Abstract

Provided are compositions comprising an orally-acceptable carrier and an anionic copolymer derived from the polymerization of n-vinyl pyrrolidone (VP) with an anionic monomer compound containing phosphorus. Also provided are uses of such compounds in the oral cavity to inhibit demineralization of a tooth.

Claims (26)

1 . A composition comprising an orally-acceptable carrier and an anionic copolymer derived from the polymerization of n-vinyl pyrrolidone (VP) with an anionic monomer compound containing phosphorus or phosphonate functional groups.

2 . The composition of claim 1 wherein said anionic copolymer is described by Formula I below:

wherein x, y, and z are integers and the ratio of “x” to “y+z” is from about 1:99 to about 99:1;

R 1 is a repeat unit containing an anionic phosphonate or phosphate group; and

R 2 is a repeat unit hydroxyethyl acrylate.

3 . The composition of claim 2 wherein z is zero and R 1 is a repeat unit containing an anionic phosphonate group.

4 . The composition of claim 3 wherein R 1 is derived from a monomer compound selected from the group consisting of vinyl phosphonic acid, vinyl phosphonic acid (VPA), dimethyl vinylphosphonate, allylphosphonic acid, diethyl allylphosphate, diethyl vinylphosphonate, and the like.

5 . The composition of claim 4 wherein R 1 is derived from vinyl phosphonic acid

6 . The composition of claim 2 wherein R 1 is a repeat unit containing an anionic phosphate group.

7 . The composition of claim 6 wherein R 1 is derived from a monomer compound selected from the group consisting of methacryloxyethyl phosphate, Bis(2-methacryloxyethyl) phosphate, allyl phosphate compounds and the like.

8 . The composition of claim 7 wherein R 1 is derived from methacryloxyethyl phosphate.

9 . The composition of claim 6 wherein z is non-zero and R 2 is derived from a monomer selected from the group consisting of HEA, 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate, 4-hydroxybutyl acrylate, 2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate, Hydroxypolyethoxy allyl ether, 3-Phenoxy 2 hydroxy propyl methacrylate, glycerol monomethyacrylate, N-(2-Hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide, and the like.

10 . The composition of claim 8 wherein z is non-zero and R 2 is derived from HEA.

11 . The composition of claim 1 comprising from about 0.01 to about 2% of said anionic copolymer.

12 . The composition of claim 1 further comprising fluoride.

13 . The composition of claim 1 wherein said composition is in a form selected form the group consisting of a mouthwash, mouth rinse, mouth spray, toothpaste, tooth gel, sub-gingival gel, mousse, foam, denture care product, dentifrice, lozenge, concentrate and chewable tablet.

14 . The composition of claim 13 wherein said composition is a mouthwash comprising water, and at least one surfactant selected from the group consisting of anionic, cationic, non-ionic, zwitterionic surfactants and combinations of two or more thereof.

15 . The composition of claim 14 further comprising at least one essential oil selected from the group consisting of menthol, thymol, eucalyptol, methyl salicylate, and combinations of two or more thereof.

16 . The composition of claim 15 further comprising fluoride.

17 . The composition of claim 1 wherein said copolymer has a weight average molecular weight of from about 10,000 to about 1,000,000.

18 . The composition of claim 7 wherein said copolymer has a weight average molecular weight of from about 10,000 to about 1,000,000.

19 . The composition of claim 18 wherein said copolymer has a weight average molecular weight of from about 10,000 to about 500,000.

20 . The composition of claim 9 wherein said copolymer has a weight average molecular weight of from about 10,000 to about 1,000,000.

21 . The composition of claim 20 wherein said copolymer has a weight average molecular weight of from about 10,000 to about 500,000.

22 . A method of inhibiting demineralization of a tooth by contacting a tooth surface with a composition of claim 1 .

23 . A method of inhibiting demineralization of a tooth by contacting a tooth surface with a composition of claim 16 .
