bone, the connecting member being configured to be deformed when the mounting portions are urged toward one another, wherein the connecting member is located at a distance from a plane that is orthogonal to the through-axis, and wherein the connecting member includes at least two bends such that the distance varies along the connecting member as the connecting member extends from the proximal mounting portion to the distal mounting portion, and wherein a first bend is oriented in a different plane than a second bend; and

a spanning portion configured to extend along the bone from the clip member.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a fixation device including the clip member and the spanning portion, wherein the fixation device is configured to be attached to a rib bone.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the pair of aligned apertures includes a first aperture defined by the proximal mounting portion and a second aperture defined by the distal mounting portion, the system further comprising the fastener, which is configured to extend from the first aperture to the second aperture and to lock to the clip member at each of the first aperture and the second aperture.

4. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a tool configured to be attached to the clip member, the tool including a lead screw configured to be turned to urge the mounting portions toward one another such that the connecting member is deformed.

5. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a tool configured to be attached to the clip member and manipulated such that the mounting portions are urged toward one another and the connecting member is deformed, wherein the tool includes a threaded member configured to be manipulated to lock the proximal mounting portion to the tool.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the connecting member is configured to be deformed along a plane parallel to the through-axis when the mounting portions are urged toward one another.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the connecting member is formed integrally with the proximal and distal mounting portions, and wherein the spanning portion is formed integrally with the clip member.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the clip member is a first clip member, the system further comprising a second clip member, wherein the spanning portion is configured to extend from the first clip member to the second clip member.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein a centerline of the connecting member extends from the proximal mounting portion to the distal mounting portion along a nonplanar path.

10. A system for fixing bone, comprising:

a fixation device including a clip member and a spanning portion, the clip member including a proximal mounting portion and a distal mounting portion connected to one another with a connecting member, the mounting portions facing one another and defining a pair of aligned apertures configured to receive a same fastener to attach the clip member to a bone, the spanning portion being configured to extend along the bone from the clip member, and wherein the clip member is a separate component from the spanning portion; and

a tool configured to be attached to the clip member, the tool including a lead screw configured to be turned to urge the mounting portions toward one another such that the connecting member is deformed, the tool further including a retainer configured to align the clip member and the spanning portion when the clip member is attached to the tool,

wherein the clip member includes a first opening defined by the proximal mounting portion and a second opening defined by the distal mounting portion, and wherein the tool includes a first alignment feature configured to be received in the first opening and a second alignment feature configured to be received in the second opening.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the tool includes a threaded member configured to be manipulated to lock the proximal mounting portion to the tool.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the threaded member has an external thread, wherein the proximal mounting portion defines a hole, and wherein the external thread is configured to engage the proximal mounting portion at the hole, to attach the threaded member to the proximal mounting portion.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the tool includes a proximal jaw, a distal jaw, and a gauge configured to measure a distance corresponding to a separation between the proximal and distal jaws.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the clip member is configured to be positioned on a bone such that the bone extends through the clip member along a through-axis, and wherein the tool is configured to permit an orientation of the proximal and distal mounting portions to change relative to one another in a plane that is orthogonal to the through-axis while keeping the aligned apertures aligned with one another, when the tool urges the mounting portions toward one another and the connecting member is deformed.

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the clip member is a first clip member, the system further comprising a second clip member, wherein the spanning portion is configured to extend from the first clip member to the second clip member.

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein the tool is configured to guide placement of the fastener into the pair of aligned apertures while the proximal and distal mounting portions remain clamped to the bone by the tool.

17. A system for bone fixation, comprising:

a clip member configured to be placed on bone and including a proximal mounting portion and a distal mounting portion facing one another and respectively defining a first aperture and a second aperture aligned with one another on a same fastener-receiving axis, the mounting portions being interconnected by one or more elongate connecting members forming a collapsible portion of the clip member that folds at one or more predefined sites along each connecting member as the proximal and distal mounting portions are urged closer to one another while the first and second apertures remain aligned with one another, wherein the one or more elongate connecting members have a height greater than a width, the width being measured in a plane including the fastener-receiving axis and the height being perpendicular to the width; and

a spanning portion configured to extend along the bone from the clip member.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the collapsible portion is configured to fold plastically at the one or more predefined sites.
