Abstract

A catheter adapted or high density mapping and/or ablation of tissue surface has a distal electrode matrix having a plurality of spines arranged in parallel configuration on which a multitude of electrodes are carried in a grid formation for providing uniformity and predictability in electrode placement on the tissue surface. The matrix can be dragged against the tissue surface upon deflection (and/or release of the deflection) of the catheter. The spines generally maintain their parallel configuration and the multitude of electrodes generally maintain their predetermined relative spacing in the grid formation as the matrix is dragged across the tissue surface in providing very high density mapping signals. The spines may have free distal ends, or distal ends that are joined to form loops for maintaining the spines in parallel configuration.

Claims (20)

1. A catheter comprising:

an elongated catheter body defining a longitudinal axis; and

a generally planar distal electrode assembly distal of the catheter body, the distal electrode assembly comprising a plurality of spines, each spine having at least one electrode, each spine having two proximal linear portions and a U-shaped distal portion connecting the two proximal linear portions, each of the proximal linear portions of each of the spines being configured to extend generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the catheter body and generally parallel to each other proximal spine portion, and each of the U-shaped distal portions of each of the spines being offset from each other U-shaped distal portion.

2. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of spines comprises:

a first outer spine member; and

a second inner spine member, wherein the U-shaped distal portion of the second inner spine member is proximal of the U-shaped distal portion of the first outer spine member.

3. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of spines comprises:

a first spine member; and

a second spine member.

4. The catheter of claim 3 , wherein the first spine member has a greater length than the second spine member.

5. The catheter of claim 4 , wherein the first spine member forms a first loop, and the second spine member forms a second loop, the first loop being larger than the second loop.

6. The catheter of claim 5 , wherein the second loop is inside and surrounded by the first loop.

7. The catheter of claim 3 , wherein each of the proximal linear portions of each of the plurality of spines is separated from each other of the proximal linear portions by a predetermined separation distance.

8. The catheter of claim 7 , wherein the predetermined separation distances between each of the proximal linear portions of the plurality of spines vary.

9. The catheter of claim 7 , wherein the predetermined separation distances between each of the proximal linear portions of the plurality of spines are generally uniform.

10. The catheter of claim 3 , wherein the U-shaped distal portion of the first spine member is offset from the U-shaped distal portion of the second spine member such that the U-shaped distal portion of the first spine member intersects the U-shaped distal portion of the second spine member.

11. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the U-shaped distal portions of the plurality of spines are offset from each other such that adjacent ones of the U-shaped distal portions intersect each other.

12. The catheter of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of spine members spines are fixed to each other at the intersections.

13. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of spines comprises first, second and third spines, wherein the U-shaped distal portions of the first and second spines intersect, the U-shaped distal portions of the first and third spines intersect, and the U-shaped distal portions of the second and third spines intersect.

14. The catheter of claim 13 , wherein the first, second and third spines are fixed to each other at the intersections.
