Abstract

A method and apparatus for operation by a base station are provided. The base station may be configured to receive a request for attachment from a WTRU and transmit and receive authentication messages between the WTRU and a cellular core network including an HLR. A registration request may be received from the WTRU via SIP, the registration request indicating a capability of the WTRU to receive SMS messages via an IMS. In accordance with the capability of the WTRU, at least one message comprising SMS data may be transmitted, to the WTRU, via the IMS using SIP. The capability of the WTRU may be recorded by the HLR and the SMS data may be ciphered prior to transmission to the WTRU.

Claims (36)

1. A base station configured to:

receive a request for attachment from a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU);

transmit and receive authentication messages between the WTRU and a cellular core network node, wherein the cellular core network includes a home location register (HLR);

receive a registration request from the WTRU via session initiation protocol (SIP), wherein the registration request indicates a capability of the WTRU to receive Short Message Service (SMS) messages via an Internet Protocol multimedia subsystem (IMS); and

transmit, in accordance with the capability of the WTRU, at least one message comprising SMS data, to the WTRU, via the IMS via SIP;

wherein the SMS data is ciphered prior to transmission to the WTRU.

2. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the base station is a wireless local area network (WLAN) base station.

3. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the at least one message comprising SMS data is a multimedia message service (MMS) message.

4. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the at least one message comprising SMS data is an instant message service message.

5. The base station of claim 1 , wherein an indication of capability of the WTRU is provided to a short message Internet protocol gateway (SM-IP-GW).

6. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the SMS data is received by the base station from the cellular core network.

7. The base station of claim 1 , wherein the SMS data is received by the base station from the cellular core network.

8. A method performed by a base station, the method comprising:

receiving a request for attachment from a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU);

transmitting and receiving authentication messages between the WTRU and a cellular core network node, wherein the cellular core network includes a home location register (HLR);

receiving a registration request from the WTRU via session initiation protocol (SIP), wherein the registration request indicates a capability of the WTRU to receive Short Message Service (SMS) messages via an Internet Protocol multimedia subsystem (IMS); and

transmitting, in accordance with the capability of the WTRU, at least one message comprising SMS data, to the WTRU, via the IMS via SIP;

wherein the SMS data is ciphered prior to transmission to the WTRU.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the base station is a wireless local area network (WLAN) base station.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the at least one message comprising SMS data is a multimedia message service (MMS) message.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the at least one message comprising SMS data is an instant message service message.

12. The method of claim 8 , wherein an indication of capability of the WTRU is provided to a short message Internet protocol gateway (SM-IP-GW).

13. A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) configured to:

transmit, to a base station, a request for attachment;

authenticate with a cellular core network node of a cellular core network via the base station, wherein the cellular core network includes a home location register (HLR);

transmit a registration request to the base station via session initiation protocol (SIP), wherein the registration request indicates a capability of the WTRU to receive Short Message Service (SMS) messages via an Internet Protocol multimedia subsystem (IMS); and

receive, in accordance with the capability of the WTRU, at least one message comprising SMS data, from the base station, via the IMS using SIP;

wherein the SMS data is ciphered prior to reception by the WTRU.

14. The WTRU of claim 13 , wherein the base station is a wireless local area network (WLAN) base station.

15. The WTRU of claim 13 , wherein the at least one message comprising SMS data is a multimedia message service (MMS) message.

16. The WTRU of claim 13 , wherein the at least one message comprising SMS data is an instant message service message.

17. The WTRU of claim 13 , wherein an indication of capability of the WTRU is provided to a short message Internet protocol gateway (SM-IP-GW).

18. The WTRU of claim 13 , wherein the SMS data is received by the base station from the cellular core network.

19. The WTRU of claim 13 , further configured to:

decipher the ciphered SMS data; and

display the deciphered SMS data on a display screen.
