Abstract

A fluid treatment apparatus and related methods involving the use of replaceable treatment cartridges that include a treatment media, wherein the treatment cartridge is electrically enhanced to form regions of differing polarity within the cartridge. The treatment cartridge can include a pair of fixed polarity conductors that can be electrically connected to a power source so as to induce regions of differing polarity within the cartridge. The fluid treatment apparatus can be utilized to treat liquids including aqueous solutions as well as gases such as an air supply by exposing the fluid to the regions of differing polarity.

Claims (29)

1. A replaceable cartridge for treating a fluid, comprising:

a housing including an inlet port and an outlet port, said inlet port and outlet port being offset from a housing longitudinal axis, said inlet port and outlet port individually configured to fluidly engage a manifold inlet and a manifold outlet, the housing further including a pair of electrical conductors sealably mounted in a housing end cap, each electrical conductor having an exposed end and a internal end; and

an internal treatment media fluidly sealed within the housing,

wherein the housing is adapted for slidable insertion into a manifold assembly having a rotatable manifold valve such that the housing is physically engaged with the rotatable manifold valve in a first position wherein the inlet port and outlet port are not fluidly engaged with the manifold inlet and manifold outlet,

wherein the housing can be rotated in a plane transverse to the housing longitudinal axis such that the rotatable manifold valve is caused to rotate to a second position relative to the manifold assembly such that the inlet port and the outlet port are directed into radial fluid engagement with the manifold inlet and manifold outlet; and

wherein the housing is adapted such that rotation of the rotatable manifold valve to the second position causes the exposed end of each electrical conductor to electrically engage a corresponding one of a pair of manifold electrical contacts.

2. The replaceable cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the manifold inlet and the manifold outlet are in a recirculation orientation when the rotatable manifold valve is in the first position.

The replaceable cartridge of claim 1 , wherein rotation of the housing such that the rotatable manifold moves from the first position to the second position causes the radial fluid engagement of the inlet port and the outlet port with the manifold inlet and the manifold outlet to be accomplished simultaneously.

The replaceable cartridge of claim 1 , wherein rotation of the housing such that the rotatable manifold moves from the first position to the second position causes the radial fluid engagement of the inlet port and the outlet port with the manifold inlet and the manifold outlet to be accomplished sequentially.

5. The replaceable cartridge of claim 4 , wherein the radial fluid engagement of the outlet port with the manifold outlet occurs prior to the radial fluid engagement of the inlet port with the manifold inlet.

6. The replaceable cartridge of claim 5 , wherein the earlier radial fluid engagement of the outlet port with the manifold inlet vents any internal pressure within the housing.

7. The replaceable cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the housing further comprises a cartridge tab, and wherein said cartridge tab is configured for slidable insertion into a manifold receiver on the manifold assembly.

The replaceable cartridge of claim 1 , wherein the internal end of each electrical conductor extends into the housing such that electrical engagement of the pair of electrical conductors with the pair of manifold electrical contacts generates an electrical field across the internal treatment media.

9. A filter manifold for attachment to an appliance, comprising:

a manifold receiver having an inlet port fluidly connected to a source of untreated fluid and an outlet port fluidly connected to a treated fluid destination, the manifold receiver further including a pair of manifold electrical contacts; and

a rotatable manifold valve attached to the manifold receiver, the rotatable manifold valve configured to slidably engage a cartridge filter in a first position wherein the cartridge filter is not fluidly engaged to the inlet port and the outlet port and wherein the rotatable manifold valve is rotatable to a second position relative to manifold receiver wherein the cartridge filter is fluidly engaged to the inlet port and the outlet port, wherein each of the pair of manifold electrical contacts electrically engage an exposed end on one of a pair of corresponding electrical conductors on the cartridge filter when the rotatable manifold valve is rotated to the second position.

10. The filter manifold of claim 9 , wherein the inlet port and the outlet port are simultaneously fluidly engaged with the cartridge filter when the rotatable manifold valve is rotated to the second position.

11. The filter manifold of claim 9 , wherein the inlet port and the outlet port are sequentially fluidly engaged with the cartridge filter when the rotatable manifold valve is rotated to the second position.

12. The filter manifold of claim 9 , wherein the inlet port and the outlet port are in a fluid recirculation mode when the rotatable manifold valve is in the first position.

13. A fluid treatment system comprising:

a replaceable treatment cartridge having a housing defining a housing inlet and a housing outlet, the housing enclosing an internal treatment media, the housing further including a pair of electrical conductors sealably mounted in a housing end cap, each electrical conductor having an exposed end and a internal end; and

a manifold assembly having a manifold inlet fluidly connected to an untreated fluid source and a manifold outlet fluidly connected to a point of use, the manifold assembly including a rotatable manifold valve that is rotatable between a first position and a second position, the manifold assembly further including a pair of manifold electrical contacts,

wherein the replaceable treatment cartridge is slidably engageable with the rotatable manifold valve when the rotatable manifold valve is in the first position, said replaceable treatment cartridge being fluidly disengaged from the manifold assembly when the rotatable manifold valve is in the first position,

wherein the housing inlet and the housing outlet are fluid engaged with the manifold inlet and the manifold outlet when the rotatable manifold valve is rotated to the second position, and

wherein the housing is adapted such that rotation of the rotatable manifold valve to the second position causes the exposed end of each electrical conductor to electrically engage a corresponding one of the pair of manifold electrical contacts.

14. The fluid treatment system of claim 13 , wherein the housing inlet and the housing outlet are simultaneously fluidly engaged with the manifold inlet and the manifold outlet when the rotatable manifold valve is rotated to the second position.

15. The fluid treatment system of claim 13 , wherein the housing inlet and the housing outlet are sequentially fluidly engaged with the manifold inlet and the manifold outlet when the rotatable manifold valve is rotated to the second position.

16. The fluid treatment system of claim 13 , wherein the manifold inlet and manifold outlet are fluidly engaged in recirculation mode when the rotatable manifold valve is in the first position.

17. The replaceable cartridge of claim 13 , wherein the internal end of each electrical conductor extends into the housing such that electrical engagement of the pair of electrical conductors with the pair of manifold electrical contacts generates an electrical field across the internal treatment media.
