Abstract

A surgical saw blade is described comprising an elongated blade bar having opposed plates. The blade bar has opposed proximal and distal sections, with the proximal section having a feature for releasably holding the blade bar to a powered surgical sagittal saw. The blade bar plates are spaced apart from each other to form a void space and a primary opening into the void space. A blade head of the surgical saw blade has a base disposed in the blade bar distal section opening that is pivotally mounted in the blade bar distal section void space, and a crown integral with the base that extends through and outside of the blade bar distal section primary opening, the crown being formed with teeth, wherein a thickness of the crown is greater than a thickness of the base to allow the insertion of the blade bar into a kerf cut.

Claims (26)

1. A surgical saw blade comprising:

an elongated blade bar having opposed plates, said blade bar having opposed proximal and distal sections, said proximal section having a feature for releasably holding said blade bar to a powered surgical sagittal saw, said blade bar plates being spaced apart from each other so as to form in said blade bar distal section a void space and a primary opening into said void space;

a blade head, said blade head having:

a base disposed in said blade bar distal section void space that is pivotally mounted in said blade bar distal section void space; and

a crown integral with said base that extends through and outside of said blade bar distal section primary opening, said crown being formed with teeth, wherein a thickness of said crown is greater than a thickness of said base to allow the insertion of said blade bar into a kerf cut by said blade head; and

at least one drive rod adapted to pivot said blade head;

wherein:

said blade head base is formed with a through window; and

a support member extends between said blade bar plates through said void space defined by said plates and through said blade head base window.

2. The surgical saw blade of claim 1 , wherein said support member is integrally formed with a first one of said plates and said support member extends to and abuts a second one of said plates.

3. The surgical saw blade of claim 2 , wherein said support member is bonded to said second one of said plates.

4. The surgical saw blade of claim 1 , wherein at least two drive rods are attached to said blade head base and extend proximally from said base.

5. The surgical saw blade of claim 1 , wherein said at least one drive rod extends at least partially through said blade bar.

6. The surgical saw blade of claim 1 , wherein said blade bar is formed so as to have a pivot boss that is integrally formed with said blade bar; and said blade head base is seated over said blade bar pivot boss.

7. The surgical saw blade of claim 1 , wherein:

a pivot boss is welded to one of said plates; and

said blade head base is seated over said blade bar pivot boss.

8. The surgical saw blade of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said blade bar plates is formed with at least one secondary opening separate from said primary opening, said secondary opening configured to open into said void space so that debris can flow out of said void space through said secondary opening.

9. The surgical saw blade of claim 8 , wherein said blade bar plates are each formed to have a plurality of linearly aligned secondary openings.

10. The surgical saw blade of claim 1 , wherein said at least one drive rod consists of a single drive rod that is disposed in said blade bar to pivot said blade head.

11. The surgical saw blade of claim 1 , wherein said proximal end of said at least one drive rod is provided with a through hole for receiving a drive member of the powered surgical sagittal saw.

12. The surgical saw blade of claim 1 , wherein said blade bar is formed with an opening in which said proximal end of said at least one drive rod is seated.

13. The surgical saw blade of claim 1 , wherein said proximal section of said blade bar is formed to have opposed side edges that taper inwardly toward an axis that extends between said distal and proximal sections of said blade bar as they extend toward a proximal end of the proximal section, wherein said distal section of said blade bar has a width less than the largest width of the outwardly tapered side edges.

14. The surgical saw blade of claim 1 , wherein said blade bar feature for releasably holding said blade bar to the powered surgical sagittal saw is an opening for receiving a coupling rod attached to the powered surgical sagittal saw.

15. The surgical saw blade of claim 1 , wherein said support member is triangularly shaped.

16. The surgical saw blade of claim 1 , wherein said at least one drive rod is pivotally connected to said blade head base.
