Abstract

An active stylus is capacitively coupled to a capacitive touch panel for communication. The active stylus operates in a wait mode to receive initial communications from the panel. In response to such receipt, the active stylus synchronizes to a repeating communications frame implementing time division multiplexing. Communications from the active stylus to the panel include: information communications; synchronization communications and communications specific for columns and/or rows of the panel. Communications from the panel to the active stylus may be addressed uniquely to the stylus or commonly to a group of styluses.

Claims (90)

1. A method, comprising:

sending, through a capacitive touch panel including a plurality of columns and a plurality of rows, a stylus wake-up signal;

receiving, by a plurality of active styluses capacitively coupled to the capacitive touch panel, said stylus wake-up signal, wherein the stylus wake-up signal includes stylus identification information specifying a group of styluses less than all styluses of said plurality of active styluses;

synchronizing by active styluses of said plurality of active styluses to the capacitive touch panel in response to receipt of said stylus wake-up signal, wherein synchronizing is performed only by active styluses included within said group of styluses having stylus identifications which match the stylus identification information within the stylus wake-up signal;

sending, by each synchronized active stylus of said plurality of active styluses, a synchronization signal to the capacitive touch panel;

receiving by the capacitive touch panel of a first synchronization signal from a first synchronized active stylus of said plurality of active styluses;

determining certain columns less than all of the plurality of columns and certain rows less than all of the plurality of rows that are associated with a location of the first synchronized active stylus relative to the capacitive touch panel; and

restricting scanning of the plurality of columns and the plurality of rows by the capacitive touch panel to only said certain columns and certain rows so as to restrict communications to the first synchronized active stylus and not to other synchronized active styluses of said plurality of active styluses.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the synchronization signal sent by each synchronized active stylus of said plurality of active styluses includes a stylus identification which uniquely identifies the synchronized active stylus.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising sending, through the capacitive touch panel, a panel communications signal which includes the stylus identification of the first synchronized active stylus.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising bi-directionally communicating between the capacitive touch panel and the first synchronized active stylus.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein bi-directionally communicating comprises communicating using phase shift key (PSK) modulation of a carrier signal.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising configuring the capacitive touch panel to operate in a self-capacitance mode of operation for receiving communications from the first synchronized active stylus.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

sending by said first synchronized active stylus a stylus column signal communicating a first data set to be received by the capacitive touch panel on the certain columns; and

sending by said first synchronized active stylus a stylus row signal communicating a second data set to be received by the capacitive touch panel on the certain rows.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

operating the capacitive touch panel to scan the certain columns during first synchronized active stylus transmission of the stylus column signal; and

operating the capacitive touch panel to scan the certain rows during first synchronized active stylus transmission of the stylus row signal.

9. A method, comprising:

sending, through a capacitive touch panel including a plurality of columns and a plurality of rows, a stylus wake-up signal to a plurality of active styluses capacitively coupled to the capacitive touch panel, wherein the stylus wake-up signal includes stylus identification information specifying a group of styluses less than all styluses of said plurality of active styluses;

receiving by the capacitive touch panel of a plurality of synchronization signals from said plurality of active styluses including a first synchronization signal from a first synchronized active stylus of said plurality of active styluses, wherein synchronization signals are received only from synchronized active styluses included within said group of styluses having stylus identifications which match the stylus identification information within the stylus wake-up signal;

determining certain columns less than all of the plurality of columns and certain rows less than all of the plurality of rows that are associated with a location of the first synchronized active stylus relative to the capacitive touch panel; and

restricting scanning of the plurality of columns and the plurality of rows by the capacitive touch panel to only said certain columns and certain rows so as to restrict communications to the first synchronized active stylus and not to other synchronized active styluses of said plurality of active styluses.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the synchronization signals from each synchronized active stylus of said plurality of active styluses includes a stylus identification which uniquely identifies the synchronized active stylus.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising sending, through the capacitive touch panel, a panel communications signal which includes the stylus identification of the first synchronized active stylus.

12. The method of claim 9 , further comprising bi-directionally communicating between the capacitive touch panel and the first synchronized active stylus.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein bi-directionally communicating comprises communicating using phase shift key (PSK) modulation of a carrier signal.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising configuring the capacitive touch panel to operate in a self-capacitance mode of operation for receiving communications from the first synchronized active stylus.

15. The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

receiving by the capacitive touch panel on the certain columns a column signal from said first synchronized active stylus that communicates a first data set; and

receiving by the capacitive touch panel on the certain rows a row signal from said first synchronized active stylus that communicates a second data set.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

operating the capacitive touch panel to scan the certain columns to receive the stylus column signal from the first synchronized active stylus; and

operating the capacitive touch panel to scan the certain rows to receive the stylus row signal from the first synchronized active stylus.

17. A method, comprising:

sending, through a capacitive touch panel including a plurality of columns and a plurality of rows, a stylus wake-up signal, said stylus wake-up signal including stylus identification information specifying a group of styluses less than all styluses of a plurality of active styluses that are capacitively coupled to the capacitive touch panel;

capacitively receiving, by the plurality of active styluses, said stylus wake-up signal;

determining by each stylus of said plurality of active styluses whether a stylus identification unique to that stylus matches said stylus identification information such that the stylus is a member of said group of styluses;

for each stylus that is a member of said group of styluses, synchronizing to the capacitive touch panel; and

sending, by each synchronized active stylus of said plurality of active styluses, a synchronization signal to the capacitive touch panel.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising bi-directionally communicating between the capacitive touch panel and certain ones of the synchronized active styluses of said plurality of active styluses.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein bi-directionally communicating comprises communicating using phase shift key (PSK) modulation of a carrier signal.

20. The method of claim 18 , further comprising sending, through the capacitive touch panel, a panel communications signal which includes a stylus identification of a particular one of the synchronized active styluses of said plurality of active styluses.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein bi-directionally communicating comprises engaging in communication between the capacitive touch panel and only that particular one of the synchronized active styluses of said plurality of active styluses.

22. The method of claim 21 , further comprising:

sending by said particular one of the synchronized active styluses a stylus column signal communicating a first data set to be received by the capacitive touch panel on the columns; and

sending by said particular one of the synchronized active styluses a stylus row signal communicating a second data set to be received by the capacitive touch panel on the rows.

23. The method of claim 22 , further comprising:

operating the capacitive touch panel to scan the columns during transmission of the stylus column signal; and

operating the capacitive touch panel to scan the rows during transmission of the stylus row signal.

24. A method, comprising:

sending, through a capacitive touch panel including a plurality of columns and a plurality of rows, a stylus wake-up signal;

receiving, by a plurality of active styluses capacitively coupled to the capacitive touch panel, said stylus wake-up signal;

synchronizing by active styluses of said plurality of active styluses to the capacitive touch panel in response to receipt of said stylus wake-up signal;

sending, by each synchronized active stylus of said plurality of active styluses, a synchronization signal to the capacitive touch panel;

receiving by the capacitive touch panel of a first synchronization signal from a first synchronized active stylus of said plurality of active styluses;

determining certain columns less than all of the plurality of columns and certain rows less than all of the plurality of rows that are associated with a location of the first synchronized active stylus relative to the capacitive touch panel;

restricting scanning of the plurality of columns and the plurality of rows by the capacitive touch panel to only said certain columns and certain rows so as to restrict communications to the first synchronized active stylus and not to other synchronized active styluses of said plurality of active styluses;

sending by said first synchronized active stylus a stylus column signal communicating a first data set;

receiving the stylus column signal by the capacitive touch panel on the certain columns;

sending by said first synchronized active stylus a stylus row signal communicating a second data set; and

receiving the stylus row signal by the capacitive touch panel on the certain rows.

25. The method of claim 24 , wherein the synchronization signal sent by each synchronized active stylus of said plurality of active styluses includes a stylus identification which uniquely identifies the synchronized active stylus.

26. The method of claim 25 , further comprising sending, through the capacitive touch panel, a panel communications signal which includes the stylus identification of the first synchronized active stylus.

27. The method of claim 24 , wherein the stylus wake-up signal includes stylus identification information specifying a group of styluses less than all styluses of said plurality of active styluses.

28. The method of claim 27 , wherein synchronizing is performed only by active styluses included within said group of styluses having stylus identifications which match the stylus identification information within the stylus wake-up signal.

29. The method of claim 24 , further comprising bi-directionally communicating between the capacitive touch panel and the first synchronized active stylus.

30. The method of claim 29 , wherein bi-directionally communicating comprises communicating using phase shift key (PSK) modulation of a carrier signal.

31. The method of claim 24 , further comprising configuring the capacitive touch panel to operate in a self-capacitance mode of operation for receiving communications from the first synchronized active stylus.

32. The method of claim 24 :

wherein receiving the stylus column signal comprises operating the capacitive touch panel to scan the certain columns during first synchronized active stylus transmission of the stylus column signal; and

wherein receiving the stylus row signal comprises operating the capacitive touch panel to scan the certain rows during first synchronized active stylus transmission of the stylus row signal.

33. A method, comprising:

sending, through a capacitive touch panel including a plurality of columns and a plurality of rows, a stylus wake-up signal to a plurality of active styluses capacitively coupled to the capacitive touch panel;

receiving by the capacitive touch panel of a plurality of synchronization signals from said plurality of active styluses including a first synchronization signal from a first synchronized active stylus of said plurality of active styluses;

determining certain columns less than all of the plurality of columns and certain rows less than all of the plurality of rows that are associated with a location of the first synchronized active stylus relative to the capacitive touch panel;

restricting scanning of the plurality of columns and the plurality of rows by the capacitive touch panel to only said certain columns and certain rows so as to restrict communications to the first synchronized active stylus and not to other synchronized active styluses of said plurality of active styluses;

receiving by the capacitive touch panel on the certain columns a column signal from said first synchronized active stylus that communicates a first data set; and

receiving by the capacitive touch panel on the certain rows a row signal from said first synchronized active stylus that communicates a second data set.

34. The method of claim 33 , wherein the synchronization signals from each synchronized active stylus of said plurality of active styluses includes a stylus identification which uniquely identifies the synchronized active stylus.

35. The method of claim 34 , further comprising sending, through the capacitive touch panel, a panel communications signal which includes the stylus identification of the first synchronized active stylus.

36. The method of claim 33 , wherein the stylus wake-up signal includes stylus identification information specifying a group of styluses less than all styluses of said plurality of active styluses.

37. The method of claim 36 , wherein synchronization signals are received only from synchronized active styluses included within said group of styluses having stylus identifications which match the stylus identification information within the stylus wake-up signal.

38. The method of claim 33 , further comprising bi-directionally communicating between the capacitive touch panel and the first synchronized active stylus.

39. The method of claim 38 , wherein bi-directionally communicating comprises communicating using phase shift key (PSK) modulation of a carrier signal.

40. The method of claim 33 , further comprising configuring the capacitive touch panel to operate in a self-capacitance mode of operation for receiving communications from the first synchronized active stylus.

41. The method of claim 33 :

wherein receiving the stylus column signal comprises operating the capacitive touch panel to scan the certain columns to receive the stylus column signal from the first synchronized active stylus; and

wherein receiving the stylus row signal comprises operating the capacitive touch panel to scan the certain rows to receive the stylus row signal from the first synchronized active stylus.
