Abstract

A vehicle comprising a power train, a drive train, a solar array, a sensor interface, a storage device and a processing device. The sensor interface may be configured to receive sensor data samples during operation of the vehicle. The storage device may be configured to store the sensor data samples over a number of points in time. The processing device may be configured to (i) analyze the sensor data samples stored in the storage device to detect a pattern, (ii) monitor an amount of solar power converted using the solar array, (iii) determine an energy usage for traveling a route based on the pattern and (iv) adjust an amount of power applied to the power train in response to the energy usage for traveling the route. The amount of power applied to the power train may be adjusted in response to the amount of solar power.

Claims (28)

1. A vehicle comprising:

a power train;

an on-board solar array;

a sensor interface configured to receive sensor data samples during operation of said vehicle;

a storage device configured to store said sensor data samples over a number of points in time; and

a processing device configured to (i) analyze said sensor data samples stored in said storage device to detect a historical pattern of said vehicle, (ii) monitor an amount of electrical power output by said on-board solar array, (iii) predict an energy usage for traveling a route based on said historical pattern and (iv) control said power train to ensure said vehicle has sufficient power to travel said route;

wherein said processing device predicts an amount of power output by said on-board solar array throughout said route based on predicted weather, geographic location and a time of day.

2. The vehicle according to claim 1 , wherein the power train comprises a battery configured to store said electrical power output by said on-board solar array.

3. The vehicle according to claim 2 , wherein said processing device is further configured to monitor an amount of energy stored within said battery.

4. The vehicle according to claim 3 , wherein said processing device is further configured to prevent a complete drain of said battery.

5. The vehicle according to claim 2 , wherein said battery is further configured to store power received from one or more of: an electric grid, a hydrogen fuel cell, regenerative braking and an internal combustion engine.

6. The vehicle according to claim 1 , wherein (i) said route comprises a plurality of route segments and (ii) said energy usage is at least partially based on conditions predicted to be present at a time when said vehicle is predicted to reach each of said plurality of route segments.

7. The vehicle according to claim 6 , further comprising a communication interface, wherein said communication interface is configured to (i) communicate current conditions associated with said route segments to a remote database and (ii) said remote database is configured to store said current conditions associated with said route segments with previously stored conditions associated with said route segments.

8. The vehicle according to claim 6 , wherein said energy usage to travel said route is updated as said conditions of said route segments change.

9. The vehicle according to claim 6 , wherein (i) said route segments are received from a telemetry service and (ii) said telemetry service comprises at least one of (a) a map service and (b) a traffic service.

10. The vehicle according to claim 6 , wherein said conditions comprise at least one of: drag, wind resistance, tire resistance, traffic patterns, an amount of light energy, a position of the sun, an elevation of said vehicle, a grade of a road, a location of stoplights, a timing of stoplights, weather, a wind direction, a wind velocity, a temperature, air pressure, moisture, visibility, an amount of vibration, a fuel supply, a condition of tires of said vehicle, a condition of a motor of said vehicle, a condition of said power train of said vehicle, and traction.

11. The vehicle according to claim 6 , wherein said conditions are determined by deriving inferences from said sensor data samples.

12. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the processing device is further configured to predict an amount of light energy available to the solar array along the route.

13. The vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the processing device is configured to predict the amount of light energy available to the solar array along the route based on a present angle of the sun and a predicted angle of the sun for upcoming route segments.

14. The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the processing device is further configured to adjust a speed of the vehicle to maximize an amount of light energy received by the solar array along the route.

15. The vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising one or more optical sensors configured to determine an intensity of sunlight.

16. A vehicle comprising:

a power train;

an on-board solar array;

a sensor interface configured to receive sensor data samples during operation of said vehicle;

a storage device configured to store said sensor data samples over a number of points in time; and

a processing device configured to (i) analyze said sensor data samples stored in said storage device to detect a historical pattern of said vehicle, (ii) predict an amount of light energy available to the solar array along a route; (iii) monitor an amount of electrical power output by said on-board solar array, (iv) predict an energy usage for traveling the route based on said historical pattern and (v) control said power train to ensure said vehicle has sufficient power to travel said route.

17. The vehicle according to claim 16 , wherein the processing device predicts the amount of light energy available to the solar array along the route based on predicted weather, geographic location, and a time of day.
