Abstract

The present invention is directed to a pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and a methanesulfonylalkylnitrile compound, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or solvate thereof. The present invention is also directed to a method for treating inflammation, inflammatory-related disorders, or pain, by administering a methanesulfonylalkylnitrile compound or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or solvate thereof to a subject in need thereof.

Claims (10)

1. A method of reducing or alleviating the symptoms of localized manifestations of inflammation, comprising the steps of:

identifying a subject suffering from inflammation, and

administering to the subject a pharmaceutical composition comprising 5-methanesulfonylpentanenitrile or 7-methanesulfonylheptanenitrile, or a pharmaceutically acceptable solvate thereof, in an amount effective to treat inflammation, wherein said symptoms are characterized by acute or chronic swelling, pain, or redness.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said pharmaceutical composition is administered by local administration or systemic administration.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said pharmaceutical composition is administered by topical administration.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said inflammation is associated with a skeletal or muscular disease or condition selected from the group consisting of: musculoskeletal sprains, musculoskeletal strains, tendinopathy, tendonitis, and temporomandibular joint syndrome.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein said inflammation is associated with joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, or fascia.

6. A method of reducing or alleviating the symptoms of localized manifestations of inflammation, comprising the steps of:

identifying a subject suffering from inflammation or pain, and

administering to the subject a pharmaceutical composition comprising methanesulfonylacetonitrile and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, in an amount effective to treat inflammation, wherein said symptoms are characterized by acute or chronic swelling, pain, or redness.
