Abstract

A mounting system for supporting a plurality of photovoltaic modules on a sloped support surface, such as a sloped roof, is disclosed herein. The mounting system may include one or more support surface attachment devices, each support surface attachment device configured to attach one or more photovoltaic modules to a support surface; and one or more module coupling devices, each module coupling device configured to couple a plurality of photovoltaic modules to one another.

Claims (24)

1. A coupling device configured to attach one or more photovoltaic modules to one or more other photovoltaic modules, said coupling device comprising:

a lower coupling member including a first ledge extending outwardly from a first side of said lower coupling member, said first ledge having an upper surface and a lower surface, said lower coupling member further including a first lower vertical wall connected to said first ledge and extending downwardly from said lower surface of said first ledge, said first lower vertical wall having an inner surface and an outer surface, said first ledge having a cantilevered ledge portion that extends outwardly beyond said outer surface of said first lower vertical wall; and

an upper coupling member including a first flange portion extending outwardly from a first side of said upper coupling member, said upper coupling member being adjustably connected to said lower coupling member by at least one fastening device;

wherein said one or more photovoltaic modules and said one or more other photovoltaic modules are configured to be clamped between said first ledge of said lower coupling member and said first flange portion of said upper coupling member; and

wherein said at least one fastening device comprises a first fastening device and a second fastening device, said first fastening device being spaced apart from said second fastening device along a length of said coupling device.

2. The coupling device according to claim 1 , wherein said lower coupling member further includes a first upper vertical wall connected to said first ledge and extending upwardly from said upper surface of said first ledge towards said upper coupling member.

3. The coupling device according to claim 1 , wherein said lower coupling member further includes a second ledge extending outwardly from a second side of said lower coupling member.

4. The coupling device according to claim 1 , wherein said upper coupling member further includes a downwardly extending wall connected to said first flange portion.

5. The coupling device according to claim 1 , wherein said upper coupling member further includes a second flange portion extending outwardly from a second side of said upper coupling member.

6. The coupling device according to claim 1 , wherein said at least one of said first fastening device and said second fastening device is in the form of a bolt.

7. The coupling device according to claim 1 , wherein said lower coupling member further includes a second ledge extending outwardly from a second side of said lower coupling member, and wherein said lower coupling member further includes a first aperture for receiving said first fastening device and a second aperture for receiving said second fastening device, said first and second apertures being disposed between said first and second ledges of said lower coupling member, and said first and second apertures being co-planar in said lower coupling member.

8. The coupling device according to claim 1 , wherein said upper coupling member further includes a second flange portion extending outwardly from a second side of said upper coupling member, and wherein said upper coupling member further includes a first aperture for receiving said first fastening device and a second aperture for receiving said second fastening device, said first and second apertures being disposed between said first and second flange portions of said upper coupling member, and said first and second apertures being co-planar in said upper coupling member.

9. The coupling device according to claim 1 , wherein said coupling device is capable of being attached anywhere along a peripheral edge of said one or more photovoltaic modules without requiring a custom profile, said one or more photovoltaic modules having a generally straight side surface extending between a topmost surface and a bottommost surface.

10. The coupling device according to claim 1 , wherein said coupling device is configured to couple a first corner of a first photovoltaic module to a second corner of a second photovoltaic module without spanning an entire length or width of said first and second photovoltaic modules.

11. The coupling device according to claim 2 , wherein at least a portion of said first upper vertical wall is aligned with said first lower vertical wall.

12. The coupling device according to claim 3 , wherein said lower coupling member further includes a second lower vertical wall connected to said second ledge and extending downwardly from a lower surface of said second ledge, said second lower vertical wall having an inner surface and an outer surface, said second ledge extending outwardly beyond said outer surface of said second lower vertical wall.

13. The coupling device according to claim 12 ,

wherein said lower coupling member further includes a second upper vertical wall connected to said second ledge and extending upwardly from an upper surface of said second ledge towards said upper coupling member.

14. The coupling device according to claim 13 , wherein at least a portion of said second upper vertical wall is aligned with said second lower vertical wall.

15. A coupling device configured to attach one or more photovoltaic modules to one or more other photovoltaic modules, said coupling device comprising:

a lower coupling member including a first ledge extending outwardly from a first side of said lower coupling member, said first ledge having an upper surface and a lower surface, said lower coupling member further including a first lower vertical wall connected to said first ledge and extending downwardly from said lower surface of said first ledge, said first lower vertical wall having an inner surface and an outer surface, said first ledge having a cantilevered ledge portion that extends outwardly beyond said outer surface of said first lower vertical wall; and

an upper coupling member including a first flange portion extending outwardly from a first side of said upper coupling member, said upper coupling member being adjustably connected to said lower coupling member by at least one fastening device;

wherein said one or more photovoltaic modules and said one or more other photovoltaic modules are configured to be clamped between said first ledge of said lower coupling member and said first flange portion of said upper coupling member; and

wherein said cantilevered ledge portion of said first ledge has an outward projecting length that is greater than a height of said first lower vertical wall.
