Abstract

A system and method for customizing mobile-form applications via a web-based interface for distribution to a mobile device are disclosed. An example method includes providing a customizable mobile-form application template. A web-based interface is provided allowing creation of a customized mobile-form application from the customizable mobile-form application template by selecting a data field for inclusion on the customizable mobile-form application template. The customized mobile-form application may then be distributed to the mobile device.

Claims (31)

1. A method of customizing a mobile-form application to manage the sharing of data between a plurality of mobile devices, the method comprising:

selecting by a user, a mobile-form application template from a plurality of mobile-form application templates stored in a server;

customizing by the user one or more elements of said selected mobile-form application template to create a customized mobile-form application, wherein the step of customizing includes using wizards and a set of form controls that can be dragged and dropped or defined on a single or multiple form view;

distributing by the server said customized mobile-form application to a plurality of mobile devices via a gateway to collect and display a plurality of data; and

routing said data to the plurality of mobile devices based on one or more policies and user access permissions that determine in what sequence forms data is shared and updated based, in part, on network conditions;

wherein one of the set of form controls comprises a list of values, the list of values stored on the server, the gateway updating the list of values on the plurality of mobile devices opportunistically based on the available network bandwidth and the size of the list.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said policies comprise an update function selecting the data to update by differencing at byte-level.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said devices include mobile devices and storage devices, and data on the mobile devices is synchronized via the gateway with data on the storage devices.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said mobile-form application includes at least one data field having an associated label corresponding to at least one of said elements, and said customizing includes specifying one of said labels in order to assist data collection corresponding to one of said elements.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said customizing includes specifying a default value associated with an element.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said customizing includes specifying whether data entry in an element is mandatory.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein said customizing includes choosing a specific type of data format for an element.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein said customizing includes an option of adding a logo, an image or a custom graphic or a combination thereof to the customized mobile-form application.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein said customizing includes specifying the order in which elements are displayed to the user for data collection on the customized mobile-form application.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein said customizing includes associating a mobile-device-specific functionality with an element for data collection in the customized mobile-form application.

11. A system for customizing a mobile-form application to manage the sharing of data between a plurality of mobile devices, the system comprising:

a mobile-form application template selected from a plurality of mobile-form application templates stored in a server;

said selected mobile-form application template being customized by a user using a computing device to create a customized mobile-form application, including using wizards and a set of form controls that can be dragged and dropped or defined on a single or multiple form view;

said customized mobile-form application being distributed by the server to a plurality of mobile devices via a gateway to collect and display a plurality of data; and

said data being routed to the plurality of mobile devices based on one or more policies and user access permissions that determine in what sequence forms data is shared and updated based, in part, on network conditions;

wherein one of the set of form controls comprises a list of values, the list of values stored on the server, the gateway updating the list of values on the plurality of mobile devices opportunistically based on the available network bandwidth and the size of the list.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein said policies comprise an update function selecting the data to update by differencing at byte-level.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein said devices include mobile devices and storage devices, and data on the mobile devices is synchronized via the gateway with data on the storage devices.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein said mobile-form application includes at least one data field having an associated label corresponding to at least one of said elements, and said customized mobile-form application specifies one of said labels in order to assist data collection corresponding to one of said elements.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein said customized mobile-form application includes a default value associated with an element.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein said customized mobile-form application indicates whether data entry in an element is mandatory.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein said customized mobile-form application further includes a specific type of data format for an element.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein said customized mobile-form application further includes an option of adding a logo, an image or a custom graphic or a combination thereof to the customized mobile-form application.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein said customized mobile-form application identifies the order in which elements are displayed to the user for data collection on the customized mobile-form application.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein said update function comprises data compression.

21. The system of claim 11 , wherein said network conditions are selected from the group consisting of: a type of network connection and network availability.
