Abstract

The invention pertains to techniques or processes for managing surgical smoke. In one embodiment a suction apparatus evacuates the surgical smoke. For example, the suction apparatus may be arranged adjacent to an electrocautery electrode, which may generate smoke during operation, for evacuating smoke from a surgical site.

Claims (30)

1. An extendable suction attachment for one handed operation with an electrosurgical pencil having an electrocautery electrode, a handpiece, and at least one switch for activating the electrocautery electrode, the extendable suction attachment comprising:

an extendable suction tube having proximal and distal ends;

a lumen of the extendable suction tube arranged for receiving the electrocautery electrode of the electrosurgical pencil;

an attachment housing supportively coupled with the proximal end of the extendable suction tube, the attachment housing comprising a first interior chamber communicatively coupled to the lumen and configured to allow flow of liquid therethrough received from the distal end of the extendable suction tube and out to a liquid output port,

a smoke intake manifold having a plurality of suction intake ports, a fluid output port in fluid communication with a second interior chamber of the attachment housing, the second interior chamber of the attachment housing being configured to allow smoke received from the fluid output port to flow therethrough and out to a smoke output port;

an isolation member positioned inside the attachment housing and configured to separate the first and second interior chambers;

an extension control slideably coupled with the attachment housing and coupled with the extendable suction tube for controlling extendable movement of the distal end of the extendable suction tube over the electrocautery electrode, the extension control including a first control port to be variably sealed by an operator's finger to variably control suction at the distal end of the extendable suction tube; and

wherein the attachment housing comprises a second control port, and the extension control slideably misaligns the first control port and the second control port to variably seal the first control port to control the suction at the distal end of the extensible suction tube.

2. The extendable suction attachment of claim 1 , further comprising at least one movement limiting slot coupled with the attachment housing to limit movement of the extension control to a first preselected extent wherein the first and second suction control ports are arranged in substantial alignment when the extension control is slideably positioned to the first preselected extent.

3. The extendable suction attachment of claim 2 , wherein the first preselected extent corresponds to a full extension of the distal end of the extendable suction tube.

4. The extendable suction attachment of claim 1 , further comprising at least one movement limiting slot coupled with the attachment housing to limit movement of the extension control to a second preselected extent wherein the first and second suction control ports are arranged in substantial misalignment when the extension control is slideably positioned to the second preselected extent.

5. The extendable suction attachment of claim 4 , wherein the second preselected extent corresponds to a full retraction of the distal end of the extendable suction tube.

6. The extendable suction attachment of claim 1 , further comprising at least one movement limiting slot coupled with the attachment housing to limit movement of the extension control to a first preselected extent wherein the first and second suction control ports are arranged in substantial alignment when the extension control is slideably positioned to the first preselected extent, the at least one movement limiting slot also to limit movement of the extension control to a second preselected extent wherein the first and second suction control ports are arranged in substantial misalignment when the extension control is slideably positioned to the second preselected extent, the first preselected extent corresponding to a extension of the distal end of the extendable suction tube to cover an electrocautery electrode.

7. The extendable suction attachment of claim 1 , further comprising an engagement member for releasably securing the suction apparatus to the surgical instrument.

8. An electrosurgical pencil and suction system comprising:

an electrosurgical pencil having an electrocautery electrode;

an extendable suction attachment for one handed operation with the electrosurgical pencil, a handpiece, and at least one switch for activating the electrocautery electrode, the extendable suction attachment comprising:

an extendable suction tube having proximal and distal ends;

a lumen of the extendable suction tube, wherein the electrocautery electrode of the electrosurgical pencil is received within the lumen of the extendable suction tube;

an attachment housing supportively coupled with the proximal end of the extendable suction tube, the attachment housing comprising a first interior chamber communicatively coupled to the lumen and configured to allow flow of liquid therethrough received from the distal end of the extendable suction tube and out to a liquid output port,

a smoke intake manifold having a plurality of suction intake ports, a fluid output port in fluid communication with a second interior chamber of the attachment housing, the second interior chamber of the attachment housing being configured to allow smoke received from the fluid output port to flow therethrough and out to a smoke output port;

an isolation member positioned inside the attachment housing and configured to separate the first and second interior chambers;

an extension control slideably coupled with the attachment housing and coupled with the extendable suction tube for controlling extendable movement of the distal end of the extendable suction tube over the electrocautery electrode, the extension control including a first control port to be variably sealed by an operator's finger to variably control suction at the distal end of the extendable suction tube; and

wherein the attachment housing comprises a second control port, and the extension control slideably misaligns the first control port and the second control port to variably seal the at least one control port to control the suction at the distal end of the extensible suction tube.

9. The electrosurgical pencil and suction system of claim 8 , further comprising at least one movement limiting slot coupled with the attachment housing to limit movement of the extension control to a first preselected extent wherein the first and second suction control ports are arranged in substantial alignment when the extension control is slideably positioned to the first preselected extent.

10. The electrosurgical pencil and suction system of claim 9 , wherein the first preselected extent corresponds to a full extension of the distal end of the extendable suction tube.

11. The electrosurgical pencil and suction system of claim 8 , further comprising at least one movement limiting slot coupled with the attachment housing to limit movement of the extension control to a second preselected extent wherein the first and second suction control ports are arranged in substantial misalignment when the extension control is slideably positioned to the second preselected extent.

12. The electrosurgical pencil and suction system of claim 11 , wherein the second preselected extent corresponds to a full retraction of the distal end of the extendable suction tube.
