Devices and methods for wake tuning
Flow modifiers are positioned at one or more discrete points along the underside of a boat hull to generate secondary wakes that interfere with the primary wake generated by the boat hull and result in a desired modified wake useful for various watersports. The flow modifiers are formed integrally with the boat hull or affixed thereto, and can be selectively extendable and retractable relative thereto.
1. A method for tuning a primary wake generated by a boat hull, the method comprising:
generating at least one secondary wake to interfere with at least a portion of a primary wake of the boat hull to achieve a modified wake portion, the modified wake portion presenting an effectively flatter skiing surface to a water skier crossing thereover;
wherein the primary wake includes, in cross section, at least one trough, and generating the at least one secondary wake includes generating a peak thereof in phase with the at least one trough of the primary wake.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the peak of the at least one secondary wake includes positioning at least one flow modifier on the underside of the boat hull.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the at least one secondary wake includes generating a plurality of secondary wakes, each secondary wake having a peak thereof in phase with the at least one trough of the primary wake.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein generating the at least one secondary wake includes positioning at least one flow modifier on the underside of the boat hull.
5. The method of claim 4 , wherein positioning the at least one flow modifier on the underside of the boat hull includes positioning the at least one flow modifier proximate a trailing edge of the underside of the boat hull.
6. The method of claim 4 , wherein positioning the at least one flow modifier on the underside of the boat hull includes integrally forming the at least one flow modifier with the boat hull.
7. The method of claim 4 , wherein positioning the at least one flow modifier on the underside of the boat hull includes affixing the at least one flow modifier to the underside of the boat hull.
8. The method of claim 4 , wherein positioning the at least one flow modifier on the underside of the boat hull includes extending the at least one flow modifier from a retracted position.
9. The method of claim 4 , wherein generating the at least one secondary wake includes generating a plurality of secondary wakes and positioning the at least one flow modifier on the underside of the boat hull includes positioning a plurality of flow modifiers on the underside of the boat hull.
10. The method of claim 9 , wherein positioning the plurality of flow modifiers on the underside of the boat hull includes extending the plurality of flow modifiers from respective retracted positions.
11. The method of claim 10 , wherein extending the plurality of flow modifiers from respective retracted positions includes simultaneously extending the plurality of flow modifiers on a common mounting.
12. A waterskiing method comprising:
using at least one flow modifier on an underside of a boat hull, generating at least one secondary wake to interfere with at least a portion of a primary wake of the boat hull to achieve a modified wake portion, the modified wake portion presenting an effectively flatter skiing surface thereacross; and
towing a water skier across the modified wake portion;
wherein the primary wake includes, in cross section, at least one trough, and generating the at least one secondary wake includes generating a peak thereof in phase with the at least one trough of the primary wake.
13. The method of claim 12 , wherein using the at least one flow modifier includes positioning the at least one flow modifier proximate a trailing edge of the underside of the boat hull.
14. The method of claim 12 , wherein using the at least one flow modifier includes integrally forming the at least one flow modifier with the boat hull.
15. The method of claim 12 , wherein using the at least one flow modifier includes affixing the at least one flow modifier to the underside of the boat hull.
16. The method of claim 12 , wherein using the at least one flow modifier includes extending the at least one flow modifier from a retracted position.
17. The method of claim 12 , wherein using the at least one flow modifier includes using a plurality of flow modifiers to generate a plurality of secondary wakes.
18. The method of claim 17 , wherein using the plurality of flow modifiers includes extending the plurality of flow modifiers from respective retracted positions.
19. The method of claim 18 , wherein extending the plurality of flow modifiers from respective retracted positions includes simultaneously extending the plurality of flow modifiers on a common mounting.
