Abstract

One disclosed example provides a head-mounted device configured to control a plurality of light sources of a handheld object and acquire image data comprising a sequence of environmental tracking exposures in which the plurality of light sources are controlled to have a lower integrated intensity and handheld object tracking exposures in which the plurality of light sources are controlled to have a higher integrated intensity. The instructions are further executable to detect, via an environmental tracking exposure, one or more features of the surrounding environment, determine a pose of the head-mounted device based upon the one or more features of the surrounding environment detected, detect via a handheld object tracking exposure the plurality of light sources of the handheld object, determine a pose of the handheld object relative to the head-mounted device based upon the plurality of light sources detected, and output the pose of the handheld object.

Claims (36)

1. A head-mounted device, comprising:

an image sensing system;

a logic device configured to execute instructions; and

a storage device comprising instructions executable by the logic device to control a plurality of light sources of a handheld object;

acquire image data of a surrounding environment, the image data comprising a sequence of tracking exposures, the sequence of tracking exposures comprising a plurality of environmental tracking exposures in which the plurality of light sources are controlled to have a lower integrated intensity and the sequence of tracking exposures also comprising a plurality of handheld object tracking exposures in which the plurality of light sources are controlled to have a higher integrated intensity;

detect, via an environmental tracking exposure of the plurality of environmental tracking exposures, one or more features of the surrounding environment;

determine a pose of the head-mounted device based at least upon the one or more features of the surrounding environment detected;

detect, via a handheld object tracking exposure of the plurality of handheld object tracking exposures, a set of light sources of the handheld object;

determine a pose of the handheld object relative to the head-mounted device based at least upon the set of light sources of the handheld object; and

output the pose of the handheld object determined.

2. The head-mounted device of claim 1 , wherein the image sensing system comprises a stereo camera arrangement.

3. The head-mounted device of claim 1 , wherein the image sensing system comprises one or more visible light camera sensors.

4. The head-mounted device of claim 1 , wherein the instructions are executable to modulate an intensity of the plurality of light sources of the handheld object at a frequency of 90 Hz.

5. The head-mounted device of claim 1 , wherein the instructions are executable to acquire the handheld object tracking exposures at a higher frame rate than the environmental tracking exposures.

6. The head-mounted device of claim 1 , wherein acquiring the environmental tracking exposures comprises one or more of a longer exposure time and a higher gain than acquiring the handheld object tracking exposures.

7. The head-mounted device of claim 1 , wherein the sequence of tracking exposures comprises a ratio of one environmental tracking exposure to two handheld object tracking exposures.

8. The head-mounted device of claim 1 , wherein acquisition of the environmental tracking exposure overlaps with an illumination of the plurality of light sources of the handheld object.

9. The head-mounted device of claim 1 , wherein the instructions are executable to control the plurality of light sources of the handheld object to output one or more light pulse clusters, each light pulse cluster comprising an exposure light pulse and an antiflicker light pulse.

10. The head-mounted device of claim 9 , wherein the instructions are executable to control the plurality of light sources of the handheld object to output a plurality of light pulse clusters centered on a frequency of 90 Hz.

11. On a head-mounted device, a method comprising:

controlling a plurality of light sources of a handheld object;

acquiring image data of a surrounding environment, the image data comprising a sequence of tracking exposures, the sequence of tracking exposures comprising a plurality of environmental tracking exposures in which the plurality of light sources are controlled to have a lower integrated intensity and the sequence of tracking exposures also comprising a plurality of handheld object tracking exposures in which the plurality of light sources are controlled to have a higher integrated intensity;

detecting, via an environmental tracking exposure of the plurality of environmental tracking exposures, one or more features of the surrounding environment;

determining a pose of the head-mounted device based at least upon the one or more features of the surrounding environment detected;

detecting, via a handheld object tracking exposure of the plurality of handheld object tracking exposures, a set of light sources of the handheld object;

determining a pose of the handheld object relative to the head-mounted device based at least upon the set of light sources of the handheld object; and

outputting the pose of the handheld object determined.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein acquiring image data comprises acquiring image data via a stereo camera arrangement.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein acquiring image data comprises acquiring image data via a visible light camera.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein controlling the plurality of light sources of the handheld object comprises modulating an intensity of the plurality of light sources of the handheld object at a frequency of 90 Hz.

15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising acquiring the handheld object tracking exposures at a higher frame rate than the environmental tracking exposures.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein acquiring the environmental tracking exposures comprises utilizing one or more of a longer exposure time and a higher gain than acquiring the handheld object tracking exposures.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the sequence of tracking exposures comprises a ratio of one environmental tracking exposure to two handheld object tracking exposures.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein acquiring the environmental tracking exposure overlaps with illumination of the plurality of light sources of the handheld obj ect.

19. The method of claim 11 , wherein controlling the plurality of light sources comprises controlling the plurality of light sources to output a plurality of light pulse clusters, each light pulse cluster comprising an exposure light pulse and an antiflicker light pulse.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the plurality of light pulse clusters are centered on a frequency of 90Hz.
