Abstract

A prosthetic heart valve includes at least one sealing member. The sealing member is adapted to conform to any surface irregularities found on the inner surface of the valve annulus, including any calcium deposits formed on the valve leaflets. The sealing member can be self-expanding or non-expanding. When deployed, the sealing member is adapted to create a blood tight seal between the prosthetic heart valve and the inner surface of the valve annulus thereby minimizing and/or eliminating perivalvular leakage at the implantation site.

Claims (23)

1. An expandable heart valve prosthesis for replacing a native aortic valve having an aortic annulus, a Valsalva sinus and at least one coronary ostia at an implantation position, the prosthesis comprising:

an anchoring structure having a generally cylindrical framework that has a radially collapsed configuration for delivery to the implantation position through a catheter or sheath and an expanded configuration configured to support and fix the valve prosthesis at the implantation position, the generally cylindrical framework having a principal axis extending from an inflow portion to an outflow portion, such that in the expanded configuration the inflow portion is adapted to engage and secure the annulus at the implantation position and the outflow portion is adapted to be disposed adjacent the Valsalva sinus;

a plurality of leaflets connected to the anchoring structure and configured to regulate blood flow; and

at least one non-inflatable, outer sealing skirt sutured to and extending circumferentially about at least a portion of the inflow portion that does not impede blood flow into the coronary ostia, the at least one non-inflatable, outer sealing skirt sized and shaped to conform to an inner surface of the native aortic valve annulus to minimize paravalvular leakage,

wherein the anchoring structure does not pass through a side wall of the at least one non-inflatable, outer sealing skirt to secure the anchoring structure to the implantation position and the at least one non-inflatable, outer sealing skirt is formed from a biocompatible polymer.

2. The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the sealing skirt further includes at least one of a viscoelastic material and pericardial tissue.

3. The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the sealing skirt further includes at least one of silicone rubber and latex rubber.

4. The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the sealing skirt does not need to expand in volume to provide the seal.

5. The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the sealing skirt decreases in volume upon expansion of the prosthesis, from an undeployed state to a deployed state.

6. The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the sealing skirt further includes a gel.

7. The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the sealing skirt forms an annular seal between the inner surface of the annulus and the outer surface of the anchoring structure.

8. The prosthesis of claim 1 , wherein the inflow portion is formed of a material capable of exerting a sufficient radial force to maintain a steady state, expanded orifice in relation to calcified, native valve leaflets.

9. An expandable heart valve prosthesis for replacing a native aortic valve having an aortic annulus, a Valsalva sinus and at least one coronary ostia at an implantation position, the prosthesis comprising:

an anchoring structure having a generally cylindrical shape, the anchoring structure having a collapsed configuration wherein the generally cylindrical shape of the anchoring structure is radially collapsed for delivery through a catheter or sheath and an expanded configuration to support and fix the valve prosthesis at the implantation position, the anchoring structure having a principal axis extending from an inflow portion to an outflow portion,

wherein the inflow portion includes a plurality of rows of connected, open cells and is sized and shaped to be positioned at and at least partially below the annulus;

a plurality of leaflets connected to the anchoring structure and configured to regulate blood flow; and

at least one non-inflatable, outer sealing member coupled with sutures about the inflow portion, the sealing member adapted to conform to an inner surface of the native aortic valve annulus and an outer surface of the anchoring structure to minimize paravalvular leakage,

wherein the anchoring structure does not pass through a side wall of the at least one non-inflatable, outer sealing member to fix the valve prosthesis at the implantation position.

10. The prosthesis of claim 9 , wherein the sealing member includes at least one of silicone rubber and latex rubber.

11. The prosthesis of claim 9 , wherein the sealing member does not need to expand in volume to provide the seal.

12. The prosthesis of claim 9 , wherein the sealing member decreases involume upon expansion of the prosthesis, from an undeployed state to a deployed state.

13. The prosthesis of claim 9 , wherein the sealing member comprises a gel.

14. The prosthesis of claim 9 , wherein the sealing member is formed of a biocompatible polymer.
