Abstract

An electronic transaction verification system for use with transaction tokens such as checks, credit cards, debit cards, and smart cards that gathers and transmits information about the transaction token and biometric data. Customers can be enrolled in the system by receiving customer information that includes at least a biometric datum, associating the received customer information with a transaction instrument issued to the customers and storing the received customer information and the issued transaction instrument information in a database for future reference.

Claims (32)

1. A transaction system for processing transactions comprising:

an electronic verification system at a transaction location of an individual or a merchant's network; and

a central processing system comprising:

one or more information stores of users authorized to use the transaction system;

one or more information stores of token information received from issuing entities authorized to utilize the transaction system; and

a processing system configured to communicate with the one or more information stores of the electronic verification system;

the central processing system configured to utilize a merchant's network to transmit information to and from the electronic verification system to a transaction facilitating entity;

the central processing system configured to send and receive token information received from an issuing entity, the token information representative of a transaction instrument issued to the individual by an issuing entity;

the central processing system configured to access the one or more information stores of users;

the central processing system configured to send and receive information from the electronic verification system;

wherein the central processing system and the electronic verification system are self-contained at the transaction location; and the electronic verification system comprises a biometric data reader configured to obtain biometric data from an individual, wherein the electronic verification system is configured to:

receive the obtained biometric data;

generate a first comparison result by comparing the obtained biometric data with biometric data associated with a biometric information stored in the one or more information stores of users; and

transmit to the central processing system information representing the first comparison result;

wherein the central processing system is configured to:

transmit the first comparison result information and the token information representative of the transaction instrument being processed to the transaction facilitating entity,

receive a second comparison result from the transaction facilitating entity to accept or deny the transaction; and

transmit a decision by a display.

2. The transaction system of claim 1 , wherein the transaction information is one of a check, a debit card, a credit card, a loyalty card, a food stamp, a token, or an account.

3. The transaction system of claim 1 , wherein the token information is representative of one of a check, a debit card, a credit card, a loyalty card, a food stamp, a token, or an account.

4. The transaction system of claim 1 , wherein the biometric information stored is representative of a finger print, a voice print, a retinal scan or a face scan.

5. The transaction system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic verification system is located at the retailer's point of sale.

6. The transaction system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic verification system is at the location of the individual doing an internet transaction.

7. The transaction system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic verification system further comprises a token reading device configured to read or scan, and obtain the transaction instrument information.

8. The transaction system claim 1 , wherein the electronic verification system further comprises a signature scanning device to obtain a signature from the individual.

9. The transaction system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic verification system further comprises an identity document scanning device to obtain identity information of the individual from an identity document.

10. The transaction system of claim 1 , wherein the token information is associated with a financial account and the individual is an account holder.

11. The transaction system of claim 1 , wherein the token information is associated with a financial account and the individual is not an account holder.

12. The transaction system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic verification system is configured to transmit information representing the first comparison result to the central processing system or the token instrument information associated with the transaction being processed to the central processing system by the merchant's network using internet.

13. The transaction system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic verification system is configured to transmit information representing the first comparison result to the central processing system or the token instrument information associated with the transaction being processed to the central processing system by merchant's network using radio frequency.

14. The transaction system of claim 1 , wherein the electronic verification system is configured to transmit the first comparison result and the token information together.

15. The transaction system of claim 1 , wherein the received token information includes a number associated with the transaction instrument issued to the individual.
