Abstract

Techniques for bridging communication between multiple networks to facilitate distribution of multicast data are described herein. For example, a node that is able to communicate with its network and an adjacent network may send a subscription message indicating that the node is a member of a multicast group. The subscription message may be forwarded up both networks. The node may then forward, between the networks, data that is destined for members of the multicast group.

Claims (49)

1. A first node of a first network, the first node comprising:

one or more processors; and

memory communicatively coupled to the one or more processors, the memory storing one or more instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

sending, to a second node of the first network and a third node of a second network, a subscription message indicating that the first node is a member of a multicast group, the subscription message being sent via the first network and the second network and directed to a root node of the first network and to a root node of the second network; and

forwarding data between the first network and the second network for the multicast group, the data being destined for members of the multicast group, the forwarding including at least one of:

receiving the data from the second node of the first network and sending the data to the third node of the second network; or

receiving the data from the third node of the second network and sending the data to the second node of the first network.

2. The first node of claim 1 , wherein the forwarding data comprises receiving the data from the second node of the first network and sending the data to the third node of the second network.

3. The first node of claim 1 , wherein the forwarding data comprises receiving the data from the third node of the second network and sending the data to the second node of the first network.

4. The first node of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

receiving, from at least one of the second node or the third node, a message instructing the first node to disable a pruning state of the first node; and

disabling the pruning state of the first node.

5. The first node of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

communicating with the third node of the second network; and

determining that the first node is able to communicate with the third node;

wherein the sending the subscription message is based at least in part on determining that the first node is able to communicate with the third node.

6. The first node of claim 1 , wherein the third node of the second network comprises another member of the multicast group.

7. The first node of claim 1 , wherein the first node comprises a Limited Function Device (LFD).

8. A method implemented at least in part by a first node of a first network, the method comprising:

sending, by the first node and to a second node of the first network and a third node of a second network, a subscription message indicating that the first node is a member of a multicast group, the subscription message being sent via the first network and the second network and directed to a root node of the first network and to a root node of the second network; and

forwarding, by the first node, data between the first network and the second network for the multicast group, the data being destined for members of the multicast group, the forwarding including at least one of:

receiving, by the first node, the data from the second node of the first network and sending the data to the third node of the second network; or

receiving, by the first node, the data from the third node of the second network and sending the data to the second node of the first network.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the forwarding data comprises receiving the data from the second node of the first network and sending the data to the third node of the second network.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the forwarding data comprises receiving the data from the third node of the second network and sending the data to the second node of the first network.

11. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

receiving, from at least one of the second node or the third node, a message instructing the first node to disable a pruning state of the first node; and

disabling the pruning state of the first node.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein the third node of the second network comprises another member of the multicast group.

13. The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

communicating with the third node of the second network; and

determining that the first node is able to communicate with the third node;

wherein the sending the subscription message is based at least in part on the determining that the first node is able to communicate with the third node.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first node comprises a Limited Function Device (LFD).

15. One or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing executable instructions that, when executed by one or more processors of a first node of a first network, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

sending, to a second node of the first network and a third node of a second network, a subscription message indicating that the first node is a member of a multicast group, the subscription message being sent via the first network and the second network and directed to a root node of the first network and a root node of the second network; and

forwarding, by the first node, data between the first network and the second network for the multicast group, the data being destined for members of the multicast group, the forwarding including at least one of:

receiving, by the first node, the data from the second node of the first network and sending the data to the third node of the second network; or

receiving, by the first node, the data from the third node of the second network and sending the data to the second node of the first network.

16. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 15 , wherein the forwarding data comprises receiving the data from the second node of the first network and sending the data to the third node of the second network.

17. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 15 , wherein the forwarding data comprises receiving the data from the third node of the second network and sending the data to the second node of the first network.

18. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise:

receiving, from at least one of the second node or the third node, a message instructing the first node to disable a pruning state of the first node; and

disabling the pruning state of the first node.

19. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise:

communicating with the third node of the second network; and

determining that the first node is able to communicate with the third node;

wherein the sending the subscription message is based at least in part on the determining that the first node is able to communicate with the third node.

20. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 15 , wherein the third node of the second network comprises another member of the multicast group.
