Abstract

The disclosed technology includes systems, methods, and mechanism configurations related to satellite solar panels, including stowing arrangements, deployment sequences, special purpose hinges, hold down and release mechanisms, and associated components for controlled deployment of the satellite solar panels.

Claims (25)

1. A hinge assembly configured to rotatingly join an inboard panel with an outboard panel of a deployable satellite solar array, the hinge assembly comprising:

a first rotor having a pin portion, a rotor endstop portion, and a first rotor body portion, wherein the first rotor body portion is configured to attach to the outboard panel;

a first bushing having an inner surface configured to rotatingly engage with an outer surface of the pin portion of the first rotor;

a stator having a first bore, a stator endstop portion, a stator body portion, and a second bore, wherein an inner surface of the first bore is configured to engage with an outer surface of the first bushing, wherein the stator endstop portion is configured to restrict a relative rotation between the inboard and outboard panel when engaged with the rotor endstop portion, and wherein the stator body portion is configured to attach to the inboard panel;

a second bushing having an outer surface configured to engage with an inner surface of the second bore of the stator;

a second rotor having a second rotor pin portion, a spring retention portion and a second rotor body portion, wherein an outer surface of the second rotor pin portion is configured to rotatingly engage with an inner surface of the second bushing, and wherein the second rotor body portion is configured to attach to the outboard panel; and

a spring having a coiled portion, a first spring end, and a second spring end, wherein the coiled portion is configured to surround the spring retention portion of the second rotor, wherein the first spring end is configured to engage with the stator, and wherein the second spring end is configured to engage with the second rotor.

2. The hinge assembly of claim 1 , wherein the outboard panel is configured to engage with the bushing to act as a rotating pin with rotational range constrained by the mechanical end stop.

3. The hinge assembly of claim 1 , wherein the inboard panel comprises a body portion of the satellite.

4. The hinge assembly of claim 1 , wherein the first and second bushings comprise hollow cylinders.

5. The hinge assembly of claim 1 , wherein the stator includes a first recess for constraining the first spring leg.

6. The hinge assembly of claim 5 , wherein the first recess constrains the first spring leg between the stator and the inboard panel.

7. The hinge assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second rotor includes a second recess for constraining the second spring leg.

8. The hinge assembly of claim 7 , wherein the second recess constrains the second spring leg between the second rotor and the outboard panel.

9. The hinge assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second bushing includes a flange configured to rotatingly engage with a portion of the spring.

10. The hinge assembly of claim 1 , wherein the inner surface of the first bore is configured to rotatingly engage with the outer surface of the first bushing.

11. The hinge assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second bushing outer surface is configured to rotatingly engage with the inner surface of the second bore of the stator.

12. The hinge assembly of claim 1 , wherein the spring is configured to provide stored energy and actuation force to rotate the outboard panel with respect to the inboard panel.

13. The hinge assembly of claim 1 , wherein the spring is configured to retain a relative rotation of the outboard panel with respect to the inboard panel in a deployed position when the rotor endstop portion engages with the stator endstop portion.

14. The hinge assembly of claim 1 , wherein the rotor endstop portion is configured to allow a rotation range between the inboard panel and the outboard panel of about 0 to about 135 degrees before engaging with the stator endstop portion.

15. The hinge assembly of claim 14 , wherein the inboard panel comprises a portion of the satellite body.

16. The hinge assembly of claim 1 , wherein the rotor endstop portion is configured to allow a rotation range between the inboard panel and the outboard panel of about 0 to about 180 degrees before engaging with the stator endstop portion.

17. The hinge assembly of claim 1 , wherein the hinge assembly is configured to fit within a defined volume along respective edges of the inboard and outboard panels without intruding onto a volume defined by the associated panels or adjacent hinges.

18. The hinge assembly of claim 1 , wherein low-profile screws fasten the stator to the inboard panel.

19. The hinge assembly of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first and second bushings are configured to impart rotational resistance to the respective first and second rotors.
